Chapter 13: Past Memories
Duska
It's been a month since Sans had his 'stress attack' and he hasn't gotten anything similar to it. We've mostly been hanging out in Snowdin as Papyrus had to recalibrate his puzzles and Sans had to 'work'. But right now the three of us are home, all eating spaghetti for dinner. By 'eating' I actually mean waiting for Paps to get distracted so that Sans can send it to... wherever it goes.
"WOWIE! ONCE AGAIN YOU TWO HAVE EATEN MY SPAGHETTI SO FAST! DO YOU WANT SECONDS DUSKA?"
"No thank you Paps, that large plate filled me."
"NYEH HEH HEH! MASTER CHEF PAPYRUS DOES IT AGAIN!"
A polite knock comes from the front door along with a giggle.
"Knock knock!"
Toriel's here. Sans jumps down from the chair and stands beside the door with a smile.
"who's there?"
"Lettuce."
"lettuce who?"
We've all heard this one before but it's still funny, to everyone except Paps. I jump off the chair myself as Sans opens the door for our guest.
"Lettuce in!"
The three of us giggle as Papyrus screams how bad today has gotten in the last five minutes, along with two voices groaning behind Toriel. She walks inside and reveals Frisk, Chara and Flowey all walking in behind her, all wearing winter gear. Even Flowey has little leaf mittens that I can't help but stare at.
"What are you staring at hybrid!?!"
"Your little mittens. Are they comfy?"
"NO! They scratch my leaves and they don't bend properly!"
"You didn't say that when Frisk had gifted them to you."
Toriel's friendly interferance makes me smile as Flowey shies away from my sight. I close the door and walk over to Toriel and Frisk who is now sitting in Sans' lap.
"It is nice to see you my child."
"Nice to see you all too. Why didn't you call ahead? I could've saved you some time in the cold."
She giggles and waves the whole idea off, just like usual. I've passed her the invitation to ask for a teleport before but she always denies, why she does is still a mystery.
"We had come over to borrow some books from the Library and Frisk gave me a great idea! Would you like to stay over with us for the week Duska?"
I smile and nod, being instantly tackled into a hug by the young boy. He playfully laughs as I pick him upside down and throw him onto the couch.
"uh... you sure about that dus?"
Looking over to the short skeleton I see that he's worried about something, his gaze is on Chara and Flowey. I sigh and walk over to him, giving him a kind smile.
"I'll be fine Sans. You know me..."
I lift my arm and watch as magical flames turn it into pure bone. Sans' smile widens as soon as he notices my own.
"Nothing gets under my skin."
Sans, Toriel and I all chuckle as another muffled scream can be heard from the kitchen. I give Sans a quick pat on the shoulder before heading up the stairs.
"Do you guys wanna help me pack?"
The two children quickly follow and enter my room with me, stopping just before reaching the bed. I pull two suitcases out from beneath it and throw them on top. With my instructions the two pack the clothes that suit the Castle more than Snowdin weather while I throw in my undergarments. That word is just so weird to me, it doesn't even sound like a word. I watch the two from the corner of my eye as I also pack my pictures with the skele brothers, something to help with home sickness if I get it.
As soon as Toriel opens the door for me a small hand wraps around my own and pulls me down the hallway. I notice that the walls are a slightly duller shade of yellow than Flowey's petals but it still made the home seem warm and inviting. Frisk opens the door into a two bed bedroom, he releases my hand and throws himself onto the blue one on the right. I guess the green one belongs to Chara.
"You've got a nice bed Frisk. You wouldn't mind if I... did this!"
I run and tackle the small boy into a hug, his cheerful laughter echoes through the room. The sound of the door closing is followed by the sound of something being placed onto wood.
"Hey Duska. You're not hurting Frisk are you?"
"No, i'm just hugging."
Even though she sounded playful, Chara seemed to have a hint of worry in her voice. I flip Frisk onto the other side of the bed and sit up, smiling at the girl. Her head is down with her gaze in her lap looking lonely.
"Hey Chara."
She looks up just as I tackle her into a hug, she's surprised at first but a genuinly happy laugh is heard from her after a few seconds.
"What was that for!?!"
"You looked lonely! Frisk! Join in!"
A small weight appears on my back, giggling like crazy. Soon enough the three of us are laying on the bed laughing our heads off. A small yellow flower can be seen on a desk beside the door and I quickly recognise it to be Flowey. I make sure that he doesn't see me looking but I notice a non-demonic smile on him, the sight makes me smile wider as the two kids' laughter dies down. Frisk jumps into a sitting position before signing to me, i'm glad that I had learnt sign language from Toriel.
"Dinner. Will. Be. Ready. Any. Minute."
"Well, we had better get down there before Toriel and Asgore hide it from us!"
The three of us simultaneously jump from the bed and make a run for the door. From the corner of my eye I spot Frisk grabbing Flowey from his perch and continue to run with the flower in the boys arms.
"Dinner is ready my children!"
Toriels voice comes straight from the kitchen and I continue to run. It's still a little weird to me to be called 'my child' by Toriel but it's both a nice weird and an unusual weird. Ever since... that event happened when I was eight i've never had anyone act like a parent to me. I snap out of my thoughts as Frisk and Chara pass me while giggling, guess it's time for a shortcut. In the blink of an eye I appear in the kitchen and greeted by startled gasps from Asgore and Toriel.
"Sorry Asgore. Sorry Tori. I was racing Frisk and Chara but they had overtaken me as I daydreamed."
"Well then my dear, take a seat. Toriel has made this 'shepards pie' from her new human cookbook! Would you like some tea to go with it?"
"No thank you."
I sit between two empty chairs just as the small humans reach the dining room. Flowey groans in annoyance once he spots me in the chair.
"You cheated! You can't use that trashba-"
He stops as Toriel silently gives him a menacing glare, one that only a mother could give.
"...uh, Sans' shortcuts. It's not fair!"
"I was just reclaiming my place in the race. I was... distracted."
I notice the five of them giving me questioning looks but I ignore them, i'm still not ready to talk about it. Tori gives us all a plate with corn mixed in meat and mashed potatos with grated cheese covering on top, it smells delicious. We eat without a word as everyone seems to be enjoying the new dish too much to strike up conversation. Frisk feeds Flowey chemicalised fertilizer between eating his own portions and I find myself staring at the adorable sight of Flowey actually liking something. Toriel is the first to finish and she politely excuses herself from the table, leaving for the hallway. I finish a few mouthfulls after Asgore, the two of us peacefully sit and wait for the younger ones to finish. Once they do they both let out small yawns, causing Asgore to chuckle.
"It is time for bed now. Toriel should be in your room."
The three of us say goodnight to the nice king while Flowey puts up with a kiss on the petals from him. I slowly follow the two sleepy heads as they drag themselves to their bedroom to be greeted by Toriel as she opens the door.
"You have finished! You all look tired, i've made a blow up mattress for you Duska. Hopefully it will be comfortable enough."
The two kids quickly jump into their respective beds as I slowly hop beneath the blankets of the bed sitting between the two of them. Toriel places Flowey who Frisk had carried here onto his perch and gave him a kiss, he blushed but quickly hid it by turning around. She then went to the two tired kids and kissed their foreheads, even though quiet breathing could be heard from both of them. Finally she leaned down to me and kissed my forehead as well, surprising me greatly.
"Goodnight Duska."
"Goodnight Mo-"
I quickly cover my mouth in embarrasment but then pull the blankets over my head, feeling tears slide down my cheeks. That was stupid of me! I just nearly called her Mom... she must be mad... The blanket slowly moves off my head and something warm begins patting my hair.
"It is alright. I know that you've never had a mother before, Sans had told everyone so that we won't offend you."
She gently lifts my head and places it on her lap. I hug her arm and bury my face into the fur on it, it's comforting. I have to remember to thank Sans once I go back home.
"But dear... what happened to your father?"
She moves her arm and I sigh loudly, if anyone I can tell Toriel. I slowly sit up and wipe away my tears with the blanket, taking in deep breaths.
"W-Well... my Dad had a lab in the basement, it was safer than making a room for it. One night I heard footsteps going up the stairs and I thought it was Dad finally going to bed after working for eight hours..."
I look over to Toriel who is looking at me attentively but also with a kind smile.
"I got up to say goodnight but once I got into the hallway I couldn't see anything. Suddenly someone grabbed me from behind and shoved a rag or something onto my face, covering both my nose and my mouth. The more I breathed the closer to unconsciousness I got but once I realised that it was already too late."
I feel tears running down my face again as the memory comes back clearer and clearer with every word. I take in another shaky breath before saying the next few sentences.
"I woke up in a cement room with a table, blanket and a large metal door. Light shined in with a small window and I looked outside, the usual snow has turned into a green forest area. I realised then what happened... I had been kidnapped."
I suddenly get tackled from the side, I look over to see Frisk tightly hugging me with tears in his eyes too. As I return the hug I wipe away his tears, no one should cry over something that they can't change.
"Oh...my child... i'm so sorry..."
She stayed there with me while I layed down with Frisk curled up in my arms. I feel his small hands wipe away any new tears but eventually he falls asleep, but Toriel continues to rub my back soothingly. Eventually the sadness is washed away by darkness as sleep finally envelops my mind.
