Chapter 4

“Hello Jules, it’s Maya. I hope I am not waking you up”

“Hello girl, how are you? Don’t worry I always sleep only for a few hours after a party. I think it has to do with the hangover I usually have afterwards. You were quiet a party girl last night, you really astounded me. You didn’t seem like you were such a party girl!”

“Ok… Look this is going to sound a little bit strange to you but I don’t remember many things from last night and I was wondering if you could be so kind as to fill in the blanks for me.”

“It doesn’t surprise me much. You had a lot to drink last night, we almost ran out of liquor because of you.”

“Oh Goddddd!”

“Relax I am joking, we had too much liquor, but you really drank a lot, girl. So what is the last thing you remember, for me to know where to begin my narration.”

“Ok. I remember I came to you place”

“Thank God”

“Ha ha it is not funny… When I came a lot of people were already there, some I knew from work, so I started mingling with them.”

“Playing it safe, I know.”

“Ya, that was probably what you thought when you came and took me by the hand, as a little girl I might add, and started introducing me to some of your friends, who coincidentally were all male.”

“Sweety! It was for your own good, you think all us girls at work have not noticed that you prefer to keep to yourself and break that rule only to have occasional lunch with us. You avoid going out with any guys, even if they are your coworkers. You have not said anything but it is obvious you are heartbroken….”

“I did not know it was that evident.”

“It is! But I think after last night, all the drama you must have had is in the past. You really hit it off with many of the guys I introduced you to. They were very impressed by you.”

“That’s nice, even if I don’t remember it. The last thing I remember is me talking to your friend Mike, we had some shots of tequila that Jane offered us and then he invited me to dance with him. That’s it. I remember dancing with him and then nothing!”

“Oh, then you missed the best part! I imagine that the last shot of tequila was too much for you and that’s why you don’t remember the rest, which is a lot.”

“How much is a lot?”

“Well for starters, you danced quite a few slow dances with Mike. Then the more fast songs came and there you went wild. You threw your shoes away and you danced like crazy with everybody. You sure got some fine moves, girlfriend. I would like you to teach them to me sometimes.”

“So, basically I made a fool of myself!”

“Not at all! Not at all! You just had fun. Many of us followed your example and we had a really good time. Even our boss was impressed by you.”

“Our boss? What do you mean by our boss? Our boss is in Europe.”

“No, he got back yesterday afternoon. When he called me to ask me something about work I invited him to come and relax a little bit from such a tiring trip. He tends to overdo it when he goes to Europe for business. The previous time he had gone we feared he would overwork himself. I had to make him promise he would come and I am glad he came because he had a lot of fun too. I think he got pretty tipsy in the end too.”

“That is just great! The first time we meet and not only I do not remember him or what I told him but he had to see me totally drunk. Oooh What must he think of me? Why does these things always happen to me? Why?”

“Don’t worry silly, I already told you he already likes you. He told me that it is quiet refreshing to have an employee that is so good and such a professional at the work environment but at the same time to be so fun to be around outside of work.”

“He really said those things? I wouldn’t like to go to work on Monday, only to be fired. I really need this job. I have worked so hard this past two months, when he was away that it would be a real shame to lose it over something like that.”

“Why would he fire you, sweety? You weren’t dancing on his work desk, only in living room table.”

“I did, what?”

“Oh ya, didn’t I mention that at some point you really liked a song and decided to dance it on my table?”

“Oh God! I am so sorry I hope I did not ruin the table and the party.”

“Don’t be absurd the table is fine; as for the party you were its soul last night, everybody adored you!!!!”

“If you say so… I still have my doubts. By the way when did I leave?”

“Oh, honey I am not really sure. It was two thirty when the slow dancing started again and to tell you the truth I was a little preoccupied dancing with Greg.”

“You and Greg? Wow!”

“Ya he has been flirting with me for a couple of months now and I didn’t want to encourage him because we work together, but last night he was soooo hot and me having some drinks didn’t help either.”

“You weren’t the only one it didn’t help. By the way could you please check if I have left my purse there?”

“It is not with you? How did you get in to your place?”

“A friend of mine lives next door and I have given her my keys, thank God for that.”

“You went straight to home with no keys? Boy! You were drunk.”

“Ya, I took a cab which my friend paid.”

“So the bag was not in the taxi?”

“No”

“Ok then it must be here, if you left here alone. You left alone right?”

“I was alone in the cab”

“Ok I get it. I’ll look for it and bring it to you tomorrow”

“Thanks a lot! I owe you!”

“Bye sweety. Get some rest, you did some heavy dancing last night.”

“Thank you!”

“Nice way of evading her when she asked if you left alone!” Christy said

“Hey I put you on speakerphone so that I would not have to repeat the whole thing since you wouldn’t leave without all the details, not for you to judge me.”

“Sorry. It has been so long since I could tease you about something, I could not resist.”

“Thanks a lot.”

“Still why didn’t you tell her the truth?”

“I didn’t want her to think I sleep around.”

“Yes, I get that but what if your purse is not in her house and the guy whom you slept with is a friend of hers and gives it to her to return it to you?”

“Well, I will keep hoping I forgot it there. You heard the things I did. I was wasted. And my boss saw it all.”

“Hey don’t beat yourself up you heard her he was tipsy too, maybe he got crazy too and you don’t have a thing to worry about. Everything will be fine”

She hoped Christy was right but something inside her kept telling her that her keys weren’t at July’s apartment and everything wasn’t going to be fine. Or maybe it was the hangover. Positive thinking she ordered herself and went to the kitchen to get another cup of coffee.
