Chapter 38


“How was work today?” she asked him.

“Yes, all went well. Except that I missed you very much. Oh and before I forget the girls are throwing you a baby shower four months from today.”

“What?” she exclaimed half horrified.

“If that is not very convenient for you, I am sure they will be able to move the date if you tell them in time.”

“Nicholas, don't play dumb on me, you know I am not talking about the date. You told everyone? I thought that we would discuss a subtle way of letting it slip on Monday. How did we go from that to me having to mark my calendar for a baby shower already?”

“I know sweety. I knew that if I did not tell everyone today you were going to stress about it all weekend long. And you know how the doc said you should not get stressed. After all the perfect opportunity presented itself and I just had to take it.” Maya looked at him sceptically not believing a word.

“A perfect opportunity? And what might that be, that could not be passed?”

“I like it when you get sassy on me.”

“You are still not answering my questions” She started tapping her foot on the ground. She hated when her mother did that to her father, and here she was now doing the exact thing. She stopped right after she realised that.

“Well Jane came to the office to ask if she should take over your 9 am meeting on Monday morning. And I told her that she should probably reschedule it for 12 so that you can attend it because your morning sickness gives you too much trouble and you might not be at work by 9.”

“Oh my god, you told the biggest gossip in the office that I have morning sickness?”

“Ya” He smirked. “She said that she was sorry and that she did not want to seem inconsiderate but she did not know that you were pregnant. I told her that you were being a little bit superstitious and did not want to tell anyone before the first trimester passed. But of course all this morning sickness finally gave you away. I added to that, that you consider everyone at the office family and you decided to share your happiness with them.”

“You did not tell her that.”

“I sure did. Naturally she asked who the father was and I admitted to being the proud father. That was when her jaw really dropped.” He chuckled at that and she glared daggers to him.

“Oh my god, now they will definitely think I am a gold digger.” She threw her head on her hands.

“Hey beautiful fairy! Stop worrying they will not ever think such a thing. Jane said she did not know we were in a relationship and I explained that I had my eyes on you the minute I came back from Europe. I managed to get in a relationship with you and because you are the perfect woman for me I sneakingly got you pregnant, to keep you permanently in my life.” Maya was the one gaping at him now.

“I really do not believe you told her that.”

“Believe it fairy. And the best part is that she smirked at me and told me that she always knew I was a sneaky bastard. Then she congratulated me on my good taste. She thinks that you are a great girl and she is sure that we will be a cute couple.” He said satisfied. “About half an hour later, about fifteen of the girls came to my office to congratulate me and to announce me their plans for your baby shower. They are going to discuss it with you of course before finalising the plans; they just wanted me to give you heads up.”

Maya had sat down on a chair. She was having a hard time taking it all in. She couldn't help staring at him. She couldn't believe that this amazing man loved her so ardently and selflessly. But she still had her doubts.

“Are you making this all up, Nicholas? Because if you are I am going to be sick right now and this little fairy is going to kick your ass when she gets out.” She had her hand on her belly and was looking at him scared. Nicholas took her in his arms, sat on her chair and placed her on his lap. She wiggled still irritated but remained there. His body heat gave her comfort and made her feel like she could take on the world.

“Fairy, I am not making any of this up. Everything went well. People at the office know about us and they are happy for us. Hey! I even got a few “you dog you” from a couple of guys in the bathroom. You don't have to worry about anything anymore. Now you can enjoy your pregnancy here and at work. No more hiding.” She was looking at him deep in his eyes.

“You really got into all this trouble for me, didn't you?”

“There is no trouble, fairy. You and this baby mean the world to me. I would do anything for the two of you. Don't you know it by now?” She kissed him again and again.

“I love you Nicholas! But don't think you are off the hook for not consulting with me first before spilling the beans at the office. You are going to pay dearly for that.” Nicolas fake pouted but Maya was not having any of it. She stood up from his embrace.

“Now wash yourself quickly. I will start serving food. You don't deserve it, but I was cooking for the past three hours and it is a shame to let it go to waste.”

Nicolas chuckled kissed her neck and ran to their bedroom bathroom to get all ready for a nice dinner with his fairy. He took the fastest shower ever and ran back in the kitchen. He did not want to make her angrier at him.

The dinner was delicious and during it he managed to mellow Maya's mood. They both knew that what he had done was the best for both of them, but at the same time they both knew that Nicholas had rushed to tell everyone before she had time to change her mind. That was not flattering for her and for the principle of the matter she grilled him through dinner.

After they ate, Nicholas gathered the dishes and washed them. She wanted to do it, but he insisted that since she was the one who cooked even though she was not feeling well, it was only fair that he was the one to do the dishes. Then they sat together on his love seat and watched the news. During that the phone rang and it was Nicolas's parents. Maya immediately changed her focus to him, hanging over his every word.

“Hello, mother” he said.

“No we are not going to make it tomorrow. Maya is not feeling well and the doctor ordered her to bed rest for a couple of days.”

“No no, there is no reason to worry. Everything is fine. Maybe we can come next weekend. I will call you in the middle of the weeks to plan it.”

“Ya, I hadn't thought of that. That would solve the problem with Maya not being able to travel.”

“Of course you are not being a bother. Call me tomorrow when you know the flight details.”

“Goodnight mother”

Since the part of the dialogue Maya was able to hear was one sided, she did not what his parents had planned.

“So what did your mother tell you?” she asked anxiously. She did not want them to think that she did not want to meet them.

“They came up with an alternate plan since we can't go there this weekend”

“Really and what is the plan?”

“They are coming here. They'll stay in the spare room.”
