Chapter 36
Maya was not looking forward to meeting Nicholas's parents but, after he had been so sweet and supportive with hers she did not have the heart to deny him.
“Of course we can go. It is only fair to them, since my parents already met you.”
“I can't wait to show them the pictures of our little fairy. They are going to be so happy.”
“Are you sure we should tell them about the baby? I would not want them to think I trapped you into marrying me or something.”
“Sweety! you don't have to worry about such a thing. They know me too well to know that I would never get caught in a situation I did not wish.”
“I got accidentally pregnant Nicholas, which could have happened with any of your previous girlfriends.”
“No, it would not. I told you what I felt for you was too special and I threw every caution to the wind. Not only, had I ever had unprotected sex before, but I usually came outside of my previous relationships, just for good measure.” Maya gaped at that.
“You are not serious?”
“Dead serious! So you don't have to be worried for my parents thinking something like that. After all they know about you and they are dying to meet you.”
“You have already told them about me?”
“Well I am not proud of it but I was not the one who first told them about you.” he said sheepishly.
“Who, then?” Maya looked at him baffled.
“Glenda called my mother as soon as we left her restaurant the first morning I took you there. Of course, she called her again when you went by to take surprise breakfast for me and the rest of the time we went there. My folks have been grilling me to take you to meet them for weeks.” He said happily.
“Aaah you are insufferable.” She said and turned her head away so that he would not see that she was smirking. He was adorable and she loved him more each day.
Their trip back home was uneventful, as was the week that proceeded. The only drawback was that her morning sickness was getting worse day by day. On Friday, they had to call her doctor because she vomited continuously for two-three hours. The doctor prescribed her some mild drugs and ordered her bed rest for a couple of days. Maya regretted not being able to go to work and to his parents' house. They were very excited when Nicolas had announced their plans to visit.
Nicholas did not want to go to work either but Maya insisted that she was fine.
“Nicholas, be reasonable please. It is bad enough I can't go to work. That means more work for you. You can't just skip work whenever I can't go. You will be broke by the time the baby is born. After all I am OK now. The drugs have worked and I am feeling much better.”
“Still I don't like the idea of you staying here alone when you are not feeling well.”
“That is something that we will have to deal with from time to time, sweetheart. Now go. I have everything I need for the next few hours, your phone number is on my speed dial and if I feel bad for whatever reason I will call you immediately. I promise”
“You better! Or else I won't bring you cake from Glenda's for dessert.” He said and kissed her on her forehead.
“You are mean to your baby fairy.” she said with a voice full of hurt.
“You are one great manipulator. You devious fairy!” he said playfully, kissed her once more and got off the bed where he was sitting next to her.
“I will be back as soon as I can. I will be working through lunch break because July rescheduled my morning appointment, so I won't be able to come home for lunch.”
“I am so sorry I got you to lose your lunch break.” Maya felt even guiltier now.
“Hey hey hey fairy! I don't mind. You are feeling sick each morning. You can't eat a thing before lunch without vomiting it and you also have to go through labour to get our little fairy in this world, me losing lunch is the least I can do.”
Maya looked at him adoringly. He really was the best guy in the entire world and she was the lucky girl who got him. It was probably god's try to reimburse her for all the crappy boyfriends she had up until now.
“I love you know that?”
“That is good because I love you too!” he gave her one last kiss and left.
She sat on the bed and opened the TV. She was glad they had slept in Nicolas's apartment the previous night because he had a TV set in his bedroom and this way she would pass the day watching TV instead of depressing over not going to work. She did not want to admit it but she felt bad that she was not with Nicolas right now. She had gotten used to being with him all day long.
A few minutes later her phone rang. She saw that it was Nicholas.
“Honey! what is wrong? Did you forget something? You want me to bring it to you downstairs?”
“Nope. Don't you dare get out of the bed for anything other than going to the bathroom or the kitchen to get your lunch.” Maya giggled at his orders.
“What happens then? Oh please, don't tell me you were in an accident or something.”
“No, sweet fairy, don't you worry your pretty head with thoughts like that. I just wanted to make sure your phone was working fine.” Maya chuckled.
“That is one lame excuse, Nicholas. The signal is fine here and you saw me use the phone before you left, when I called July to tell her to cancel my appointments for the day. Hey you actually spoke to her from the same phone.”
“Phones are known to run out of battery. I wanted to be certain all was well.”
“Mmmhhhmmm. So what is the real reason you called?”
“I already miss you fairy.” He admitted.
“I miss you too, sweety. You will get to work and you won't realise how the day past. I am the one stuck here doing nothing. So, hang up now before I start whining again.” It was Nicholas's turn to chuckle.
“OK. I will talk to you later, or whenever you want. Don't hesitate to call me.”
“I promised that already, stop worrying.”
“OK. Love you, sweet fairy”
“Love you too.”
They hung up and Nicolas mumbled to himself.
“And to think I used to make fun of the guys that acted like I do. Payback is a real bitch sometimes.”
He went to his office and when July came in with his coffee he immediately told her.
“July, if Maya calls at some point, put her through no matter the appointment I might have. And if I am on the phone interrupt me and I will hung up.”
“Hey! Is something wrong? Maya said that she had too much morning sickness.”
“She was vomiting for three hours straight this morning. Even though, the drug the doctor gave her, relaxed her stomach somewhat, I am worried about her being alone at home. I made her promise to call if she feels any kind of discomfort.” July smiled at him.
“You are one anxious daddy, aren't you? She will be fine, Nicholas. Morning sickness is common in pregnant women. Some days are worse than others but after the first three or four months things will be better. So be patient, don't stress her even more than she already is and everything will be great.”
“How come you know all these things about pregnant women? Is there a baby in your home I don't know about?”
“No, don't be silly. I am sure you would have noticed if my belly had gotten that big. My sister had a baby last year and we had to go through all this together since her husband is a pilot and he was always out of country during her pregnancy.”
“That must have sucked. It is not easy to be alone in times like this.”
“She was not alone, she had me! By the way now that I mentioned bellies that grow with babies inside, when do you intend to tell people about your relationship? I mean its not like Maya will be able to hide it for long. Especially with all her morning sickness, the girls here are already suspicious about it.”
“I am trying to convince her to tell everyone but she is still reluctant to reveal our relationship.”
“I am just saying that it would be better if they heard it from you than find out about it accidentally.”
“I am with you on that. Do you mind going to my place during lunch break. You can take lunch to Maya and talk her into telling everyone about us.”
“So you are practically dumping your duties to me?”
Nicholas looked at her sheepishly. “You are much better at this than I am. And the longer we delay it the worse it would be.”
“OK but just so you know, I am doing it for her not for you mister.” She said sternly but he knew she did not mean it.
They started working on their schedule and when lunch time came Nicholas dealt with the appointment he had missed and July left for Nicholas's apartment to deal with Maya.
