Chapter Fourteen: She's Gone

She's gone.

Seine is really gone. She left for college, and she won't be coming back. Like, four years is similar to forever. At least I think that's how it's going to be.

I'm driving back to my apartment.

A small peck on my lips from her, and I'm... I don't know what I'm feeling. Surprised? Lucky? In love all over again?

What about Mary Ann Beth? How am I going to explain it to her? Wait, I won't. I'll just say I'm glad she's gone when I'm really not.

I'm just... Really fascinated.

I pull up in the parking lot, and park in my usual place. I open my car door, and then close it. I lock it, and that's when I see Bass under one of the trees in the backyard.

I walk over to him, taking my time, my hands in my pockets. "Bass." I call out but then I see him more closely, and he's crying.

Bass's head is between his knees, and his arms around his legs. He looks up, and sniffs. "What do you want, Nick?"

"What's wrong?" I ask.

"Sharon broke up with me, man. I'm a wreck. Five months together, and she throws it all away."

I sit down next to him in the grass, and put my hand on his back, giving him comfort. "That sucks, I'm here for you though."

"I just don't get why she broke up with me."

Maybe she figured out that you flirt with other girls. Or that you like some other girl. Or maybe even because you didn't ask her to move in with you yet. "Yeah, I don't know why."

Bass stands up, while I stay sitting down. "I'm going to head inside. You coming?" He asks as he wipes his eyes with his sleeves.

"I'll be there in a little."

He nods, and heads to the apartment door. I stay on the grass, and I just think about everything that has happened since Seine came back into my life, and was staying in my apartment.

But everything that happened before she left?

"Mrs. Herondale hugs Seine once she gets down. 'You've made us so proud.' Then she hugs her again.

'Thank you, mom.' Seine says.

Mr. Herondale catches a glimpse of me, and gives a slight smile. I thought he didn't like me. 'Someone's here for you.'

Seine looks at me, and for a moment we've locked eyes. 'Can you give us a minutes?' She says.

'Sure, honey.' Her mother says, and takes her husband by the hand. And they walk out the room.

We're locking eyes again but something I've never expected happens.

Her lip quivers, and she runs towards me. The sound of her heels clicking are the only sound in the room.

Seine hugs me.

Like really hugs me.

I pick her up, and she wraps her skinny legs around my waist. I never expected this to happen. Her arms around my neck, and my arms around her waist.

'I guess this is good bye.' She whispers.

'I guess it is.' I close my eyes, and take in everything that's happening. And she does the unexpected.

She puts her hands on both my cheeks, and gives me a little peck on the lips.

It's just a little peck but I was waiting for that one kiss. Even if it was just one millisecond, it's the kiss from her I was waiting for my whole life."

The sun sets, and I smile. After everything that's happened? I know I'm going to be okay.

I know everything's going to be okay.
