Three things you love besides writing/reading?
1) Eating
2) Playing sports
3) Playing the piano :D
Three things you hate?
1) Rude little children! I get along well with little kids, but I really dislike those little bratty ones that think they know everything! (G.S. Glow Commentary: Agreed. It's not that hard to teach kids some manners! I know a one-year-old who can say please and thank you through speech and sign language. Hence - not that hard! This is a good one!)
2) Falling in love with a new pair of shoes and then getting told that they don’t have that color anymore or your shoe size. Super aggravating.
3) Being one point away from getting an A on an assignment. It makes me want to flip a table, I swear.
Why do you write?
I write because I love it! It’s my own way to express myself. You know how everyone has a talent for something. Well, because I can’t draw (A kindergartener has better art-skills than me) then I drown my sorrows-- about being a crappy artist-- in my writing. I won’t say that I’m an outstanding writer, but I also won’t say that I don’t have a knack for it.
Out of all your stories, which one is your favorite?
I only have one story posted so far-- L.A.I.R-- so I’ll have to say that that is my favorite. :P I wrote another story when I was in seventh grade, called Blue Moon. It’s in the fantasy story, so maybe when I’m finished with the current one I might go back and fix that one up… who knows. :)
How do you create your characters?
That's a tricky question. The characters just kind of come to me, you know? I’m a very visual person, so after thinking of an overarching plot, the characters that would work kind of just….appear. I then tailor them to make them appear more “human” rather than just a figment of my imagination, but in short, I just visualise them.
Out of your characters, which one are you the most like?
Gosh, I don’t know. I love all of my characters! There are like the five MAIN ones: Orion, Saffron, Zara, Aurora, and Max. Then the secondary ones: Roman and Simon. They are all unique and quirky in their own way, so it’s hard to pick only one of them. But I’d have to say, contrary to popular belief, that I like Maximilian Reiber, one of the main characters of L.A.I.R. I love how he doesn’t allow himself to get influenced by anyone, and is ruthless when he has to be. At the same time, however, he does have a heart-- even though he may initially appear like that stereotypical bad boy.
Most people would think that I would prefer Zara, (the story mostly revolves around her and her exploits) but that is not the case. She is a very complex character, and although she does hold a place in my heart, I wouldn’t say that she’s my favorite.
What do you do when you have writer’s block?
I just sit and mull around, waiting for the lightbulb to appear over my head! It’s funny, because I rarely get writer’s block. It usually happens when my life is in a bit of turmoil, so I don’t have enough time or energy to actually think about my story. But when writer’s block is gone, the ideas just roll out! I’ll write an 8-page chapter in a day and then bite my nails as I wait for Friday to come around so I can post it. :P
How do you plan out your stories?
I’m OCD when it comes to planning my story. I’ll have mind-maps, timelines, character pages, setting pages, etc. etc. I want everything to be perfect so that there aren’t any loopholes later in the story. But I start by jotting down all my ideas for a story, then the protagonists/ antagonists/ secondary characters, etc. Afterwards, I draw a mind-map for each character describing their actions and what it leads to and so on and so forth. I don’t necessary include everything I write there in the story, but it leaves a lot of space for me to play around with. After the mind-maps, come the character pages- aka an 8 page questionnaire for each character. They help me make them more realistic. Finally, I plan out my story chapter by chapter, so at least I have something to refer back to when I’m writing.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Tenses and dialogue tags. I tend to swap from past to present a lot in my writing, and I always get confused about whether you should add a capital letter after a question mark in between quotes. It’s so complicated, and I always get called out on it! :P (G.S. Glow Commentary: I have been told by a freelance editor that the 'dialogue' tag should NOT be capitalized even in cases of question marks. For example: ["Who said this?" she asked.] is the correct way. For more examples go here: http://scookiereviews.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/dialogue-marks-and-taglines.html)
What are you writing strengths?
Description! I describe everything so graphically that it’s almost impossible for the reader to not picture what I’m try to show them, be it setting or characters. I’ve gotten a lot of praise for it in the past, but at times it can also be my downfall. (Too much sugar in your tea is just as bad as not enough sugar).
What genre do you read?
Romance, Fantasy, Adventure, and Action. Why? Well, firstly, I’m a hopeless romantic- I don’t believe in love at first sight, but I do think it’s possible to find your other half! For fantasy, I just love the idea of creating your own fictional world. What really made me love the genre is The Lord of The Rings series by J. R. R. Tolkien. What can I say, trolls, elves, dwarves are super cool! For Action and Adventure, I really like fast-paced stories. If the storyline is slow, I tend to get bored after a while, so tons of action keeps me glued to the book. :)
What genre do you write?
I can write any genre, really, except historical fiction. You can’t really know what genre you’re good at until you try writing in all of them! But I usually write Romance, Fantasy, and Adventure though, because those are the genres I’ve ever actually written in.
Include a small blurb/summary of your story so people can see your work.
Title: L.A.I.R
Genre: Action/Romance
"Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none." - William Shakespeare.
After the unexplainable death of her parents, it felt like Zara's life was torn apart. Being orphaned as a child, with no living relatives, meant that she was immediately handed over to social services, where she was dragged from foster home to foster home; each one worse than the last. Every single day was lived in fear. That is, until an estranged grandfather one day appeared out of nowhere and took Zara under his wing, proving that the world wasn't as dark of a place as she thought it to be. Life seemed to pick itself up again, until the most unexpected person stumbled into her life and spiraled it yet again out of control...
Max Reiber is your stereotypical popular guy. He's rich, handsome, idolized, but most of all, heartless. There isn't a living soul in his school that doesn't recognize the name Reiber, as it belongs to his father, owner of a world-renowned pharmaceutical company. Everyone envies him for his perfect life, but is it really as perfect as he makes it seem?
