Chapter 31
My bags are packed, the house was cleaned and all seemed still and slow.
I knew I had only hours left in this place I have so fondly grown to call my home.
"hooot", Ghostly fluttered down into the countertop.
He has grown so much. When I first found him on that roadside he looked like a highly distressed cotton ball and now he was a handsome and strong barn owl.
" it's almost time you left my friend. I must thank you for sitting with me whilst I read my books and bringing me small dead animals, listen to my complaints about Percy. You are a true martyr for all that".
"whoooo"
"you silly"
I brushed his head and he playful nipped my finger. I have truly accomplished my Harry potter inspired dreams of owning an owl.
I knew it was time.
I scooped Ghostly up into my arms. He perched on my forearm. I walked out into the mid-morning breeze. I climbed over the sand dune into the dry cracklings grass that for so long has provided the percussion for many windy hours.
"It's time I let you fly away my friend".
"Hoot"
"Yeah, it's been a pleasure knowing you too my friend".
I ruffled his feathers one last time. I jerked my arm a little so he would have to spread his wings.
With the rush and brush of soft feathers against my arm, I watched him flying towards the trees.
"Hey, Annabeth!"
The soft crackling of dry grass as Percy walked across the dune to meet me.
"Oh Percy".
I turned as another sound caught my ear, the crunching of gravel as a car drove along the driveway.
"Wise girl I have some awesome news"
"Percy I need to speak first."
I looked as the metallic shine of the car roof became visible.
"I have to leave, I'm going home. This has been the best summer ever and it's all because of you. I consider you a true friend of mine and truth be told I have developed feelings for you."
I tippy-toed up and kiss Percy on the cheek. I turned and ran back to my house.
I looked for the last time over my shoulder to else's him standing still in that field of knee-high mustard coloured grass.
"GOODBYE MY SEAWEED BRAIN"
I grabbed my bags from inside and quickly ran out to the car.
My stepmother greeted me with cheer and my joyful stepbrother was delighted to have me back.
I didn't look back as we drove away, I think it would ruin all that had happened and show that it wasn't just an amazing dream.
It's was time to go home.
Percy stood still in the fried his heart racing and his hair blowing in his eyes.
"I-I wanted to tell you that I was moving to your town it wasn't goodbye."
He turned around and went back to his house to pack his things, his mother would be there soon.
