Semi asked me to not to come to his practice match.
But he seriously needed to know that I wasn't the kind of person who would miss the rare opportunities like this one where I could see him play in matches.
Shiratorizawa's volleyball team was playing a practice match against the students that had come from different schools all over Miyagi for a 5-day training camp. Hichimiya and I leant against the balcony, looking down at the court where the students were putting on their unofficial jerseys before the match begins.
"Hey look, it's that orange boy from the Finals!" Hichimiya elbows me, making me tear my gaze from where Semi and the rest of the club members were jogging around the gym. We turn to look at the small boy picking up two balls, stuffing it under his arms as he rushed to the cart. With some water bottles, he climbs upstairs to where we are standing. Before he can place them down on the floor, the bottles slip and fall onto the floor, rolling towards my feet.
The orange-head lets out a small cry and runs to get the bottle, bowing down to apologise to me at his clumsiness. I shake my head, the blow of the whistle catching both of us off-guard.
"The match started!" He says, excitement clearly visible on his face.
"Um, what are you doing here? Shouldn't you be playing?" I ask.
"It's a long story." He chuckles a little, introducing himself as Hinata Shouyou, before our focus goes back to the match. Semi is sitting on the bench as the match goes on, and Hichimiya and I notice Hinata fidgeting and moving around a lot as he watched the match intensely.
At one point, the Coach, Washijo-sensei, calls out for a member exchange. Semi steps onto the court with a ball in hand, and I find myself smiling when he takes his position behind the white line on the floor.
"Semisemi! Give us that service ace!" Tendou calls, turning back. Hichimiya begins to giggle, while Semi shoots a glare at the middle blocker in response.
"What's with the Semisemi crap, quit that!" He yells, tossing the ball upwards.
"He's the guy with the devastating serves..." I hear Hinata mumble under his breath, and I can't help laughing at the word he used to describe Semi's aggressive serves. The balls flies to the other side of the net, a clean, untouchable score earned right away.
The look of satisfaction on Semi's face makes me smile wider, and he tosses the ball back up again for another serve. I hear Hinata mumbling something under his breath, after which the game resumes again.
"Semisemi is kinda scary when he serves." Hichimiya whispers. Hinata overhears this, nodding his head up and down before his name gets called from someone downstairs.
"I'll see you around, Hichimiya-senpai, Fujiwara-senpai!"
The smile on his face was so adorable, I couldn't stop the big smile plastered on my face while I wave back to him. Hichimiya elbows my waist a little and I double over to see Semi looking up to the stands at me with a glare on his face.
"Ooo, looks like somebody's jelly!" Hichimiya coos, and I shake my head, rubbing waist which she elbowed really, really hard.
"Nah. He's mad that I came here when he asked me not to."
After a tiring match, the students wrap up, after which my blonde friend and I step downstairs to make our exit as well. Tendou is resting his arms over the scoreboard, while Semi is speaking to him in an irritated tone.
"Satori, Eita." I smile, waving at the two. Their gaze turns to the two of us, and Semi raises an eyebrow at me, his expression turning even more irritated.
"Since when did you get so buddy-buddy with Karasuno's Number 10?" Semi wants to know later, rolling his sleeves up. I shrug a little in response, while I watch the way Hichimiya tackles Tendou down to the ground.
"His excitement is contagious. You know? When you look at him, you just want to cry because he's sooooo adorable. You know?"
"No, I don't know." He responds, wiping the beads of sweat that had formed on his forehead. When I apologise for coming to the match, I see him pouting in response.
Right before the four of us reach the door to the cafeteria, Semi stops walking, facepalming a little.
"I forgot something. I'll be back." He says. He then turns around to run back, and my friends and I enter the cafeteria, taking our trays and getting our food.
I am reading a light novel on my phone when a tray slides itself next to mine. Semi sits on the bench beside mine, reaching for his pocket to take something out while I glance back at my smartphone.
"What are you reading?" He wants to know, setting a folded piece of paper on my tray.
"Want me to read a bit for you?" I ask, and he shrugs.
"Go ahead." He says, reaching for his bowl of soup. I give the screen a tap before I begin to read loud enough for my soulmate to hear me.
"Just as there is some light at night and some darkness during the day, there will always be darkness in the world... but the world will never be completely engulfed by darkness," I read, a small smile forming on my face when Semi puts his bowl down and leans closer, his attention full well on what I was reciting.
"In a mix of blurred colours, everything moves on. Our fates are determined."
"You know," Semi interrupts, snatching my phone and looking at the title of the novel. "I'm not going to argue with the fact that our fates are somewhat determined. But we can still bring little changes to it, according to what we do or say."
While I wave my hand around, stretching it to reach my smartphone in his grasp, Semi glances down at me, unfazed.
"And I think that the things we do can really bring drastic changes. Our fates can actually be changed, it's the destiny that we can't make a difference to." He states, handing me back the small device. "Now stop reading things like this and eat with me."
With a huff, I place my phone down, noticing the piece of paper he had placed on my tray right then.
"What's this?"
"Tickets for tomorrow night. We're going by train, again. Be responsible for once and take this with you tomorrow when we go, okay?"
Semi was such a mom, I couldn't help laughing.
"Wah, we still haven't bought a dress for Een yet!" Hichimiya cries out in horror, while Semi and I exchange glances. "We have to go early tomorrow morning!"
"Um, Hichi-"
"Semi should go with Een. I mean, why can't you do something cute with her like that?" Aimee's first time speaking up, was to hit another one of her verbal abuses to my soulmate. Tendou snickers at the way Semi speaks through gritted teeth.
"Fine, I'll go with her." He says, turning to face Aimee. "And the only reason why your soulmate took you to the planetarium is because he believes in the existence of extra-terrestrial creatures."
Aimee drops her spoon into her bowl of noodle soup with a splash, and I find myself giggling while he shoots me a smile in accomplishment. Aimee stands up and takes out her smartphone as she stomps out of the cafeteria, and Hichimiya and Tendou are laughing their asses off while they doubled over.
"Eita, are you sure you have correct information about that?"
"I've been playing against Oikawa for years. And Wakatoshi talks about him enough for me to know a few things about him." He responds, picking up a piece of mochi with his chopsticks.
"You forgot to take this yet again, didn't you?" He asks, placing the soft dessert on my plate.
I am too flustered to speak as I pick up the mochi with my own pair of chopsticks. Aimee returns a couple minutes later, cursing at her soulmate like a chain reaction that broke loose.
"Fate and destiny are two different things."Semi has to say later, while we walked out to the lounge. Since Shiratorizawa did not allow boys to enter the girl's dorms after dinner - and vice versa - we found ourselves here a lot, arguing about baseless things as such.
"I know they are different," I say, raising a finger. "But they're related."
"How?"
"Well for one... I could take us as an example."
"Us?" Semi wants to know, leaning his back against the soft material of the couch. There were a couple other students that sat on the beanbags and the other couches in the lounge, some of the students solely were here to get access to the WiFi.
"Yeah," I respond, showing him my wrist. Semi looks at my pattern, raising his own wrist and placing it side by side to match our patterns.
"It was our destiny that we are soulmates." I point out. His eyebrows furrow as his gaze is fixed on our patterns. "But it was fate that we fell in love with each other."
Semi retrieves his hand immediately, flinching at the word. He looks away, eyes darting to the big clock that hung on the wall.
"You aren't... wrong. I guess."
There was only one thing I could do to hide my face; which was to bury it against his arm. I can feel his head whipping as he looks down at my hair in surprise.
Silence was common between us, but it didn't really matter.
And that was proven as he wraps an arm around my shoulder, pulling me closer to him.
It was safe to say that we didn't need words, not always anyway.
If mine and Semi's story - if you could call it one - depended solely on the fact that we indeed were soulmates by fate... I doubted we would have had the content smiles on our faces as we fell asleep, leaning against the couch.
