My heart is racing uncontrollably fast when I drag my duffel bag up to Semi Eita's room.
It was my first time being in a boy's room, so I found myself paying all my attention to noticing every little detail.
The walls of his room are painted a pale chartreuse green, while ceilings with matching pale beige curtains in front of the window wave with the night wind. Semi steps inside, and closes the window, and I place my bag down on the floor and glance at him.
"I cleaned up a little. I had a feeling we'd do this." He has to say, taking the strap of my bag and pulling it to the side of the wall. Trying my best to get my head out of the gutter, I follow him as he sits down on his bed. Lifting my dress slightly to avoid creases, I sit beside him, and he sighs a little.
"That was a long day."
"It was," I respond, slightly panicking when he reaches to undo the buttons on his cuffs.
"Where did you keep your shoes?" Semi wants to know.
"Downstairs. In the shoe cabinet."
"Good. I have something I need to buy before we sleep, so I'll run to the nearest pharmacy and come back." He says, running a hand aimlessly through my hair. "Take a shower and relax, okay? I'll be back soon."
Taking off his coat, he places it on a hanger and closes the door softly behind him after stepping out.
My mind is a mess as I fumble to open my purse and pull out my phone. It was past midnight, and I had a feeling she would kill me for calling so late.
I wasn't wrong.
"You jerk! Why the hell do you call me now?" Hichimiya yells to the receiver, so loudly that I have to hold it away from my ear to stop myself from getting permanent ear damage.
"Help me."
I tell her about the events of today, and she seemed to snap out of her sleepy state when I got the part where Semi asked me to date him.
"So what's up next?" I can almost hear her suggestive smirk, and I have to facepalm. There really was no point in talking to her anymore, Hichimiya was clearly over-excited.
Sighing, I put away my phone, nervously stepping into the shower. While I am getting dressed, I hear the door opening, and I gulp, adjusting my sleeve quickly and stepping outside.
Semi places a paper bag beside his bedside table and glances at me. He motions to the bed, asking me to sit down before he walks out again. My hands are trembling until he cracks the door open and comes in with a big bucket, placing it near my feet before he looks at me.
"Um..."
"Put your feet inside." He says, reaching for the paper bag.
"Huh?"
"Feet. It's lukewarm water, don't worry." He has to say, taking a small bottle of medicine and unscrewing the cap. "I could tell that you were literally dying while wearing those shoes. You know, you look good in them, but you don't have to force yourself, you know."
I watch the way he adds two drops of the medicine into the water, using his pinky to slowly mix the medicine with the water. When I can only stare at him in utter shock, he furrows his eyebrows at me.
"Do I have to do this myself too?" He sighs, taking hold of my feet and lifting it to into the bucket. I flinch slightly at the sudden hotness of the water, but after a couple seconds, I relax, my feet slowly getting used to the soothing effects of the water.
"Mom says you need to stay for ten minutes. So stay here while I take a shower, okay?"
I am unable to respond, I can only look up at his face in pure shock, and he raises an eyebrow.
"What? What did you expect me to do?" He wants to know. A couple seconds later, his expression turns into a smirk, stepping close to me and making me move my head a little back.
"Stop being so greedy, Een." He flicks my forehead, turning around and going into the shower; while I bite my lip.
Eita, why are you like this?!

"So, your birthday is in a couple days, right?"
"Yeah, it is."
"Hmmm..." Semi has a hand placed on the pillow that separates us, and I turn my head to see what expression he was making.
Both Semi and I were very stubborn people. He asked me to sleep on his bed, saying he would be perfectly fine on the futon on the floor. When I told him how unfair it was for me to do that, the two of us keep at it for ten minutes before I suggest both of us sleeping on the futon instead.
And as the two of us lay on it with a long pillow in between us, I can feel myself getting warm just at the fact that he was lying beside me. He has a smile on his face and is looking at me, and I find myself smiling back.
"What?"
"Nothing. Is there anything you want, it particular? As a birthday present?"
"Well, I don't really want you spending so much money on me so... I don't know."
"You made me some really good cupcakes. For me." He recalls, crossing his arms over his chest as he looks at the ceiling. "I liked the frosting."
"It's wasn't much, really."
"I don't know about that." He has to say, turning around and facing me. "Anyway, I'll try to make you happier on that day."
"Happier?"
"Well. Yes." A furrow forms on his face, and I slowly put a hand on the pillow. Semi takes the hint, placing his own hand over mine before he answers.
"Well, of course, I am trying to make you happy every day. On your birthday, I'll try to make you happier."
"That is so cute." I can't help gushing, which makes the tips of his ears redden a little.
"Shut up. Anyway, I have something to ask."
"Yeah?"
Semi does not respond for a while, his fingers slowly rubbing on my palm. I loved holding hands with him, he always felt so strong, confident; it always made me feel secure. I was sure he didn't have that intention behind it, but it always felt that way.
"What are your plans for college?"
Seconds turn into minutes as we glance at each other, blinking slowly. I can feel his hold on my hand tighten, and I take in a deep inhale.
"I think I want to do something related to English or Literature," I say, and he gives me a nod.
"I figured. I'm not exactly sure what I want to study, but I'm guessing something math related. Since I'm not good at anything else." He adds, with a chuckle.
"Do you think there will be colleges where we can go together? Some place here in Tokyo that lets us both do whatever studying we want...?" I ask.
Semi blinks at me four times before he takes his hand off from mine. I move my head, startled when he takes the pillow away and tosses it back onto his bed.
"Exactly what I had in mind. Come here, Een."
And even though it still felt so embarrassing as I snuggled beside him, I simply could not get over how happy I was feeling.
"We can. We need to study had to pass the entrance exam."
"I hate study sessions." He has to say, running hand aimlessly through my hair. I could smell the faint scent from the skin of his neck, and I wasn't sure for how long we stayed that way until we fell asleep...
... And woke up late the next morning.
"I feel like all we do is get late." He has to say then, while we hurried to pack up our stuff.
We were late, we missed the train, and we had to stay at the train station for 2 hours on an empty stomach.
We were not the best couple on Earth. We were far from it, very, very far from it.
"Hey Eita? Do you know something J.S. Park said about real love?"
"Huh? What?"
"He said, 'Real love doesn't meet you at your best. It meets you in your mess.'"
And when Semi responds by looking away and going off to 'buy something to eat', I had no doubts.
Semi Eita and I were both messes. Terrible messes.
And as cheesy as it was to say so, we were each other's messes.
