"Tekka Maki?"
Semi gives me a nod, picking up a piece of sushi from his bowl. "Plain, tuna stuffed sushi."
"So they served your favourite food for dinner, today," I state, and he nods again.
"I know it's not a flashy dish but I love this." He has to say. He didn't need to tell me that; the two bowls of sushi on his tray was enough proof for me that he liked the dish a little too much.
"Don't worry, my favourite food isn't flashy either," I let him know. Beside us, Tendou was trying to catch the skittles Hichimiya was throwing at him unsuccessfully, while Aimee looked like she was ready to hurl.
"Stop playing with your food oh my lord." She hisses, making Semi and I chuckle. He then turns to me, raising an eyebrow.
"Speaking of which... What's your favourite food?"
I was fully prepared for the baffled expression on Semi's face when I raised one of the many slices of bread I had on my tray.
"Bread?!" His voice echoes. Hichimiya bursts out laughing, while the maroon-haired middle blocker pats my soulmate's back with an amused expression.
"Bread crusts, to be exact." Aimee has to point out.
"Don't be so mean, Eita-kun!" Tendou sings, making Semi shake his head.
"Ah, I'm sorry. I wasn't judging you. You're just really different from the people I've met before." He says, raising his hands in panic.
"That's because she's your soulmate, you dumbass," Aimee mumbles as she nibbles on her baby corn. Semi glances back at me before he resumes eating his food again.
After the success of getting Semi and me to sit together yesterday, Hichimiya and Tendou made another attempt to make the two of us sit alone. Fortunately, we managed to convince them to sit with us as well, when we agreed to sit together every other day.
And Aimee never missed a single opportunity to shoot back her witty responses to Semi.
"So, I was saying. Hichi-chan will be coming to cheer us on in the finals! Een-chan, I'm sure Eita-kun won't ask you to, but," Tendou elbows Semi, wiggling his eyebrows as he spoke, "Come watch us play."
"Satori-"
"Come watch Eita-kun play," Tendou corrects. I almost drop the bowl of pudding I am holding, and I can hear Aimee giggling to herself as she looked at all of us in amusement.
"Y'all soulmates make me sick."
For the first time in my life, I see Hichimiya blushing, while Tendou nervously shakes his head and turns to me after waving it off.
"You'll come, right? Right? With Hichi-chan." Tendou then turns to face Semi, who is glaring at him. "She's probably not saying yes because you look so angry."
"I'm not angry," Semi responds, shoving away Tendou's hand over his shoulder. "Een can go see the match if she wants to. I'm not going to force her."
"Just marry already. All of you." Aimee mumbles under her breath while she stands up, tray in hand. The four of us can only look at the black-haired girl in shock as she walked off like she had no care in the world.
"Een, I know what you're gonna wear on that day!" Hichimiya whispers, making me flush a pale pink. Semi groans softly before he gulps the rest of his tea in one go.
"I have to finish my English assignments. I'll see you later, Een." He mumbles, before he too, takes his tray and makes his way away form us.
"Now, about the match-"
"Satori, I think we need to give Een some time to come out of Semi-Lalaland before we say anything."
•••
I have three coins in my hand as I walk to the other wing of the building. Aimee had asked me to buy her some iced tea from the vending machine, which was run out in the vending machine in our block.
"Oof," I mumble under my breath when I almost trip over a small pot of a bonsai tree on the floor. I could almost hear Semi's voice ringing in my head, asking me why on earth I was so clumsy. Just the thought makes me want to slap my face.
With a pout on my face, I march up to the vending machine, looking at the types of tea available. I am about to press the button when I hear a familiar voice speaking nearby.
"Didn't she give you back the note?"
"But Semi-san..."
I feel myself freeze at the mention, and I rush to hide behind the vending machine, unsure of where the voice was coming from.
"I'm sorry, Mitsuki. I don't love you."
Ouch. It wasn't me getting rejected, but I could feel the pain straight through my heart.
"Why?" Her teary voice responds. I knew exactly how she felt. "Am I not good enough?"
I hadn't learnt as much as I might have wanted to, about Semi, in the past few months; but I knew enough to know that those were a wrong selection of words.
So I saw what he was going to say from a mile ahead.
"Stop. Just end this here, I don't want to deal with this." Semi's voice had gone rougher and I can hear footsteps before they pause once again.
"Why? Are you in love with your Een-senpai?"
Damn, Mitsuki clearly didn't know when to give up.
But then again, I didn't really have the right to talk, not when I still had the same feelings for Semi.
"Why are you dragging Een into this? That was really wrong of you to not consider her feelings, you know."
"I'm sorry... But, Semi-san. Answer my question. You're in love with her, right?"
There is a long pause as I gulped, waiting for his response. In my nervousness, I crouch a little, balancing myself on my feet as I leant against the wall.
But of course, I saw his next reply coming, as well.
"I'm... not."
What I didn't see, was what he added next.
"I'm not, but she's my soulmate." I can hear him say the last word in a slightly different tone. "I have this sense of protecting her, you know?"
For a minute, I forgot all about where I was, what I had in hand, and every single bit of my sanity. In fact, my feet lose balance and I fall down with a thud, bottom first.
"Owie." I yelp. I knew I was in for it when Semi's figure appears in front of me, a shocked expression plastered on his face as he looked at me.
There could not have been a worse timing, and I cover my face with a hand.
"Were you stalking me?"
"No!" I respond, forming an 'X' with my hands. "I came because we ran out of iced tea!"
It didn't look like Semi believed me, and I can't say I blamed him when he facepalms. Mitsuki seemed to have left already, because I don't see her, even after a few seconds of Semi looking down at me rubbing my ankles in pain.
When I look back up to see his face, I see that his eyebrows are knotted together while he clenched his fists, his face slightly red before he faced me again.
"If you promise to not tell Satori about what I just said, I'll buy you a packet of juice." He gruffs, holding a hand out.
"I-Is that bribery?"
"You could say that. It's too embarrassing, he wouldn't let me live down with it." Semi mumbles when I stand up and wipe my skirt. He then reaches for his pocket and inserts a coin into the machine. I watch the way he bends down and picks up a packet, handing it to me after he stands back up.
"You take this to the grave. Please."
"Nice idiom."
"I picked that up from your notebook the other day." He replies, when I accept the juice, a sheepish smile forming on my face.
"How... How do you know I like kiwi juice?" I want to know, as I held the green packet in my hands.
"You think I don't see you buy the same exact packet every single day before you go to your club?" His voice calls out, as he walks back towards his dorm, hands in his pockets. I can only watch the way he takes his steps, while I can feel a burning sensation in my heart.
And like the fool that I was, I shoot a glance at my wrist. No change, of course.
This isn't fair.
Please tell me you believe in soulmates. Please.
