• Semi x Een •

There's something 'bout love that breaks your heart but sets you free

There's something 'bout love that tears you up, you still believe.

"Get lost," I hiss, turning the radio off. One of my favourite artists was singing a beautiful song, but at that moment, it felt like poison to me.

Many of my friends and classmates, who had seen what happened between me and Semi the other day, approached me, wanting to know what exactly went wrong. Hichimiya, being the over-protective kind of person that she is, shooed them away, while I lay on my bed, rethinking all of my life decisions.

It's so unfair, that my soulmate is the person who was making me stop believing in soulmates anymore.

"Eeeeeeeeeen." Hichimiya comes up to me, comb in hand.

"Sit up. God, you're a mess." She mumbles, pulling me up and sitting behind me. She takes the wool off from my hair and begins to get rid of the knots in my shoulder-length brown hair.

"Next thing I know, you're gonna say you want to cut your hair."

"Cut my hair for me, Hichi."

"Listen up, you idiot. Semi is just being a jerk because he has nothing better to do. Well, he does, but he's just too stupid to do it." She continues to comb my hair, patting my fringe in place and wincing when I sneeze. "Are you sick, Een? We need to take you to the nurse's office."

"Please leave me alone," I mutter, right before she smacks my head.

"Shut up, oh my god. You've eaten too much sugar and gotten high if you think I'd do that."

After tying my hair in pigtails, she gets off the bed and heads to the dresser. "Go take a shower, you reek."

"Hich-"

"Go, Een. Your eyes are of a pretty brown, but they're so bloodshot right now. They're creeping me out."

Mumbling gibberish under my breath, I walk to the shower with the set of fresh clothes she had handed.

When I come out of the shower, I see that Tendou is sitting at my study desk.

"Een-chan, I brought you Pocky!" He sings, handing the box out towards me.

"Satori... Hichimiya... Are you both my parents?" I hiss. The two exchange flustered glances before looking away.

"Stop being stupid, Een!" The blonde cries while snatching the box and throwing it at my face. I manage to catch it before it hits me, and Tendou's shoulders are rising up and down from him trying to stifle his laughter.

"Anyway, I'm sorry for hitting Eita-kun. I was mad." He lets me know, standing up.

"Well, if you hadn't, I would have... In my head, at least." We hear Hichimiya say. "He was taken to the nurse's office, and he had medi-"

Her sentence is interrupted when my smartphone begins to ring. Three pairs of eyes are set on the phone on my desk, and we freeze when we see the words 'Eita-kun' on the screen.

My hands are trembling as I slide my finger across the screen and pick the call up.

"Hello."

"Een."

It was safe to say that I had to sit down because my legs lost their will to hold me up any longer. In front of me, Tendou and Hichimiya exchange another glance, worried expressions on their face when they turn to face me again.

"I'm sorry." Semi's voice says. I wasn't sure if my heart was racing because of what he said, or because it was the first time we ever talked on the phone.

"It's okay." I hear myself say. In front of me, Hichimiya is holding a fist out, while Tendou has to hold her waist to stop her from pouncing at me.

"Hichi-chan! Stop!!"

"Did I just hear Satori?" Semi wants to know.

"Um..."

"Good. I'm heading there right now."

The beeping of my phone makes my eyes wide, and I turn to face my two friends, who stared at me with baffled expressions.

"Een-chan?"

"Now what did he do?" Hichimiya murmurs, crossing her hands over her chest in disapproval.

"What did he say, Een-chan?" Tendou wants to know. A rough knock on our door makes me gulp, and Hichimiya's eyes are wide while Tendou races to the door to open it.

Standing at the door is my soulmate, dressed in a pale shirt and grey jeans, his usual scowl plastered on his face when he sees Tendou.

The first thing I noticed, when he steps in, is that there is bandage on his right cheek.

"Semi..." Hichimiya gasps, watching the way he turns to face Tendou.

"Eita-kun, I'm sorry," Tendou says in a low voice. Semi gives a nod, patting the maroon-headed boy's shoulder.

"It's fine." He responds, turning back to see me when I stand up.

"Eita-kun, why-"

"Let's go."

I didn't get the time to even put on proper shoes before he drags me outside. In my bunny slippers, I find myself walking beside Semi, through the hallways, downstairs, and out to the courtyard. When he takes a seat on one of the benches, I sit beside him, making sure that my seat is as far away from his as possible.

"You don't have to sit that far away from me, you know." He hisses, making me wince. When I turn to face him, he strokes the bandage on his face slightly.

"Um. Are you okay?"

"Just stop it, Een. Why do you keep caring about my well-being when all I'm ever good at is making you cry?"

My lips purse at the words he said, while he looked at me in confusion.

"Why do you do this, Eita-kun? This here," I say, lifting my wrist and showing him my mark, "Says one thing, but your actions say another."

There is silence as his eyes dart to his shoes,

"Satori kinda broke a bit of a tooth." Semi has to say, pointing at his bandage. "He was really mad at me. And I'm not even mad at him for that."

I wasn't sure how to react, so I could only fiddle with my fingers while he spoke.

"I'm still trying to understand an explanation."

"Why are you so angry at me, for this?"

"I'm not angry at you." He flinches, standing up and facing me. "I'm angry at myself. I guess... No, not just a guess but... I can't control how I feel and that makes me angry."

"What are you trying to say?" His last sentence makes my heart hurt like a slap in the face with a metallic object. It sounded like he didn't want to be in love with me... like it was a mistake.

As if he wanted to blame fate and get rid of it.

"I'm not ready to love you, Een." He replies.

"Do you not see? You're clumsy, you're an airhead. You hurt yourself in the most minor ways every single day, but you're always so happy with what life gave you. You inspire other people, you write poetic shit which is slowly starting to make sense to me." He reads his list off, raising a finger for each point he made.

"You get in trouble all the time because you're so foolish. You're an idiot, and can you even count how many times I've had to get you away from whatever thing you've gotten yourself trapped in?"

"You don't like me because of that?"

"This is why I'm calling you stupid, Een." He facepalms, closing his eyes before he sat down, on the soil.

"No, you idiot. I haven't done anything for you yet, but you've done so much for me in the past four months. You've motivated me to improve, you're the first person who didn't look at me with pitiful eyes... Do you know how much that means to someone like me?"

I look down at my slippers, not knowing how else to react.

"I don't want to love you when I can't do anything for you except doing that." He says, pointing to my face. I was crying again, and he shakes his head, standing up and wiping his shirt.

With a tug, he grabs my hand and pulls me towards him, my face pressing against the front of his shirt.

"You never stop crying, do you?" He says, enveloping a hand around me.

"What are you doing?" I choke, and I was sure my tears were going to make his shirt damp.

But then again, he did it for that purpose only.

"I didn't have tissues, this was the only thing I could think of."

"Eita-kun..."

"I wanted to mature on my own before I fell for you... So that I can do something for you. But I couldn't control my feelings and I'm so mad at myself."

"You don't need a reason to fall in love, you know."

"But-"

"You make fun of me every chance you get. When you found out I was your soulmate, you literally had 'I'm so disappointed' written all over your face. You aways glare at me, you barely ever smile, and most of the times, you make me scared of you. Do you think I wanted to fall in love with you, either? You're a bad choice for someone like me."

"Een-"

"Wait, let me rephrase that. You're not a bad choice. You're the worst possible choice for me. You're horrible, you're too dense to think about someone else's feelings, and you always hide how you feel. And now you're making me mad that I couldn't stop myself from falling for you, as well."

This time, Semi doesn't respond. I wanted to see what kind of an expression would be on his face at that moment, but he had slowly wrapped his other hand around me, tightening the embrace and pressing my face further into his chest.

"You... You talk too much."

"You practice too much," I mumble in response.

"You smell like shampoo."

"You're sweaty."

With that, Semi winces, a furrow on his face when he takes a step back. He then takes a glance at his shirt.

"Look what you've done."

"That is all your fault." I manage to say.

Semi lets out a sigh in response, stuffing a hand in his jeans pocket.

"I have to go practice now. I owe you something for hurting you, so can I take you out for dinner, tonight?"

"Dinner?"

"Yeah. A meal. You know?" The sarcasm in his voice makes me squint my teary eyes at him.

"That's not what I meant." I hiss, wiping my face and looking up at him.

"My treat. Anyway, I have to go now. By the way..."

Semi raises his index finger and points it at me. He speaks in a low voice, but I managed to hear what he said before he left.

"Your pigtails look pretty."
