• Semi x Een •
---
When I wake up the next morning, Semi has his arms under my head, my knees pressed against his thighs.
I don't recall much about anything since he had gotten out of the shower, and I move away, glancing at the way loose strands of his hair had fallen over his forehead. Being the light sleeper that he was, Semi opens his eyes a little, glancing at me without a word. And when I get off from the bed and head to the washroom, I can hear him sighing softly.
There's a text from Hichimiya waiting for me, asking me when I would head out. The two of us were heading to Osaka to purchase tickets for a concert we had been wanting to attend for ages, and Takeru has prepared a big breakfast since I would be out for the day.
I am taking my second bite out of my bread when Semi steps outside, wordlessly sliding onto the seat beside mine and pouring himself a glass of mango juice. Takeru, sensing the tension, hurries to give me a smile before he takes his running shoes and heads out for a jog.
"Een."
He was waiting for Takeru to leave, I could just tell.
"Een." He repeats, shifting towards me and grabbing hold of my left wrist.
"Let go." I mumble, trying to swat his hand away. I had to go to the train station in forty-five minutes, and I didn't have the time to start crying.
"You can see your wrist, there isn't anything changed, right? Your mark hasn't changed. I am not cheating on you. Why are you angry at me?"
"Because you are hiding something from me. We are soulmates, and we are dating. We are living together and we share a room and the expenses, and I expect you to not hide things from me, especially things that involve my closest friends."
There is a long pause when Semi's grip loosens, and I take another bite out of my bread, trying my best to blink away any signs of tears forming in my eyes.
"You... You read Aimee's text." He says, question turning more into a statement thanks to the tone he used, and I nod, sipping some of my kiwi juice and getting up to load the dishwasher.
"Aimee will kill me if I tell you, Een. It wasn't my secret to keep, it's hers. I'm trying to help her."
"Why does she need your help, and not mine? I'm her best friend, not you-"
"And that is the exact reason why she isn't telling you, Een. And I'm sorry for Aimee, and she's going to kill me, and this isn't the way I wanted you to find this out, but your best friend is anorexic and you never knew this."
It takes a couple moments for the weight of his words to hit me, and my plate falls into the sink with a loud clanking noise, eyes wide while I stare at my soulmate, horrified.
"And she's been going to therapy regularly, and I got a call from her therapist because I was the only one who knew."
"How... How do you know..."
"Een," Semi stands up, furrow of his eyebrow gone when he sees the tears streaming down from my face, "I have a friend who studies with her and he's going to therapy along with Aimee. I've been trying to keep an eye on her, in case she does something reckless... Because from what I know, anorexia could come along with depression, and she was missing all day yesterday... That's why I was gone, why the fuck don't you try to understand me?"
"How can I understand you when you... Poor Aimee, I have to call her-"
"No." Semi grabs hold of my hand when I start to march towards our bedroom, "Don't. She's getting better, and she is going to become really unhappy if she finds out I told you this... So instead, do something more natural, like pay her a visit next week."
My hands begin to shake because just imagining a world without Aimee, my beautiful best friend, made everything painful. Semi stands in front of me, patiently waiting while I try to collect myself.
"I'm sorry I had to tell you like this, I probably ruined your mood for today, didn't I..."
"I would probably have felt just as bad if you didn't... I don't want anyone to hide things from me, Eita, I don't like that." I say. My soulmate follows me into the room while I go to take my backpack and pick up my phone.
"Just be natural... Aimee doesn't want you to know because she likes that you and Hichimiya are happy. I guess... I guess that's where her anger for me comes from, and I really do learn a lot from her."
"Can you drop me off at the train station, then?"
"Of course."
It had been a couple days when I had last talked to Aimee, back when I asked her if she was interested in going to the concert with us. She had told me that she wasn't interested, that she was busy with college... And now, her reasoning made more sense to me, and I was glad that Semi had given me a tight hug and told me that everything would be fine.
It didn't feel like it would be so, but I didn't have much of a choice but to trust him for now.
---
Hichimiya wasn't the first person to greet me at the stop in Osaka.
It was my dad, who blinks at me in surprise, raising an eyebrow.
"Een? What are you doing here?" He asks, after he watches me get off from the train and take a seat at one of the benches. Hichimiya had texted me to let me know she would reach me in a couple minutes, and I take the time to catch up with my dad, letting him know I was doing well.
"How is Takeru doing?"
"Dad, you really should call him and see how he's doing, yourself. He's your son." I mumble, and he responds with a sigh, looking back at me when I continue to talk. "He's currently at our apartment alone, I knew it would mean a lot to him if you just go and say hello to him."
"Een, you know I won't do that."
"Why not?"
"See, Een, I'm sitting here to talk with you even though my next stop is in a while because I felt bad for not being attentive enough with you, and you start lecturing me?"
"Dad-"
"I don't care what it is that you think you're studying so well at college," Dad says, standing up and picking his briefcase, "Because it's not going to help you to get me to change my mind. I'll be leaving."
And then he turns around and leaves.
I wasn't sure if it was a good thing, or a bad thing, the fact that his words don't surprise me anymore.
