chapter seven
Monday at school Harper and I decided to drive to Chipotle instead of eating lunch at school. While we waited in line I was telling her about the excursion that I was going to be having with Jordan and Matt after school.
"So we were planning on going to Krispy kreme and trolling around. Do you want to come with?" I asked.
"I can't. I'm babysitting the twins tonight."
"Yikes." I muttered.
Harper has five year old twin brothers who were both never up to any good. They were cute and all but yikes was the only word I could use to describe them.
Me and Harper had siblings that were so much younger than us because we were both accident babies. I mean my parents had never told me that I was an accident but I mean I had to face the facts. My mom had me at 20. She was a sophomore in college and I'm 100 percent positive she didn't plan for me to show up while she was stressing over midterms.
Harper's mom had her at 17 while she was only a junior in high school. So our childhoods were a little rough but we made it work.
"Tell me about it," she said, while shoving salad leaves in her mouth angrily.
"Next time you get stuck babysitting I'll come over to help."
"Thank God. They seem to listen more when you're around."
I nodded. "They call me the kid whisperer."
"I've never heard anyone call you that. I have heard people call you stupid. That's a common one."
I flicked her off.
"They like you because you bring them candy to butter them up."
"So? It's called using your resources."
She shook her head at me and moved on. "Bro, be honest. Do you like Matt?"
I shook my head and finished chewing. "No. I swear. You know it's always been Jordan. Matt is like my brother."
"Yeah but things could change. He's hot now."
I widened my eyes in agreement. "I mean I know that but it's all just surface. Like I think he's cute but I wouldn't date him. There's no romantic attraction there. It's like looking at you. You're hot but I have no feelings for you."
"True enough."
I went back to eating.

After tennis practice Jordan picked me up and dropped me off. I made him give me time to take a shower. I was all sweaty.
I put my hair up and re-wore my school clothes before Jordan swung back around to pick me up. Matt was meeting us at the Krispy Kreme so we took off.
We arrived at the same time and excitement fluttered up my spine. I missed hanging out with these guys. We hadn't got to hang out all together in a while.
I looked from Jordan to Matt and smiled cheesily. "Isn't this great! It's the old crew hanging out again!"
They both stared at me like I was amusing them. I didn't know what was so funny but I was ignoring that.
"So many good times. Remember we would always hog the four square area at school? I was the bomb at that game."
Jordan started to laugh at the thought of something before turning to Matt. "Remember when you chipped her tooth?"
I narrowed my eyes at him.
"Oh yeah." He said with a laugh.
"That's not funny. You chucked a ball at my face."
He laughed harder. "Charlie, I swear it was an accident but seeing you missing a tooth was the funniest shit ever."
They were both wheezing with laughter at the thought of it.
I made a stank face and trudged into the store.

I bit into my donut and looked at Matt.
"So how's my boyfriend?" I asked him.
He grinned and shook his head. "That kid is something else."
"He's very strange."
Jordan furrowed his brow and looked at me. And I laughed.
"My boyfriend is Beckett." I told him.
His face grew more agitated and I just rolled my eyes and smiled.
"This proves you don't listen to me. I literally told you about him. The kid that ran me over when I ran into Matt."
He smiled at me. "Right."
I gave him a look.
"I was listening to you. I just was testing you."
I kicked him under the table.
We had a super good time laughing and reminiscing on the good old days and suddenly college felt like it was going to destroy everything I knew.
***
I was dropped off at home around 8 and got started on my homework. It was going to be a long night thanks to my escapades. It was me and a tub of ice cream working hard to finish up my school stuff so I could work on my college apps.
I had finished everything but the personal essay. I just didn't know what to talk about. I was boring. I was just kinda meh. I didn't want to tell colleges I was meh. Once I got my foot in the door they could find that out themselves.
It was 12 am and all I had on the page was two words. My first and last name. I was tired as hell and my body was shutting down on me. Yet I fought the sleep. And I was fighting hard, really hard, but I just so happened to lose.
