The final piece

“.......Sir...are you alright?” A soldier asked, concern was written on every soldier's face as they looked to their leader who had not said a word ever since they had left Yellow district.

Death walked in the middle of the group, his eyes stayed the same black empty ones they had been, yet, they looked so tired to everyone else.

As predicted, Death did not answer. The soldier soon gave up, seeing that his efforts were utterly useless no matter how many times he's tried. Geno sighed and looked around for a spot for him and Death to go to. He linked his arm around Death’s, who made no effort to move away, and looked to the Soldier.

“We'll be right back,” Geno sighed and looked to Death and the Soldier, “It won't be for long I promise.”

The soldier blinked and nodded, he walked up to the front of the group, leading the rest away from them so they can have a chance to talk in private. Geno slightly dragged Death a good distance away from the group, bringing Death under a tree. He sat down and brought Death next to him.

Death stayed quiet and looked to the small puddle in front of him. Geno sighed and rubbed the back of his head. Neither of them said a word for almost an hour, just watching the puddle in front of them slowly sink away, “De-"

“Do you think I'm a bad Leader, Geno?” Death asked, breaking from his long silence. Geno blinked and turned to him, shaking his head in disagreement.

“No, why would I?” Geno asked and took Death's hand, “By all the sorts of Leaders I've seen, you're one of the best!”

Death blinked and sighed, pulling his hand away from Geno. Death tapped the ground and sighed, “I don't think I am, what she said was true, I'm being reckless.”

Death looked to Geno, “It's not that I don't trust you, hell, you're the only one I've trusted this much in a while, but letting you leave that one time….was a risk.” Death looked to his hands and took off the bandages, he set them aside and laid his head back, “If you were someone else, who knows, I could've destroyed every sacrifice everyone has made to be safe.”

Geno sighed and nodded, “I understand, but that doesn't make you a bad Leader. You were doing what you thought was right, and even so think for a second, did anything really happen to the district when I left?”

Death shook his head, “No but-"

“Don't beat yourself up about it then.” Geno smiled and lightly punched Death on the shoulder, “They're safe, and they'll be safe because they have a great Leader to guide them.”

Death blinked and looked to the ground, “How can you be so sure?” He sighed and looked over to a small leaf that fell from the tree to his knees, “The evacuation….I don't know if I can, Geno!”

Geno sighed and pulled him into a small hug, “Hey, who says you're doing it alone. I'm going to be with you.” He smiled and patted his back, Death blinked, even if they were nothing but words that came from Geno, they felt comforting. Somehow, it managed make all that weight he felt in his chest disappear, almost like magic. Slowly, Death lifted his arms around Geno, hugging back.

“So please don't worry, Death.” Geno smiled and kissed his cheek without a second thought. Death gasped and clutched his soul, feeling the bond breaking off more than before. Geno flinched and looked at Death.

“...Alright...I've been meaning to ask you this before..” Geno sighed and looked to the vampire with worry in his eyes, “I've seen you get some pains in your chest and I'm worried.”

Death took a moment to breath before letting go of his chest and sitting back against the tree. He blinked and looked to the ground, unsure at what to say, or where to begin.

Geno leaned back, resting his head on Death’s shoulder, “Is it the bond?” Geno asked quietly, taking a small risk. He expected Death to look surprised or even deny it but Death only nodded honestly. Death sat up straight, placing a hand over his soul and bringing it out. Geno felt his own soul hurt seeing one piece of green still attached to Death’s soul. Death blinked at it, almost like this was normal for him now, it didn't seem to hurt to look at it anymore now that he really thought about it.

Death took a deep breath and looked to Geno, “You know how bonds are broken, right?”

Geno nodded and looked to the palms of his hands, “Yeah, in order for one to be broken, the one with the bond sealed around their soul has to fall in love with someone else.”

Death nodded and slightly shrunk, a ball of nervousness started to form in his gut again, he realized whatever he said next could possibly end up one way or another. He gave a quick look to Geno who looked forward, seeming just as tense like Death.

“...Yeah..” Death sighed, his head turned to Geno so that he would face him, “I assume Gerson told you about this bond I have, right?”

Geno nodded and rubbed the back of his skull, “I'm sorry, if I invaded something personal to you.”

Death shook his head and smiled slightly, “No I'm glad Gerson told you about it, makes things easier for me..”

Geno blinked and looked to him, intertwining his hand with Death’s, “Do...you want to talk about what happened…?” Geno asked shyly, wanting to comfort the vampire.

Death shook his head, “Yeah, but not right now.” Geno nodded and looked away, holding Death's hand tighter. Death smiled and took a deep breath.

“The bond breaks….when you fall in love with someone.” Death said, even with every ounce of nervousness attacking him, his voice didn't falter or change, “As you can see….mine is breaking...”

“So you're trying to say…” Geno encouraged and looked to Death.

“I've fallen in love with you.”

Hearing those words leave his mouth, felt like the biggest relief to be granted to him. Almost as if a large boulder that rested on his shoulders was being lifted up from them. Yet at the same time, nervousness stabbed at his back, fearing at what the monster next to him might think, or say.

For more than a minute everything was silent, only the sounds of the wind moving through the forest filled the quiet gap between them. As each second past, Death could feel himself growing nervous, the silence was basically making him beg for Geno to speak to him.

Death was about to turn his head to Geno, about to apologize for what he said but was quickly cut off.

“Death?” Geno said quietly.

Death blinked and gulped slightly, “..Yes?”

“So….you wouldn't mind if I do this?”

“Do what?”

Death wasn't given anytime to react properly, Geno had already closed the gap in between them, pressing their lips together.

And with that, Death didn't feel any pain, just pure happiness as the last piece of the bond faded away forever, because now he felt nothing but warmth brought by someone he truly loved.

Geno.
