I was sitting on the floor, gazing into blank space. Then came a knock on the door, dragging me from my thoughts.

I stood up and opened the door to reveal a portly man. He was wearing a suit and tie, and the expression on his face was not very friendly.

"May I speak to your parents?" he asked furtively. He was reading something from a folder he held in his hand. It looked like a bill.

"It's just me. They passed away a couple of months ago."

He was taken aback, but his facial expression softened. "In that case, I am very sorry miss, but you might have to move out soon. Your rent is unpaid. Are you sure there's no one else?"

He tried to look over my shoulder into the house. I moved away to prove my point. The house was as empty as it could be, with your voice echoing against the walls. There was no furniture, the walls were white and the floor was laden with small packages of food I was able to afford.

The man, who I assumed was the landlord, stepped in. His eyes were wide, and he quickly examined the items on the floor with a glance. "Miss, you must understand that I will be at a loss if you will not be able to pay the rent for the future months. So I might have to ask you to move out."

I nodded, looking at my feet nervously. "But I do have a heart too. Judging by your situation, you will not be able to pay for last month."

I nodded. "I will not ask you to give me rent for that. Is that okay with you?"

He smiled. To say that I was shocked was an understatement. I stood, rooted to the spot, my mouth never finding the correct words to thank him properly. He stepped a few steps back and went out of sight while my brain was still processing what had just occurred.

And just like that, I was homeless.

But a person struck my mind.
