Chapter 9 {Ignatius}
He could hear voices talking quietly from the depths of sleep, but he couldn't make out the words. His mind was still too clouded with fog to process anything.
He eventually slipped back into a deep sleep.
"Hey." Someone said to him, shaking his shoulder. "Hey, wake up, Ignatius." The voice said, continuing to shake his shoulder.
His instincts immediately kicked in, thinking it was Haco or Flint. His eyes flew open as his hand latched around someone's throat.
"Ignatius...please...don't." The voice gasped for air.
He only saw Flint and his cocky smile. That made him want to choke the life out of Flint more.
Flint was clawing at his hand, trying to get Ignatius to let go, but he wasn't strong enough to. Ignatius was the stronger one for once, not that brute.
"Please..." Flint said, his eyes drifting closed.
Then Flint's face shifted and Anahita was there in his place.
Horror struck him at his core.
He let go immediately, staring in shock as Anahita's unconscious body fell to the ground.
He placed two fingers on her neck and found that she still had a pulse.
He let out a sigh of relief. He didn't kill Anahita.
"What did you do?!" A new voice exclaimed in shock.
He turned his head to see a girl with ashen blonde hair, lightning blue eyes with flecks of electrical yellow, pale skin, and delicate looking features.
He didn't know how to explain this. It didn't even seem possible to explain. How was he suppose to tell this other person that he choked her to unconsciousness?
"I—,"
"Don't say anything." She hissed, tossing some clothes at him. "You clearly have no control and we're going to fix that. Get dressed, and meet me in the circle of trees south of here." She said checking on Anahita before heading south.
He got dressed, and looked down at Anahita's unconscious form.
What was wrong with him? Why was this only happening now?
He heard Anahita's breathing start back up.
He couldn't face her now after what he did. He didn't even trust himself to be around her. He needed to learn control like this person said. Only then would he feel like he could trust himself to be around her.
He met the girl from The Impenetrable Mountains in the ring of trees.
"Took you long enough." She said, her arms crossed impatiently across her chest.
He didn't say anything.
"Are you mute or something. Come on, say something, Fire Lander."
"Who are you? And why did you help us?" He asked, narrowing his eyes at her.
"Zephyr, and I helped you because One: You both needed help away from Uppskeran, or The Reapers. Two: You would have never gotten away from them on your own. Three: You need help, and are just a liability right now until you learn to control yourself." Zephyr told him.
"I'm suppose to learn control from a ten year old?" He asked. She actually looked to be somewhere between nine and ten.
"Thirteen." She corrected him. "And ya, I've got better control than you. Who do you think brought down those bolts of lightning? I did. And I can easily do it again. So for your own safety don't underestimate me ever again if you want to keep your life."
He wasn't entirely sure what to say. How did a thirteen year old have better control that him?
"How long have you been a Draconigena."
"My whole life." She responded with a smirk on her face.
"No, I mean how long have you been able to—,"
"Transform?" She answered for him. "That's not important at the moment. What is is teaching you self control. You nearly strangled Anahita back there when she was just trying to wake you up."
"Why was she trying to wake me up?" He asked, curiously. She had never woken him up before. So why now?
"Well we can't just sit in one place and wait for Uppskeran to come capture us again. I for one do not want to take on seven magically enhanced, bloodthirsty humans again."
"Magically enhanced? I thought they were just regular humans that ran around killing magical creatures."
"Well you thought wrong." Zephyr said, a fire burning in her eyes. "Have you ever heard of the war five hundred years ago when humans attacked a settlement of Drekablóð?" She asked him, looking at him intently with her lightning blue eyes.
"You mean the one where humans fought off the magical creatures to keep their lands? I'm not sure if that is true anymore." He told her, remembering his encounter with the vengeful water nymph, Nixie.
"It was the other way. Humans started the war by slaughtering over a hundred Drekablóð that were living peaceful in their settlement. Humans saw all Drekablóð as an abomination, even the ones that hadn't even had their first transformation. In reality they feared us because of our abilities. And when humans fear something they destroy it. Wipe it out forever." Zephyr snarled. "However, some Drekablóð survived their onslaught, and sought refuge in Montes, et impenetrabilia. But their greatest offense was when they killed Tanitha, the third reincarnation of Amarantha." She finished, a roaring fire burning in her lightning blue eyes.
He remembered the stories of Amarantha, and that she basically created everything. The humans, elves, and dwarves and their original home. Elementa, all the magical creatures. Everything. They said that when she died her spirit was reincarnated into another. They also said she was evil, and that the gifts bestowed upon them by her is what destroyed their original home. But like everything else, this may also be a lie.
He voiced this question to her.
"Of course it's a lie! All humans do is kill and lie. Amarantha was benevolent and gave humans and elves the gift of magic before they used it as a weapon to fight over land. Having no other choice besides killing them, she took away their magic, except from those that used it for good. I guess it didn't work out so well. There are still humans that use their magic for evil purposes."
"What about the elves? You said they used their magic unwisely too." He asked, catching on to how she didn't talk that much about the elves and only seemed focused on ranting about how all humans were bad when some were good, like Elidi and Hakan.
"I think story time is over." She said, looking at the afternoon sky. "I want to teach you some basics on control before we move on. We can't stay in one place for too long. The Hunters are tracking us and they won't give up till they find us." She said, looking back at him.
"Where are we heading?"
"Silva umbra. Now enough talk and more action, Iggy." She said with a smirk on her face as she used the nickname he hated in the whole of Elementa.
"Don't call me that." He growled dangerously.
"Well if you don't want me to then make me."
He glared at her. She was trying to push his buttons. She was aiming for something, he just didn't know what.
"Come on, Iggy, are you really going to let me get away with calling you 'Iggy', Iggy?"
He clenched his teeth. No one called him Iggy three times in a row.
Rushing forwards, he tried to hit her. But she duck out of the way, and kicked him in the back of his knee, bringing him down on one knee.
"Hey, hot head, I'm over here." She called.
He turned around, and tried to hit her again, but it ended in the same manner as the first time. Her avoiding him while hitting him as he passed.
Now he was starting to get angry. Really, really angry.
"Here Iggy, Iggy. Come get me if you're not too afraid to do so."
That was it. He was not taking anymore from this little brat.
He turned around, and gave her a death glare.
"Ooh, so scary. A bunny rabbit is more intimidating than you."
A burning fire welled up inside him, filling his veins with its fiery heat. His anger taking control in the process. He felt more powerful, like he could make Zephyr pay for all the insulting things she said. It was what he desired most.
The heat soon became so intense inside him that he had to let it out.
Like he had been doing this a thousand times, he held his hand, palm forward, at Zephyr, and a torrent of red-orange flame erupted from his hand and soared towards her.
Zephyr countered it by swiping her hand at it, causing it to be dissipated into nothing but warm air.
He stared in shock at what she did. It seemed inconceivable that she could just swipe her hand through the air and make fire disappear.
"Is that the best you got, Iggy?" She called again, making his blood boil with rage.
Again he let another bolt of fire shoot out of his hand and towards her, which she easily got rid of just like the first one.
She kept name calling him till he couldn't take it anymore.
Suddenly all the trees that made up the ring caught on fire as if someone or something lit them.
He didn't care at the moment about them. All he cared about was wiping that smirk off Zephyr's face.
Making a circle motion with his finger, he made a ring of fire appear around her.
Zephyr actually looked concerned about herself for a moment before she leaped over the raging fire.
Feeling angry for this happening, he made one of the flame tendrils grab her ankle and yank her down to the ground.
Zephyr actually cried out in pain before she countered back by some invisible force slamming into him and knocking him into a tree. The force of the blow seemed to place him back in control of his actions for a moment before his anger seized back control.
"Ignatius! Stop this! You'll attract The Hunters!" Zephyr told him, limping towards him on her burned ankle.
His rage had consumed him too much. He didn't even know if he could stop this.
Part of him dismissed her warning. It was like this side felt like it could destroy The Hunters.
"Ignatius, control yourself!" She told him once again as he pushed himself up to his feet.
He wanted to yell back and say he wasn't in control, but he couldn't. He was just filled with rage that needed to be let out after all the years of abuse from Ignacio, Enya, Haco, Flint, and now Zephyr.
"I-I can't!" He managed to choke out past the howling rage inside him.
"If you can't do it for yourself then do it for Anahita! Would she really want to see you like this?"
The boiling rage seemed to calm down at the mention of Anahita. He kind of felt like he had gained a little control back.
Then the rage came roaring back when a flashback of painful memories resurfaced. These were memories he had shoved down so deep in his mind that he almost forgotten about them. But now they were back and hitting him full force.
More fire appeared on the trees. Flaming dead branches fell to the ground, starting small fires on anything flammable.
Zephyr had collapsed on the ground from her injured leg and all the smoke.
He wanted to help her but was rooted in the ground. His rage was too strong. It wouldn't help her nor would it allow him too.
He could only watch as the air became heavy with smoke and ash.
"Ignatius! Think of Anahita!" Zephyr said to him through the smoke, her voice sounding weaker.
A spark of joy joined the rage welling inside him. But it wasn't enough to override the rage.
Then he heard her voice.
"Ignatius! What are you doing?"
He turned his head to see her running up to him, her ocean eyes searching for Zephyr.
"Ignatius, please stop. You're scaring me." She begged him, grabbing his arm.
Then all the rage was sucked back into whatever vault it had been locked in in his mind.
Quickly regaining control of himself, he instinctively drew the fire towards him, letting it flow back into his body where it nestled in with the rage.
"Zephyr!" Anahita cried, rushing over to the coughing girl.
He joined Anahita next to Zephyr.
He felt horrible for what he did. Now he could see that he did need to learn control, and fast before something like this ever happened again.
"We got a lot to work on." Zephyr finally said after awhile once she cleared all the smoke out of her lungs.
"You don't say."
"Why were you two messing around with things you don't understand? Zephyr almost died. Don't either of you have a concern of safety for your lives?" Anahita scolded both of them.
"Things were under control. And I understand this stuff pretty well." Zephyr defended.
"You say under control, I say out of control. Ignatius, why did you agree to this?" She looked at him accusingly.
He hated the look in her eyes. It made him feel guilty and it made him hate himself even more.
"After I nearly choked you, I felt like I needed to learn to control myself before I could even begin to trust myself around you." He admitted.
Anahita didn't say anything. She seemed to be studying him with her ocean colored eyes.
"You have so much pain and hate bottled up inside you." She noted, tearing her eyes away from his. It was only then that he realized that they had been looking each other in the eyes.
He was completely freaked out that she could tell that just by looking him in the eyes.
"Help me get Zephyr back to camp where I can heal her." Anahita told him, throwing one of Zephyr's arms around her shoulders.
He did the same with the other, and they all limped back to camp together.
