Chapter 23 {Elidi}
Elidi sat in the corner of the dark, cold cell despite the heat of Et ignis in Terris.
She was getting tired of being cooped up in the dreadful cell. It was beginning to drive her mad along with the utter devastation of Hakan being killed right in front of her and the feeling of abandonment from Ignatius even though she told him to go.
She was just so lost and hopeless. She was no longer sure how long that faint burning hope could last until the cruelty of Savita snuffed it out forever.
Elidi had been so hopeful at first that someone would save her but now that hope was beginning to die. It started to die the moment she saw the light fade completely from Hakan's eyes as he was brutally murdered just because she didn't know where Ignatius was.
She felt the wet, cold tears roll down her face, running the same course of many before them.
She closed her eyes and buried her head into her knees and cried herself into a restless sleep of despondency.
Her eyes flew open as she heard the groaning of the hinges on the door into the dungeons.
Fearing that Savita sent someone to punish her, she squashed herself as far into the darkest corner of the cell as if trying to blend in with the shadows.
The sound of approaching soft footfalls only frightened her more.
The footsteps could easily belong to Savita; she knew that Savita could very well be vulnerable and innocent looking if she wanted to be. Or Phoenyx, if she was still hanging around and doing Savita's biding.
Elidi really hoped it wasn't the latter. She could handle Savita's harsh, poisonous, and manipulative words. But Phoenyx had that imposing, dangerous air to her, like a viper preparing to strike the moment it saw an opening.
She shivered at the very thought of being tortured, questioned, or whatever by the Royal Assassin, or as she was better know as et Oedipus Rex for her miraculous survival instincts. She was nearly impossible to kill, and when you thought she was dead she came back. And not just the same as before. She came back even stronger, making her a difficult opponent.
Elidi didn't even think the strongest mage could kill her.
She then froze when she saw the faint shadow of the person approaching.
Please don't stop. Please don't stop. Please oh please, dear goddess Amarantha, keep me safe from whoever this may be. I beg of thee. She begged the goddess Amarantha, hoping she was out there listening when barely a half a millennia ago she was murdered by the four Human Kingdoms in Magno Purging.
She held her breath as the shadow crept past her cell to reveal its owner.
She could barely keep herself from gasping at who it was.
It was Uri Mishal.
She didn't know the last time the new High Mage was ever down here. If he has ever been down here.
Suddenly his bright purple eyes fell on her, pinning her in place with the intensity of the look.
She had to do everything in her power to keep herself from squirming under his gaze.
Then he turned away, and continued on down the the hallway.
She let out a breath of relief.
Elidi thought he was going do something horrible to her on Savita's orders.
Walking quietly over to her cot, she laid down to hopefully get some more sleep while she could before facing whatever horrors Savita would come up with for tomorrow.
As she laid on the uncomfortable cot she kept feeling a hard thing under her.
The thing became so annoying that she looked under her cot to find something that was definitely a symbol of hope.
Elidi smiled, for the first time in being in the dungeons.
In her hands she held a reason to rekindle the dying hope inside her.
