Keep It All Inside
Brush your teeth before you cross the road
I'm sorry this is really short
The thing about being the guardian of negativity is that you're constantly bombarded by feelings of depression, anger and hopelessness. They crash down over you like vicious waves and overwhelm you with sorrow; they break you down. Nightmare hasn't slept in a while. It's been a few days since he last felt alright.
It's sad to say that days like these are common for the guardian. Sometimes all of the bad feelings dig their way into the skeleton's mind and bury themselves there, whispering small yet unbearably painful things to him.
'You're worthless.'
'Nobody really wants you here- not even Dream. You just bring everyone down.'
'No one will miss you if you suddenly disappear.'
Too loud.
Nightmare covered his non-existent ears, lilac tears dribbling down from his tired, aching eyes. The worst part about it all is that he believes all of the thoughts- he accepts them. They stick with him and always torment his mind. Even when he's with Dream and they're smiling and laughing together they're always there in the back of his mind, whispering.
Constantly whispering.
It gets harder and harder to convince himself that he's okay. He knows he's not. He so desperately wants to tell Dream about everything that's plaguing his fragile mind yet he won't let himself; he'd just be an annoyance. He doesn't want to dim the only ray of sunshine he has in his life with his melancholy thoughts.
That's why he choses to try and hide them from him. If Dream isn't aware that Nightmare is drowning in a sea of despair and self-loathing, then everything should be fine, right?
But Dream does know.
Lately he's noticed how despondent his brother seems. He has no energy and there are dark bags underneath his eye-sockets; that's not the only way he can tell that there's something bothering Nightmare, though.
It's like a feeling he can't explain- a sudden knowing when bright yellow eyes lock with dull lilac. It's almost as if his eyes speak the words he cannot. Sometimes it feels like he's staring into an abyss; other times it's like gazing into a sea of sadness.
He almost always knows when his brother is hurting- and a small part of Nightmare recognises this.
He shouldn't really have been surprised when Dream entered his room that night and enveloped him in a warm embrace. He didn't say anything- it was a silent understanding that something wasn't right. Nightmare slumped in his arms, closing his eyes tightly and releasing all of the agony in choked sobs. There were no words spoken.
He'd eventually cried himself to sleep in Dream's arms, still clinging on to him subconsciously. Dream had cried too. He wanted to help his brother so bad and put a stop to these awful emotions; he knew that was impossible. After all, Nightmare is the guardian of negative feelings- he's doomed to live on with the anguish until the day he dies.
Dream promised to himself that he'd never leave Nightmare alone. They'd remain together no matter what- and that's something he is committed to doing. Nothing will tear there bond apart and they will balance each other's emotions forever...
right?
--End--
I needed to vent somehow
