It Used to Be Different

Thank you RandomBoi03 for this awesome suggestion :) Remember to brush your teeth before you cross the road

I didn't really know how to write this but I hope it's not too bad!

ALSO incase you haven't noticed my version of Dreamtale that I write about is a lil different than the actual one since I made the village further away from the tree and NM + D have a house so the story wont be completely accurate to the original sorry ;v;

Long ago, there was a single guardian that protected the Tree of Feelings- a tree that held two types of apples: the golden ones were responsible for producing positive emotions and sent the feelings to all of the universes. The black ones were the opposite; they were responsible for the negative emotions which were also shared across worlds. The tree is highly important, if it ever ceased to exist then there would be no emotions at all. Just emptiness.

The guardian and the tree's life source was connected which meant the only way for the tree to die would be if the guardian was slaughtered. Everything seemed to be alright for a while, no one tried to get to the tree and the guardian never thought anyone would.

But sometimes, monsters and humans received more negative emotions than they were supposed to. Sometimes, the negativity became too much and clouded their vision. They would become so overwhelmed with the bad feelings that they let them control them. They assumed that if they could get their hands on at least one of the golden apples, they could obtain their power and receive enough confidence to be able to go through with any job, no matter what that may be.

Killing someone, for example.

So the monsters and humans that were flooded with negativity started to fight with the guardian and try and damage the tree in hopes of snatching a golden apple. Alas, the guardian failed and was fatally wounded by one of the bad people. She managed to kill the aggressor and collapsed onto her knees, clutching her chest where the wound cut deep. Blood seeped out of her like a waterfall and she knew she wouldn't survive. She could fuse with the tree so that it wouldn't die with her however that would mean there wouldn't be a guardian and then it would be easy for the bad ones to steal the apples.

The guardian decided her best bet was to conjure up all of the positive and negative energies she could from the tree and create two separate beings. She named the energies Dream and Nightmare.

It took some time, however she was finally able to think of a suitable form that wouldn't be torn apart by the huge energies like her previous attempt. She had searched through her mind hurriedly and found a small skeleton in the universe known as 'Underswap' and copied the form into two empty replicas. The two light energies immediately fused with the skeletons and this time the form was not destroyed thanks to the many escape routes a skeleton has- everything was under control. The guardian, now a mother to the two skeletons, then fused with the tree and saved it from dying.

Dream and Nightmare remembered being created by the guardian and they knew what their purpose was. It was lonely at first however the two soon quickly bonded and agreed that they were brothers, even if there was no real biological connection. They passed the days talking to each other and gradually became inseparable. No one tried to approach the tree and everything seemed peaceful and right- they were content.

Soon, more and more life began to fill Dreamtale. The two brothers didn't mind, they enjoyed watching things change and soon enough the construction of a village started nearby. The two guardians would occasionally leave the tree and visit the village so they could talk with the villagers. There were around twelve monsters that currently lived in Dreamtale and all of them worked hard to construct the village. Dream and Nightmare would help them by supplying them with resources and in return the villagers all decided to build the two guardians a house. Everything was great! They were happy and felt as if nothing could go wrong.

Except, something did go wrong.

"Nightmare, are you awake?" Dream called out, knocking on his brother's door. Nightmare glanced up at the door from the book he was reading and smiled softly.

"Yeah, I'm awake."

Dream pushed open the door and stepped into the room with a large smile on his face.

"Come on brother, let's go check on the village." He urged. "I heard that there are more monsters now- we have to befriend them all!"

Nightmare hummed, placing the book beside him and swinging his legs over the side of his bed. He heaved himself up and smoothed out his crinkled clothes before giving his brother a small smile.

"Okay."

Dream cheered and gently grabbed Nightmare's hand, teleporting them both instantly in the centre of the village.

"Hello everyone!" Dream exclaimed, drawing the attention of the villagers.

"Hey, it's Dream and his brother!" One of the villagers said. It was a tall, pink cat monster and they were helping carry a log with another monster- it looked like a plant! Dream giggled, waving cheerfully at the two. The cat waved back, almost dropping the log they were carrying. The two monsters laughed, continuing on their way.

"I wonder what they're working on now." Nightmare mused.

Dream simply shrugged, grabbing his brother's hand and tugging him along through the village.

"Let's go find the newcomers!"

Nightmare nodded, following his brother as they wandered towards the recently built park. They made small talk between themselves and soon enough they had arrived at their location.

"Hey look- I've never seen them before." Dream said, gesturing towards a few monsters that were playing together.

"Let's go meet them." Nightmare suggested, already stepping forwards. Dream grinned, hurrying beside his brother and approaching the newcomers.

"Hello!" Dream greeted once they were close enough.

The monster children stopped their game of catch and turned to face the guardians with curious eyes.

"I'm Dream and this is my brother, Nightmare." He explained, smiling brightly. "We're the guardians of the Tree of Feelings!"

The monsters all gasped in amazement, rushing towards the two with large smiles.

"That's awesome- you're both famous!" A blue rabbit exclaimed, staring up in awe at the two brothers.

A red rabbit hopped beside her and smiled awkwardly.

"Hi." He said nervously.

Nightmare gave the rabbit a small smile and a wave, understanding he was shy.

"Mr. Dream?" Another monster said- this time a small blue dinosaur. The child peered up at the guardian of positivity with round, curious eyes.

Dream crouched down so they were eye level and smiled cheerily at her.

"That's me!" He chuckled.

The monster smiled before asking her question.

"What is the Tree of Feelings?"

Dream grinned toothily.

"Well, there are two variations of apples on the tree. There are the golden ones that produce positive feelings and there are black ones that produce negative feelings. Me and Nightmare both guard the tree and their feelings so nobody can take the apples and cause chaos."

The dinosaur hummed thoughtfully.

"Why protect the black apples if they are the cause of negative feelings though?" She asked, tilting her head.

Nightmare frowned slightly, glancing at his brother. Dream faltered before answering.

"Well, if anyone gets a hold of one of them then that could be really bad and they'd become evil!"

The dinosaur gasped dramatically.

"Besides, we need negativity to balance the positivity." Nightmare added quietly.

Dream nodded in agreement.

"Oh, I guess that makes sense." The dinosaur mumbled, thinking about it.

Dream stood back up and turned to face his brother. He opened his mouth to say something however was cut off by another child- this time an orange fox.

"Hey, let's all play catch with Dream and Nightmare!" The monster fox suggested, wagging it's tails excitedly. The fox had multiple tails!

A series of cheers and noises of agreement resounded from the children. Dream smiled, turning to face them all.

"Great idea! Me and Nightmare would be more than happy to join you in a game of catch!" He replied.

An hour passed of them all playing catch together and befriending each other. Dream became good friends with the blue and red rabbits and learned that they both had a crush on each other- how cute! Nightmare was shy and didn't really talk to the monsters, though the orange fox seemed to like him and the two ended up teaming up when the game of catch changed to a game of tag. They continued to play for a while longer before the parents of the monsters came to collect their children. Dream and Nightmare stood together, waving goodbye to all of their new friends.

"That was fun!" Dream giggled happily. Nightmare nodded, smiling softly.

The two brothers both decided that they would return home however as they turned around and began walking, they were suddenly stopped by a tall monster they hadn't seen before. It seemed to glare at Nightmare, causing the guardian to shudder.

"You protect the negative apples, right?" It asked, baring it's teeth.

Nightmare felt an overwhelming sense of fear and took a nervous step behind Dream, nodding once. Dream frowned, standing protectively in front of his brother.

"I don't know what you're thinking but my brother is not a bad person so please don't glare at him like that."

The monster shifted it's gaze towards Dream, closing it's mouth and no longer showing it's teeth. It's eyes were still narrowed and he turned back to glance at Nightmare, it's gaze lingering there until it decided to stalk away from the pair.

"What was that about?" Dream asked, frowning as he turned to face his brother. Nightmare looked shaken up. Sighing softly, Dream grabbed his brother's hand and teleported them both home.

Nightmare remembered that day vividly.

The next few days that passed were the same as usual, the two brothers played together and were completely carefree. Though, every time they visited the village Nightmare started to notice things he didn't see before. He didn't know if it was always like that, but the eyes that stared at him seemed to see him differently. As if something had happened to change their opinion on him. Strange, he doesn't remember doing anything wrong. He tried his best to ignore it and started to avoid their gaze.

But it came to the point where he didn't need to see to feel their eyes burning into him. He couldn't understand why they'd all suddenly changed- even the children he and Dream had played with had started to avoid him. Only the red rabbit and the orange fox seemed to not hate him yet even they had wary eyes. Dream was completely oblivious to the change, the villagers still adored him and he noticed nothing different about their eyes. They loved Dream.

What did Nightmare do wrong?

He started to become distant from his brother, spending more time in his room alone or outside leaned against the Tree of Feelings with melancholy thoughts. That's when Dream realised something was wrong. He tried to ask his brother why he was acting different but he received no answer. Every time he asked him if he wanted to play, Nightmare would flick his head and tell him he'd play another time before disappearing. It was starting to worry and upset the guardian of positivity. Nightmare made excuses to not visit the village so Dream had started to go on his own. No one questioned it- in fact, the villagers seemed thrilled.

Sometimes, the orange fox would visit the two brothers and talk to Nightmare. The guardian of negativity had even started to feel a little better with each visit and had started to smile again much to Dream's relief.

Then he found out the fox had died due to a terminal illness.

Nightmare completely shut down, locking himself in his room almost every day and avoiding Dream. He drowned in his negative emotions and would often sob for hours on end. Dream would lean against his brother's bedroom door as he heard the agonising cries. There would be golden-yellow tears building up in his eye-sockets and he'd clench his trembling fists. He wanted to help his brother but how could he when Nightmare wouldn't even let him get close to him anymore.

At some point, they'd started fighting.

Life continued like this and Nightmare continued to hurt. Yet, things began to change again. Maybe it was because he stayed away from the village or maybe it was Dream's constant positive aura even when he was unhappy, but Nightmare had started to calm down. Their fighting had dulled down into bickering and were no longer serious and he didn't cry every day. Dream took this as his chance to try and reform the bond they once had. He would stay beside Nightmare and tell him how much of a cool brother he was and how much he loved him. The guardian of negativity used to laugh at his attempts to make him feel better, convincing himself Dream was just lying.

But when he stared into Dream's eyes and didn't see the same look the villagers gave him, he started to believe his words. It took some time - years, however Nightmare eventually trusted Dream again and tried his best to ignore the inner pain and loneliness that lingered.

Nightmare remembers the first time he genuinely smiled again at his brother and how Dream broke down into tears, hugging him close and repeatedly saying "I love you, brother" and "Please don't leave me" over and over again.

He'd never leave Dream.

Their bond continued to regrow and soon enough they were once again inseparable- even more than they had been before. Nightmare depended on Dream, he seemed to be able to push away the horrible feelings of loneliness and depression away simply by smiling at him. They still had to both go into the village for certain events and shopping, but Dream vowed to protect Nightmare and that's exactly what he did. The villagers still stared at him with those awful eyes, however as long as he had Dream by his side then he felt safe.

Nightmare smiled, opening his eyes and thinking about how his life was now. He's thankful for Dream never giving up on him and saving him from the pain. Plus, he'd made a new friend - a purple rabbit named Bonnie. Hell, he'd even befriended Dream's crazy friends and the destroyer of AU's!

He felt as if nothing could go wrong now. He had friends and he had Dream.

Except...

It did go wrong, didn't it?

It always does.
