Nothing's Set in Stone
Eternity, to forever
From dawn till dusk, we're together
Eternity, we are family
We stand together when the world's aglow
What was immortality? The meaning of forever? Did it even... mean anything?
Here we gather tonight
To tell tales of ago
The tales of a faraway land
Techno's mind drifted back to simpler, happier times.
Sitting around the fire in the living room with Wilbur and Tommy, laughing about the chaos they'd caused today, ignoring the open books beside them. Sometimes, they'd pick up the books, and tell the others about whatever ridiculous thing they'd found.
When the world erupts, when opposites collide
We stand strong, we stand tall against the flames
The sky is aflame and the ground, torn to pieces
We will fight, we will fight for this world
When the other armies had come, Techno would fight for them. For Wilbur, for Tommy. Out on the battlefield, his thoughts weren't focused on self-preservation. He fought so Wilbur and Tommy would be safe.
He fought so that they would not befall the fate of the young Antarctic Empire that the Book of Dreams had told them of. He fought so they would not fall.
Eternity, to forever
Controlling power will rise and fall
Eternity, we are family
When balance shifts we'll stand through it all
The empire was attacked so many times. Over time, Tommy and Wilbur would fight alongside him. First Wilbur, then Tommy.
Here we gather tonight
To tell tales being spun
The tales of a land pulled apart
They'd go around, helping to build campfires for the soldiers, then gather around their own. Laughing together, at themselves, at simpler times. Just like they would've at home. Just like they would anytime, anywhere.
As long as they were together.
As long they were together, anything was possible.
When the world erupts, when opposites collide
We will stand, we will speak out with our hearts
The sky is aflame and the ground, torn to pieces
We carve our names into stone
They wouldn't be together, though. Not... forever.
Wilbur went first.
They stood in their usual formation, a trio back to back. They drew apart, as they always did. Tommy, close by Techno's side, and Wilbur off somewhere on his own. It was dangerous, sure, but they all knew how to take care of themselves.
As usual, they won the battle.
They lost.
Among the fallen bodies was a familiar face. The same curly brown hair and cheeky smile. The deep brown eyes that held so much emotion, so much life. An arrowhead, embedded in his arm – a stray arrow, one not meant for him. A stab wound near his heart.
Wilbur was gone.
They hadn't even had time to say goodbye.
We are forever
No erasing, no stopping us
We are forever
At least he still had Tommy, however annoying he was. Techno put up with him. For Wilbur, because he knew Wilbur would've done the same.
They would be together, until the end of time, then beyond.
Right?
Keep on going, on and up
To the skies, we raise our hands
To the future and eternity
Tommy went too.
It was another battle, and Techno had finally convinced him to stay behind. "For Wilbur," he'd said to the boy. Tommy simply nodded, and turned away from the window.
This battle was not easy.
Perhaps it was because of the weight on his shoulders, the spirit of Wilbur that always seemed to perch there. Perhaps it was just his imagination.
The Blood Prince stumbled a few times, but he made up for it with determination and revenge.
For Wilbur.
As the soldiers came off the battlefield, Techno scanned the castle walls for where Tommy would be, should be, cheering and yelling at the top of his lungs.
Tommy wasn't there.
Because again, among the fallen bodies, there was, another familiar face. A golden-haired boy, with the sky still shining bright in his eyes. His torso was covered in blood, and his skull just barely, barely dented. "Tommy– Tommy, I told you–" Techno managed to stammer out.
"I told you to stay safe–"
"I-I couldn't, Tech... You kn-know I would've done... this... a-anyways..." Tommy sighed one of his last breaths. Techno placed a hand on his arm.
Tommy was dying. They couldn't save him.
"Tommy... Say hello to Wilbur for me, will you? Tell him I'm sorry I couldn't protect him." Tommy tried to nod. "I-I will. I-I'm sorry too."
And he was gone.
When the world erupts, when opposites collide
We will stand, we speak out for the truth
Bonds are broken, and lives are lost
But in the end, nothing's set in stone
Nothing was set in stone.
Not even immortality, it seemed.
