The Final Chapter
Roberto joined the other officers by the lake, "Did you see the body?"
He was staring at the man currently in charge, a Detective Tristan Beaumont. The dark-haired officer scratched the stubble on his chin, "Hell it's been a long day. Yes, I saw the body. I'm going to have forensics fish her out. One of the staff members here already identified her as a Genevive-"
"So did you find my partner?" Roberto asked. "Now his girlfriend's MIA too. Get your ass in gear and find them Beaument."
Detective Beaumont muttered something about ungrateful old men before narrowing his hazel eyes on Roberto, "Montoya, I let you in on this as a favor. Just because you're my sister's husband doesn't mean you can call the shots. If you're so worried about your partner, how about you take a look around and find him?"
"Well if you want something done right I guess you really do have to do it yourself," Montoya tried calling Dani and Jax again with no response. He looked at the ground and noticed branched had been stepped on and a few plants had broken stems. "I guess they went this way." Roberto walked through the wooded area until a man came running towards him.
"Are you the police?" the tall man asked. "I was on the phone with 911 but my phone died."
"I am. Who are you?"
"Thank God. There's two women that need help in a cabin back there. My wife and my friend Jax are with them but there's also an unstable couple. The wife threatened to kill her husband and then herself."
"Is she threatening anyone now?"
"No, she seems okay now...but still."
"You said there's two pregnant women?"
"Yes and one of them is miscarrying. She fell down some steps. The other just gave birth."
"Is it up ahead?" Roberto asked.
"Yes."
"Go back by the lake and find a Detective Beaumont. He'll direct the medics to follow you. They just arrived since this place is in the middle of nowhere."
Roberto continued towards the cabin where his partner and perhaps Dani were at.
==================
"You're lying!"
Everyone looked to their right to see Bart Silverman standing at the top of the stairs. "I never touched that woman!"
"He doesn't even care that she's hurt," Molly whispered to none in particular before glancing at her husband who was still trying to keep Meredith calm.
"You son-of-a-bitch," Jax lurched up the stairs and tackled Dr. Silverman to the ground outside of the stairwell. "Where's Dani?"
Dr. Silverman heaved himself up, "How would I know? She attacked me after I told her you could never give her a child. I'll press charges against the two of you!"
Dr. Silverman jerked backwards as Jax's fist connected with his jaw, "You're the liar! We know all about you sleeping with the women here. This whole place is a scam."
"Jax, what the Hell are you doing?" Roberto's voice interrupted his tirade.
"It's about time you got here. Where are the medics?" Jax dragged Dr. Silverman to a sitting position.
"What the Hell is going on here?" Roberto looked at the black eye that was forming on Dr. Silverman's face.
Simon and Shelly came out from the stairwell to join them.
"She's still unconscious," Shelly said about Tammy. "When are they coming for her?" She was still carrying the baby who was squirming in her arms.
"Now that she's had the baby, maybe we should move her. You have cuffs on you?" Jax asked Roberto who placed them on Dr. Silverman.
It was at that moment that the medics came with a stretcher. They were about to take Meredith away when she looked at her husband and sobbed, "It's because of you that we lost our child."
"What the Hell are you talking about?" Dr. Silverman was being held by Roberto.
"I saw you! You and that Sommerby woman. You went out to meet her but you didn't know that she called me first."
"Shut up Meredith!"
"No! She asked me for help but like an idiot I didn't want to believe her. So she asked me to meet her and when I got there...I saw you. I saw you with her. You were hurting her...hurting that baby."
Dr. Silverman tried getting loose from Roberto who shoved him against the wall.
Meredith continued crying and the medics looked at Jax who gestured for them to keep doing their job. Meredith screamed at them to stop, "I have to say this now! You dragged her in your car and I followed you. I saw everything! How you tossed her out of your car. How you drove away, leaving her to die. I saw it all, you monster!"
Dr. Silverman licked the blood at the corner of his lip and pushed his shoulders back, "A monster? If you saw it all and didn't help her, what does that make you?"
"What are you waiting for?" Jax shouted. "Get her the Hell out of here!"
No one missed Meredith's parting words, "Punished. That's why I've lost my baby too."
"Well at least we know what happened to Callie Sommerby," Roberto sneered at Bart Silverman.
"That doesn't explain what happened to Tammy," Jax watched as a second team of medics came to get Tammy.
"Where's the baby?" a female medic asked.
Jax looked at Simon and Molly who were both standing against the wall, waiting to leave with Jax and Roberto. "Where's Shelly?"
"Wasn't she with the other pregnant woman?" Simon asked.
Jax ran to the room where Tammy was being taken from and all around the small cabin.
"Did you find her?" Simon asked.
"No."
"I just checked. She's not outside," Molly said quietly before stealing another glance at her husband.
Simon looked towards the door, "She was always desperate for a baby. You don't think she-"
Before he could finish his sentence, Jax bolted out the door followed by Molly and Simon.
"I'll take him to Detective Beaumont," Roberto shouted behind them. He looked at the EMT worker and told them they'd bring the baby in once they found him.
=============
"Shelly? Where are you? That baby needs to go to the hospital!" Jax shouted.
Simon and Molly were also shouting for Shelly to release the baby.
"Stop it!" Shelly cried as they reached a clearing with her facing them. "She doesn't even want him. He's meant to be mine."
"You can't steal someone else's baby! Just adopt like other couples," Simon shouted.
"Don't you think I would if I could? Adoption isn't as easy as you think it is and I've been patient. I'm tired of waiting!" Shelly dug into her windbreaker's pocket and pulled out the gun Molly had earlier.
"Put the gun down, Shelly. We don't want anyone to get hurt. Especially not the baby," Jax said with his hands in clear view.
"No! He's mine!"
"She's as crazy as you," Simon muttered to his wife. He looked at Shelly with disdain, "Stop playing games and give us the baby. What you're doing right now is called kidnapping. He's not your baby!"
"I said shut up!" Shelly aimed the gun at Simon and fired.
"Nooo!" Molly pushed her husband out of the way, and was thrown back when the bullet hit her instead.
"You see what you made me do!" Shelly shouted, her eyes wild.
Simon leaned over his wife, "Why did you do that?"
She was losing blood fast, "Lo-love you."
"Stop it," Simon whispered, pressing his hands against her bleeding chest.
"I ne-never told Sarah. Sh-she called me. Her fr-friends saw us to-together and t-told her."
"I've always blamed you. Why didn't you say anything?" Simon felt tears welling up in his eyes.
"I j-just wanted you to lo-love me more th-than her."
"Molly, I'm so sorry."
He placed his forehead against hers and waited for her to respond. When she didn't, a wail of pain escaped him. He held the lifeless body of his wife and wept.
"Shelly, I can help you but you need to put the baby down."
"No! You'll just steal him from me. You don't understand everything I went through to get him. It was fate. Me being given this baby was fate."
"Did you take Tammy? She didn't recognize you as her abductor."
"No, I never met her until today...but I know who did," Shelly answered.
"Who was it?"
"Genevive," Shelly whispered. "She came up to me saying she had an affair with my husband. I didn't know what to do but Dani said she was a liar. That I should talk to Bo first."
"You're saying Genevive took Tammy?"
"Yes. You see I did talk to Bo but first I wanted to find the lying bitch that accused my husband of cheating on me. So I went to her cabin. She wasn't there. As I was walking to the lake, I saw her. She was with Dr. Silverman. They were kissing. Imagine my surprise. She kept telling him that she loved him and to leave Meredith but he ignored her and said he had things to do. I watched him leave her and I was going to confront her right then and there."
"Why didn't you?" Jax asked.
"Because then she started walking into the woods. I thought it was strange so again I followed her. I saw her go into the cabin and after sneaking in after her, I heard her talking to someone."
"Tammy?"
"It must've been. She said she was going to take this baby and pass it off as Dr. Silverman's. She needed the baby. When I realized what she had done, I was so angry! How dare she take someone else's child? I followed her back to the lake and that's when I said something to her."
"What did you say?"
"I asked her why she was lying about being pregnant and why she accused Bo of sleeping with her. She said she did have an affair with him but she's a liar. She said Bo promised to leave me for her if she was pregnant. Then she told me not to worry because she didn't really care for him. She loved Dr. Silverman." Shelly's arm started to shake from holding the gun at Jax. "I don't believe her though. Bo loves me. I think she was desperate for any man since Dr. Silverman was rejecting her. I told her that too."
"Did she get angry?"
"She did. We fought. One thing led to another and Genevive was gone."
"What do you mean?"
"The lake took her. It wanted me to have this baby," Shelly hushed the newborn that had begun to cry.
"You wrote that letter from Genevive saying she was leave Majestic Waters?"
"I had to. If she turned up dead. They might have closed this place down. I needed to wait for my baby to be born," Shelly said referring to the baby she held. "That's the same reason I had to knock you out."
"What?"
"I always figured something was off about Dr. Silverman. I paid made a point to find out about past couples that passed to stage two and became pregnant and you know what I realized?"
Jax took a step closer, "What?"
"That the husband was usually the one with the fertility problem and that a lot of their babies looked similar to Dr. Silverman," Shelly shook her head in disgust. "I knew if Dani slept with him and the news got out, it would be another obstacle for me. So I made sure no one would find out. I saw you spying on them."
"How did you drag me to the cabin without being noticed?" Jax asked.
"Oh that's easy. I used one of the golf carts the pregnant women use get you most of the way there. Then I had to drag you. You're pretty heavy."
"Shelly, you know you won't get away with this, right?"
"Get away with what? Picking up my baby? I've waited all my life for this moment. No one will take it away from me," Shelly warned.
==============
Dani had opted not to go into the cabin as she was sure Dr. Silverman would follow her inside. Instead she circled around the wooded area until she was sure Dr. Silverman was no longer in sight.
She saw the cabin again and waited outside to see if anyone was coming in or out. She heard a gunshot from nearby and ran inside the cabin. It looked empty.
She walked down a hallway to see some stairs, but it too was empty. It was also dark. Her signal had gone out when she left the main grounds of Majestic Waters. She blamed her cheap carrier. She used her phone to guide her way. She saw blood but walked around it until she entered a dimly lit room.
Dani gagged as the foul scent of urine hit her. She flashed the light of her phone around and saw a small pocket knife on the ground. She picked it up before walking back outside. She heard a woman screaming and prayed she could help whoever was in trouble.
Dani reached a clearing and saw Shelly, carrying a baby and a gun. Dani groaned when she saw the gun pointed at Jax. Nearby was a distressed Simon who was holding a very still Molly. Dani tightened her grip on her knife before walking in a wide circle that would take her behind Shelly.
She slowly waved her arms in the air to get Jax's attention. He gave a slight nod and kept Shelly distracted by asking her questions. He took another step forward as Dani approached Shelly from behind.
She slowly pressed the knife against Shelly's neck and whispered, "Put the gun down or I kill you."
Shelly was so startled, she dropped the gun. Jax jumped forward and tossed the gun out of reach before wrestling the newborn baby from Shelly's arm.
Shelly became like a wild animal, kicking and screaming. She demanded her baby be returned but Jax just ignored her as he asked Dani to help him hold the baby. Shelly pulled Dani's hair who screamed before trying to scramble away from Shelly without hurting the delicate child in her arms. Shelly stepped a few feet back before cursing at Jax and Dani. She demanded her baby be returned.
Jax stepped in front of Dani when he noticed Shelly looked as though she'd make a run at them.
Another gunshot filled the air and Shelly's eyes widened before she staggered back. Simon held the gun between his bloody hands.
"What did you do?" Dani whispered. "She wasn't armed you could go to jail for killing her."
Simon let the gun fall to the ground. His shirt was stained with his wife's blood and he shrugged, "I deserve to go to jail."
"Simon," Jax took a step towards the broken man who walked over to his dead wife. He picked her up. "She was always there for me. Even when my first wife was sick. I was guilty so I blamed her. I'm such an idiot. Did you know she used to be such a happy woman until we got married? With all my anger and hatred, I killed that part of her. I'm a murderer."
Before Dani or Jax could stop him, he walked away carrying his wife with him.
Dani held the small baby and murmured sweet words to quiet him, "Now what's going to happen?"
Jax put an arm around her, and kissed her temple, "Thank God you're okay. Do you know how worried I was?"
"Jax, answer my question. What happens next?"
They could hear a group of people coming towards them, flashlights shining in the dark. Jax took a deep breath and slowly exhaled, "The bad guys will go to jail. This place will be shut down. This baby will be returned to his mother...and life...will go on."
"Is that it?" Dani asked softly.
"No, but for today it's enough."
Dani followed him towards the crowd and it wasn't until she was safely in a police car headed to her home that she realized that after being reunited with him, Jax had never left her side that night. She looked over at Jax who was staring out the window. He felt her moving and pulled her close. Dani shut her eyes and fell asleep. She wasn't worried about another nightmare because she knew, that even if it was just for that moment, she was safe in his arms.
