Chapter 9
Dani had never seen so many pregnant women in one room in all her life. True, three was the most she had ever seen together but still...she counted at least seven pregnant ladies since entering Majestic Waters. She looked over at Jax who was filling out the paperwork for them to stay in one of Majestic Waters' cabins for the next week. Oliver had been more than happy to give Dani the time off and Jax said he was taking leave. Even the receptionist that was checking them in was pregnant. Dani read her name tag.
Genevive.
"Our friends Ryan and Callie Sommerby recommended this place to us. They knew we've been trying to get pregnant and it worked for them so why not us, right?" Jax said.
"Sommerby? Callie Sommbery?" Genevive scoffed, "I find that hard to believe."
"Why is that?" Jax asked nonchalantly.
Genevive looked around before whispering, "Well you didn't hear this from me, but she came in about two weeks ago really upset. She was yelling at Dr. Silverman. He had security drag her away. No one knew what she was upset about but Dr. Silverman later explained that she was trying to get a refund after she had become pregnant."
"Really? Callie never seemed like the type to cause a scene," Jax mumbled, remembering her husband describe her as a calm person before she became pregnant.
"Pregnancy does that to some people. Causes them to get all hormonal and crazy," Genevive muttered.
"Did you also use Majestic Waters' services to get pregnant?" Dani asked.
Genevive hiked up her purple glasses and pushed back her honey-colored hair, "No. I'm not married."
"Neither am I," Dani shared.
"Not yet," Jax corrected her. "We will be soon though, Dani."
Genevive frowned, "Well, I don't have a groom-to-be either. It's just me and the baby."
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to-" Dani was at a loss for what to say. Genevive didn't sound happy about being a single mother so her instincts told her to sympathize with the angry receptionist.
"Don't worry about it. I'm fine," Genevive took the clipboard of paperwork from Jax and handed them the key to their cabin. "You two will be in cabin thirteen."
"Lucky thirteen," Dani said jokingly.
Genevive didn't smile. She passed them some more paperwork, "Here are some maps of the grounds and your itinerary. Make sure not to get lost. Orientations for the men and women are held in different lodges. Both start at nine. Don't be late."
"Got it. Thank you Genevive," Jax wrapped an arm around Dani and led her away from the receptionist.
"She was friendly," Dani said sarcastically.
"Right. As friendly as a rattlesnake. Listen, orientation starts in an hour. Let's put our bags down and then we'll explore. Is that okay?"
Dani followed Jax into their cabin and gaped at the lush interior, "Whoa...how much did you pay for this cabin? A kidney?"
"Not quite that much," Jax laughed.
Dani couldn't help but run into the bedroom and plop herself onto the soft mattress, "Is this Heaven? I knew I was always a good girl for a reason."
"Dani," Jax rolled their luggage into the main bedroom. "I hope you realize that after we leave this cabin we're going to be a couple. At least...people are going to see us as a couple."
"I know," Dani said, her eyes closed as she enjoyed the bed.
"Well I just want you to be prepared...you know. Just in case," Jax was being evasive and Dani opened one of her eyes.
"Just in case what, Jax?"
"Well...you know like how it always happens in the movies? There's a fake couple and for some weird reason they're forced to...to kiss. Like they get caught under mistletoe or a group of people will shout 'kiss kiss kiss' that kind of thing."
"You think the other couples are going to demand we kiss in front of them?" Dani laughed. "This isn't a movie Jax. It's real life. Crap like that doesn't happen."
"Well I just don't want us to be one of those couples that looks like they've never held hands or something."
"We've held hands," Dani reminded him.
"You know what I mean."
"No, I don't know what you mean."
"I don't want us to look like deer in the headlights, dammit."
Dani lifted her torso off the bed and was leaning on her elbows, "Jax, we're just here to help you with your case and possibly find out about Tammy Owens." She had shared her worries about Tammy with Jax before they left her apartment that morning. He had called an officer from the missing person's division to check with Tammy's family and possibly trace Tammy's phone. They were still waiting to hear back from him.
"I know that but still...we have to be convincing."
Dani sighed, "Okay, what do you propose we do?"
"Well...I think," Jax crawled on the bed next to Dani whose eyes widened. She tried to crawl away but he loomed over her, holding her in place by sitting on top of her legs.
"Jax, get off me. You're heavy," Dani tried pushing him off.
"Dani, this is exactly what I'm talking about," Jax eased some of his weight off of her. "You're too uncomfortable with me."
"Of course I am. It's not like I normally let you get on top of me like this."
"But I'm you're groom-to-be. This should be normal."
"Maybe I'm old-fashioned. No sex before marriage," Dani countered.
"Not if I'm your fiancé. Besides, we're supposed to be here because you can't have our lovechild, remember?"
"You're a pervert."
"Probably," Jax smiled. "C'mon Dani. Don't you want our first kiss to be between the two of us and private? Not in front of a bunch of strangers?"
Dani looked away, embarrassed, "Why do you keep acting like we're going to be forced to kiss like we're in some weird romantic comedy?"
"Dani," Jax whispered in her ear. She wasn't fighting him anymore as he lowered her head to the pillow slowly rubbed his nose down her cheek.
"Jax, this is weird."
"What's weird about it?" she could feel the soft tickle of his breath on her cheek. She could smell peppermint which made Dani wonder if he had planned his kissing seduction before they even arrived.
"We're friends. Friends don't kiss," Dani reminded him, her voice weak.
"Says who?"
Before Dani could respond, she felt his lips settle possessively on hers and without warning, a volcano of heat erupted within her. Without her permission, her hands were pulling on his hair, trying to pull him closer. She felt his hands, moving south and that's when she remembered who they were and what they were doing. She shoved at him and took a deep breath.
Jax was slightly panting, a smirk on his face, "I think we just proved friends can kiss, Dani."
Dani wiped at her mouth, wanting to wipe the self-satisfied look on Jax's face off. She opted for the next best thing and hit him with a pillow, "Stop treating me like I'm some kind of joke."
Jax wrestled the pillow away, "What are you talking about? A joke? Dani I would nev-"
"Yes. Yes, you are. I'm not Vivian. I'm nothing like her. I'm not even like those trampy women Roberto says you normally date. I'm just me. Just Dani."
Jax laughed.
"What's so funny?" Dani demanded to know.
"Nothing. It's just that when you said that. Just Dani. It reminded me of Harry Potter. You know? Just Harry. When Daniel Radcliffe says-" Another pillow hit Jax's face. "I'm sorry. I'll be serious."
"You're impossible. I'm telling you how I feel and you're thinking of Harry Potter!"
"C'mon Dani. I'm just trying to lighten the mood." Jax sat next to Dani, "I know you're not Vivian but I thought I already told you that's okay with me. As for those other women that Roberto mentioned...you're right. You're definitely not like them. Why should they make you feel any less about yourself? When are you going to understand that you're important to me?"
"You hardly know me," Dani mumbled. "How could I be important to you?"
"Are you kidding me right now?" Jax stood up, angry. "We know each other's deepest darkest secrets. Do you know what that means? It means you trust me and in case you still haven't figured it out...I trust you. That's a Hell of a lot more important than knowing someone's favorite color or food. But if it's a big deal to you...your favorite color is blue and you love eating Doritos."
"How did you know that?" Dani asked, surprised.
"Dani, you're always sketching and you always use different shades of blue as the dominant color in your work. Also, the last time I went to your apartment...you had a bunch of bags of Doritos in your cupboards. Those things aren't good for you by the way. No, we haven't known each other very long...but I know you Dani."
"You have to admit though...we haven't known one another very long."
"Wasn't it you who told me it was quality not quantity that mattered in friendships?" Jax reminded her. "Aren't I important to you?" He waited for her to answer. When she didn't, he said, "I'll take your silence as a yes."
"I'm sorry Jax," Dani whispered.
Jax sat next to Dani again, "Hey, don't be sorry. I know this is hard for you. I'm not just talking about pretending to be my fiancee. I know letting me touch you. Being close to someone like this. It's all new for you. Not to mention kissing me. It's probably like nothing you've ever experienced before. My kisses are known to be addictive. If you're nice, I might let you kiss me again."
Dani punched his arm, "Stop being conceited."
Jax pretended to rub his arm in pain, "So violent my Panda Eyes is."
Dani covered her face with her hands, "Jax...we kissed."
"That's a fact and we probably will again."
"How can you say that? Aren't you the least bit embarrassed?"
"No. Why should I be?"
"Because-"
Before Dani could finish her sentence, Jax leaned in and quickly kissed her lips. Dani's eyes widened, causing Jax to laugh. He quickly torpedo-kissed her cheeks, forehead, nose, chin, and lips again, "There. The more I kiss you the more comfortable it'll be for you. Are you still embarrassed? No? More like shocked is what it looks like. Should I continue?"
Dani stood up, "No, you got your point across."
"Let me say this now so there's no confusion. I like you Dani Deleon. Today we're friends but I'm hoping...no I'm praying that someday we'll be more. I'm not going to push you though. I'll go in pace with you. Do you understand what I'm saying, Dani? You're not responding so maybe if you nod your head, I'll know you're listening."
Dani gave a quick nod.
"I'd kiss you again, but again, I'm afraid you'll punch me or worse kick me in my ba-"
"Jax!"
Jax raised his hands in surrender, "Alright. I'll be leaving now. We both have to get to orientation. I want to explore the camp a bit before the men's group starts. Will you be okay on your own?"
Dani nodded and after Jax left their cabin, Dani looked in the mirror, her fingers lightly touching her lips. Jax Michaels had just confessed his feelings to her. Was this a dream?
She picked up her map of Majestic Waters. It was getting dark out and she too wanted to explore before the women's orientation began. The campsite itself was beautiful and surrounded by a forest. Dani wanted to see the lake that supposedly helped women become fertile. She tried following the map but ended up lost. She was late for orientation and Jax wouldn't even be looking for her since the men's orientation was in a different building. She wasn't getting any service on her phone. She walked straight for another ten minutes and saw a light ahead.
"Is that another cabin?" Dani asked as she moved forward. "Maybe they can help me get back."
What she found was a small house made of large boulders and cement. The windows were lit from inside. Dani knocked on the door but no one answered.
"Hello! Is anyone home? I'm lost and need some help! Hello?"
Dani was standing in front of the door, pounding as hard as she could when she felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned in surprise but quickly felt something sting her eyes.
She screamed out in pain and felt something hard hit her on the side of the head, knocking her to the ground unconscious.
