Chapter 4

"Donovan...I know you have Tammy's number. You two went through orientation together. Now cough it up," Dani waved her phone in the air as Donovan flipped a burger.

"Orientation? Are you talking about when Dolores slapped my ass and said 'this is the kitchen, handsome?' That orientation?" Donovan laughed, his dimples on full display.

"Do you need a refresher training?" Dolores asked, patting her gray hair. She was standing next to Dani in the cramped kitchen, the smell of sizzling bacon dancing around them.

"As much as I love having you two beautiful ladies next to me...I have orders to cook. Why don't you ask Oliver?" Donovan asked.

"Because he's not here today," Dani sighed. "I can't believe neither of us have Tammy's number." She was talking to Dolores who shrugged.

"I know. Tammy's sweet but she liked to keep to herself," Dolores offered. "For all we know this is her way of quitting."

"Maybe, but I'm pretty sure she needs this job right now. C'mon Donovan. Give us her number," Dani asked again.

"I'll tell you what. I'll give you  her number if you give me yours."

Dolores giggled, "You better be careful Dani. Your boyfriend doesn't seem like the type who likes to share."

"Boyfriend?" Donovan asked, a disappointed tone in his voice.

"He's not my boyfriend," Dani blushed.

"Who's your boyfriend?" Donovan asked. "Does he eat here?"

"Why should I tell you? So you can poison his food?"

"So he is your boyfriend," Donovan said softly.

Dani opened her mouth to protest, but realized what he had asked earlier. She grimaced and held a finger up, "One. He's not my boyfriend. He's just a detective I met when a friend went missing. Two. My personal life is just that...personal. I don't need to explain my relationships to anyone in this restaurant." She gave a hard look to Dolores who shrugged.

"Don't be too aggressive Dani or you'll scare him away," Dolores said. "We still need to find out about Tammy. She's pregnant and on her own."

"Enough you two. I'm sure she's fine. Did you forget you have customers out there?" Donovan reminded them. "Slow food means slow tips or low tips or something like that."

"I always liked stubborn men," Dolores winked at Donovan before taking a plate of food and heading out of the kitchen.

"So you're really not going to give me her phone number?" Dani asked.

"I won't. Mainly because I don't have it."

"Why didn't you say so?"

"And disappoint Dolores? She thinks I'm some kind of ladies man. I will give you her address. I gave her a ride home once. Maybe you can stop by and check on her," Donovan offered.

"Thank you Donovan!"

Dolores popped her head back into the kitchen to whisper, "Dani! Your boyfriend Detective Jax Michaels is here."

"Jax Michaels?" Donovan asked. "Isn't he the one from the news?"

Dani smiled, "He and his partner caught The Maestro."

"So he's like a super cop. I guess that means I have no chance then huh?" Donovan turned back to the chicken strip platter he was working on .

Dani frowned. Was he joking with her? She took a step closer to Donovan, "Jax really is just a friend but I should warn you that I don't date."

"At all?"

Dani realized what she said and how much of a loser it made her sound so she quickly added, "Co-workers. I don't date co-workers."

"Well I won't always be working here."

Dani grinned. He was back to his playful self, "Well if that day ever comes and I'm still single, you can ask me out."

"Will you still say no?"

Dani picked up the chicken strip platter and smiled, "Probably."

As she walked out of the diner she delivered the order and walked up to the two detectives, "You two are starting to come here everyday. Detective Montoya does your wife know you're here?"

"Dani, I told you before, call me Roberto. Besides, you make it sound like this is a strip joint. My Gladys hates cooking."

"What will you two be having today?" Dani asked.

"I'll have a bowl of chili," Roberto answered.

"Chili? You better not be passing gas in the car," Jax warned his partner. "My Escalade doesn't deserve the abuse."

"Rich boys," Roberto muttered.

"And you Jax?"

"I'll have  a club."

Dani started to walk away but turned around quickly, "Hey Jax...if you're not too busy, can you pick me up tonight after my shift is over?"

Both men looked up at Dani in surprise.

"If you can't...it's okay," Dani said softly.

"No!" Both men raised their hands in protest.

Jax glared at Roberto who shrugged, "Of course I can Dani. I'd love to. What time do you get off of work?"

====
A few hours later, Dani was getting with Jax's Escalade. He glanced at Dani as she buckled her seat belt.

"So...did you want to go somewhere in particular? I was thinking maybe we could catch a movie or-"

"I'm sorry Jax. I can't tonight."

"Oh...well that's okay. I'll just take you home then."

Dani smiled when she caught the look of disappointment on his face, "I was hoping you'd take me somewhere. Not my apartment I mean."

"Of course I can," he said with a little too much excitement. He cleared his throat and repeated in a calmer voice, "Of course I can. Where did you want to go?"

Dani gave him Tammy's address, "I had a dream last night about this waitress. She was trapped and someone was trying to steal her baby. At first I thought it was probably just her having a bad dream after watching one of those creepy shows on Lifetime about people stealing babies but then Dolores texted me. This waitress I had a dream about didn't come to work."

"Did you touch her recently?" Jax asked. He was the only person Dani had ever told about her ability to see people's nightmares after touching them. It wasn't the greatest gift as she had no control over knowing whose dreams she was seeing but after her friend Billy had been abducted and killed, she was hopeful that she'd eventually be able to master her gift...or curse as she sometimes called it.

"Yes. She grabbed my hands yesterday. I just want to make sure she's alive and okay."

"No problem. Let's stop there and then maybe we can get something to eat or something," Jax said.

When they arrived at Tammy's apartment, she wan't feeling optimistic that her co-worker was home. After knocking several times and calling out her name, no one answered. Dani pulled out a library card from her wallet and tried breaking in.

"What are you doing in front of an officer of the law?" Jax asked.

"What does it look like? I'm making sure a pregnant woman isn't inside alone and hurt," Dani tried again to break in.

"In that case," Jax grabbed the card from her and made quick work of the lock. "These cheap apartments need better locks."

Dani opened the door and flipped on a light, "Tammy? Are you here? Tammy?" It didn't take long to walk through the small studio apartment. "Jax, I think something's wrong."

"Because she's not home?"

"No, because look," Dani pointed at a calendar. All of the days were marked out except for the previous day and the current day. "Also," Dani picked up a half-pound of meat that had been left out for too long. "What if something really did happen to her?"

"All we can do is make a missing person's report and call the hospitals. Maybe she went into labor or something."

"Maybe," Dani was looking around the small apartment when she noticed some flyers on the bed. "What are these?"

"They look like pamphlets for adoption agencies," Jax said as he browsed through them.

"Not all of them. Do you think she was looking for someone to adopt her baby?" Dani asked.

Jax shrugged, "Maybe she didn't want to keep it because the father was a murderer."

Dani frowned, "No way...you've met her before. She's really nice. She wouldn't abandon her baby because of that."

"Dani, you hardly know her. You have no idea what she's capable of. Besides, maybe she just can't afford to care for a baby." He looked around the small apartment. "Maybe she wanted a better life for her baby than what she could provide."

Jax could tell Dani was upset. He grabbed her hand and pulled her forward, "C'mon Dani. Let's get out of here. I'll pull some strings and see if I can get a few officers to check the hospitals until we can file an official report."

Dani stared at their locked hands, "Aren't you afraid I'll see your nightmares?"

"I told you about my brother and Vivian, the woman I almost married. I think you know every dirty secret I have that could possibly scare me," he tugged on her hand and dragged her out of the apartment. "Speaking of fiancées...there's something I should tell you."

"What?"

The corners of Jax's mouth rose, "I'm getting married."
