Chapter 3

Bugs. She could feel them crawling all over her body. She tried focusing on her surroundings, letting her eyes adjust to the darkness. Her bare legs were tied together and covered in dirt.

"Hello?" she called out. "Is anyone there? Can anyone hear me? Help! Please help me!"

A low gravelly voice she faintly recognized answered back, "No one can hear you out here. No one will find you here either."

She looked to her right to see a door with a slight opening covered in bars. Was this some kind of prison?

"Why are you doing this?"

"I told you why," the scratchy voice answered. "I've left some food for you. Eat up. That baby must be healthy."

"Please let me go. Please...please."

The opening quickly shut, leaving her in darkness. A light flickered on above her revealing a small room with a dirt floor and no windows. Her hands covered her large belly, rubbing slowly over the pink fabric of the uniform she wore at King's Diner. As tears rolled down her cheeks, she began singing an old lullaby, "Hush, little baby-"

Dani awoke with tears streaming down her cheeks, "What the hell was that about?"

She rubbed her temples as she tried to make sense of her dream. It didn't take much work to figure out who it belonged to. The person who was dreaming about being abducted was a pregnant waitress at King's Diner.

"Tammy, Tammy, Tammy," Dani clucked. "What are you doing with your life to be having such horrible dreams?"

Dani liked Tammy. She was working while she went to school since her parents had disowned her for becoming pregnant out of wedlock. Dani hadn't believed her at first. It wasn't until her parents had come into the diner to have her sign some paperwork that she realized how alone Tammy Owens really was. Tammy's parents hadn't said much to her and left as soon as they came. Not one question had been asked about her or the baby's health. That's when Dolores had confided to Dani that Tammy had been disowned. Dani couldn't fathom parents cutting a child out of their lives.

On top of everything else, Tammy's unborn child's father had been a murderer. He was also the brother of the Maestro. Dani wondered how Tammy felt about that. She never had the courage to ask the pregnant waitress.

After showering and changing, Dani sent a text message to Dolores letting her know she was on her way. A few moments later, her phone dinged back a response.

"Get here as soon as you can. Tammy didn't show today."

Dani's mouth formed a small O. Tammy didn't show up to work? She thought of her dream and shuddered. Weeks ago, her friend Billy had gone missing. His death still bothered her. She had prayed her dream was wrong and just a strange manifestation from Tammy's daily encounters. Before she headed towards the diner, she grabbed her sketchbook and drew out as much of the dream as she could remember. If Tammy's dream wasn't random, she'd help her in any way she could.

Later that day, Detectives Jax Michaels and Roberto Montoya found themselves at the home of Ryan Sommerby, the widower of Callie Sommerby.

"Your wife was about five months pregnant before she died," Jax noted.

Ryan rubbed his bloodshot eyes, "That's right. We had tried everything to get pregnant but nothing worked. Finally we both got tested and apparently I have slow swimmers and she has...had-" he cut himself off as he began sobbing into a twisted handkerchief he held.

Roberto glanced at his partner with raised eyebrows before turning back to Ryan Sommerby, "Again, we're sorry for your loss. If it's alright with you, we'd like to continue asking you some questions."

"To figure out what happened to her? Of course. Anything," Ryan hiccuped.

Jax cleared his throat and adjusted himself on the leather sofa he was sitting on, "Mr. Sommerby, you reported your wife missing after three days had gone by. Was there a reason you waited?"

"I thought she was at her mother's house. I was out of town at a work conference. She'd been really emotional lately. She cried at everything. She blamed me for everything too. I wasn't sure what was going on. Callie had always been a pacifist. She was into meditation and all that kind of stuff. After she found out she was pregnant, she changed."

"Changed how?" Jax asked.

"Any little thing would set her off. I remember walking in on her while she was on the phone and she just went ballistic. She started throwing things and yelling at me."

"What was she yelling?"

"That it was all my fault," Ryan answered. "She was blaming me for the pregnancy but it was something we both wanted. I even signed up to go to that pregnancy camp with her. I got into a lot of hot water at work for taking so much time off."

"Pregnancy camp?" Roberto repeated as he took notes.

"Yeah. Callie's hypnotist suggested it."

"Your wife was seeing a hypnotist?" Jax couldn't help but ask. "For what?"

Ryan shrugged, "Callie believed in reincarnation. She was hoping the hypnotist would help her unlock her past lives."

Roberto stifled a laugh.

"Getting back to my original question, you and your wife were arguing?" Jax studied the man's face as Ryan dabbed at the corner of his eyes.

"Right. We were arguing about Magestic Waters."

"What's Majestic Waters?" Roberto wrote the name on the pad he held in his hands.

"It's a camp for couples trying to get pregnant. It helps them through the entire process. From conception to birth. The couple that runs it are doctors. When Callie's hypnotist mentioned it to her I said no but after I found out it was run by medical staff...I agreed. The whole thing seemed strange at first but it worked. Callie became pregnant. I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't understand because it's kind of out there if you know what I mean," Ryan explained.

"No, sorry. I don't know what you mean," Roberto said.

"Well...it's very hippie-like. I don't know how else to describe it. Couples that go have to pass three stages. The first stage is getting prepared for conceiving a child. Callie and I had to swim in the lake that's onsite. It's why they call it Majestic Waters. Supposedly some Indian tribe blessed the water so that anyone that swims in it would be fertile. Once you're deemed ready, you move on to the second stage," Ryan wiped at his eyes again as he explained.

"What's the second stage consist of?" Jax was curious to know.

"Sex. Lots of it. They gave us some kind of aphrodisiac. Once you're feeling relaxed, the chances of becoming pregnant increase so they just want you to make love. Before that, you still have to meet with the doctors though. They have to okay you for the second stage."

"Okay you for sex?" Roberto murmured. "Sounds like a scam to me."

Jax frowned at his partner and glanced at Ryan Sommerby who wasn't paying attention. He asked, "You said there were three stages?"

Ryan nodded, "The final stage is to go home. You're supposed to check in with the doctors every month. At your eighth month, you go back to the facility until you're ready to give birth."

Roberto whistled, "Sounds expensive."

"It was," Ryan agreed. "We had to get a second mortgage to pay for it. The doctor that had me identify Callie...she said my wife had an induced miscarriage. I was too distraught to ask but...is that like an abortion?"

Roberto pierced his lips together, "The full story of what happened to your wife is still unknown at this time. What we do know is that she didn't meet her final destination alone. You said you were arguing about Majestic Waters. What exactly were you two arguing about?"

"Callie didn't want to go back. She flat out refused to."

"Did she say why?" Jax glanced at Roberto who was still taking notes.

"No," Ryan answered. "It's why we were fighting. I was about to go out of town for this conference and when I came back we were supposed to go back to Majestic Waters to check in. Callie didn't want to. She said she'd rather just see her regular doctor and not mess with Majestic Waters anymore. I asked why and she refused to tell me. I figured it was just her hormones again. She would constantly change her mind about things with no explanation."

"After your wife said she didn't want to return to Majestic Waters, you became upset? Why?" Jax glanced around the Sommerby's home. It was a modest home typical of a middle-class income.

"Like I said before, Majestic Waters was expensive. You have to pay in advance before you can attend. If we stopped going, that's just throwing money down the drain twice. Towards Majestic Waters and the mortgage payment. Not to mention the cost of the regular doctor."

After Roberto and Jax left the home and were sitting in Jax's Escalade, Roberto asked, "So? What do you think?"

"We know the husband had an alibi. Also, I believe him about not wanting to waste money on that camp or whatever they call it."

"Walking in blessed water? Having to be approved to have sex? Aphrodisiacs? I can't believe there are people who are paying for this kind of crap," Roberto murmured. "When Gladys and I finally decide to have kids...it'll be the old fashioned way."

"What exactly is the old fashioned way?" Jax couldn't help but ask, a sly smile on his face.

"After we've both had too much to drink and by accident."

Jax laughed, "I'm going to tell Gladys you said that."

"You tell her and I'll tell that waitress you secretly take pictures of her at the diner."

"What? I do not!"

Roberto shrugged, "You think she's going to believe that? I have the face of a truth-teller."

Jax harrumphed, "More like the face of a lumber-jack."

"A handsome lumber-jack," Roberto grinned, stroking his bearded cheeks.

"In all seriousness, I think we need to check out this place called Magestic Waters," Jax said.

"If we go in there flashing our badges, we won't find out a thing," Roberto sighed. "Maybe we should request to go undercover."

"In case you've forgotten, we're both men. Neither of us can have babies."

"We could ask for a female detective to assist," Roberto reminded him. "You'll have to pretend to be in a committed relationship, Jax. Can you handle that?"

Jax sneered, "Of course I can. There's only one female in our unit though."

"Sally," they both said at the same time and groaned.

Roberto laughed, "Butch women want babies too Jax."

"Why can't you do go undercover?"

"You want me to pretend to be married to another woman? Gladys would kill me!"

"Not if she saw Sally," Jax muttered.

"It won't be so bad. I'll tell you what. Let's go to King's Diner. Maybe you'll get to see your girlfriend. That always cheers you up."

"She's not my girlfriend," Jax reminded him.

He started the car and turned on the radio but still managed to hear his partner Roberto reply, "Yet."
