The fire George had set earlier now burned cosily in the grate, warming the room. The sun had set a good couple of hours ago and the room was chilly.
Methodically, he covered the table with a clean white cloth and placed the chess set in the centre, with all the pieces on their squares, then set a brandy glass at each end of the table. The poisoned jelly in the bottom of one had set nicely, forming a clear, invisible coating.
George smiled, satisfied that the scene was set.
Gerald knocked and entered, never knowing he'd been set up.
