The Scan
"I won't glow in the dark, will I?" asked Mavis, half-jokingly as the technician inserted a needle into her arm.
The technician smiled perfunctorily. She had obviously heard that one before. Still, it wasn't everyday you had a radioactive substance injected into your body.
Obediently, Mavis raised both arms above her head and held them still. She was surprised at how quickly that became uncomfortable but she had to stay motionless for the next ten minute. Moving a millimetre at a time, the white metal machine rose slowly from one side of her body. Eventually, after ten minutes, it came to a stop, only centimetres from the top of her chest.
The assistant came in and cheerfully allowed her to stretch for a few minutes before starting again. "This one will be quicker," she said.
Eventually, the procedure was over and Mavis sat up, relieved to get the feeling back in her arms.
"Now, you can have a seat in the waiting room, while the doctor assesses the scans. If we find a positive result for blood clots in your lungs, we'll let your doctor know."
"Okay," agreed Mavis, with a smile. There was no way she had blood clots (she felt fine apart from that annoying cough) but her specialist had wanted to exclude the possibility.
Sitting in the waiting area, Mavis pulled out her book and began to read. Half way through the chapter, her phone pinged and she checked her messages. That was quick, one from her doctor already.
"URGENT!"
