Downward Spiral
"Of course she wasn't a ghost, ghosts are evil! Except for Moana's grandmother," Roman retorted.
"Well if there's one thing I know; Reece Witherspoon isn't eVIL!" Patton said, placing his hand over his mouth. Roman raised an eyebrow in confusion as Patton stared back at him with wide eyes but he decided not to think too much of it.
"I resent that, ghosts aren't evil," Virgil added. "They just scare people because you never know when they're gonna sHOW UP—"
Roman flinched at Virgil's Tempest Tongue. "Okay okay I take back what I said about ghosts!" He reassured. Suddenly, Roman felt a something hit his head hard. Roman almost began to see stars as he began to feel dizzier and dizzier until Roman finally crashed to the floor.
The world was black and Roman knew exactly who would do this. Roman sat up and looked around the blackness. "Remus..." Roman muttered with gritted teeth. His head throbbed in pain as his stood up. Roman looked around, trying to get an idea of where he was. When the sides dreampt, they were immediately put into the imagination; Roman just had to figure out which part of the imagination he was in.
Roman then turned and saw a small light with a small figure in a high chair and a woman with a spoonful of food. Roman took a few steps closer. He saw Thomas shaking his head and pursing his lips tightly. The woman in front of him still held the spoon in front of him stubbornly.
"Come on, sweety, eat your food," The woman said in a kind tone.
"No mommy I dont want the mash potatoes!" He yelled dramatically. He pushed the bowl away from him, almost pushing it all off the table. Thomas's mother sighed.
Roman remembered. Roman was always picky but the reason that memory came to him now; he had no idea. Roman didnt see anything else so he decided to walk toward Thomas and his mother. Roman watched his arm as it reached out to rest onto his mother's shoulder, but his arm slid through and Thomas along with everything else turned to dust and swept away like it was never there. Roman stumbled in surprised and watched as the light that was once there faded.
"Too pink!" Roman heard a voice shout. Roman turned and saw a new source of light which held two small figures. One of them had a red and white T-Shirt and basketball shorts and a paper crown on his head. The other had a pale blue shirt, cargo shorts, and glasses. Roman raised an eyebrow and walked towards them. "Too purple!" The one with the crown insisted.
The other lowered the purple infinity scarf. "But purple is a sign for Royalty!"
"I don't care! It's too dull! And sad! I want something bold, something that makes me stand out!" Little Roman stood there, tapping his chin in thought before suddenly he snapped his fingers. "Red!" He shouted. "Patton, I want red!"
Little Patton went through the sashes and scarves. "We don't have red," he finally muttered.
"Then go get red!" He yelled.
Roman stepped a bit closer. He saw Little Patton's glasses fog up as tears hit the glass. "No..." Roman muttered. "That never happened. I would never..."
"GET OUT OF HERE ANXIETY, YOU STUPID ROBERT DOWNER JUNIOR!" Roman perked up and whipped around, the light behind him fading along with his younger self and Patton.
"No!" Roman yelled, his voice echoing through the empty black space. "I'm not like that anymore! I'm...I'm different now!"
"Shut up, Nerd, what would you know?!" Roman whipped around again to see himself facing Logan, Logan's head hung down.
"Are you sure?" A new voice echoed. "Are you a new person?"
Remus
"Stop! I know what you're doing, Remus!"
"We can't move on, Patton!" Roman turned once more to a new source of light, Patton's tears spilling onto his glasses.
"Roman..."
"No! Patton, what if he comes back?! Then we'd be moved on and he'll feel just like Thomas is feeling.. what we're feeling! Do you want that?!"
"No I..." Roman searched for an excuse for what he'd done to Patton trying to convince him to stay in the terrible spot they were in. "I didn't mean..."
"You just can't help hurting people, can you?" Roman could almost hear the smirk on Remus's face. Roman turned and saw Remus almost 10 feet in front of him. Roman gritted his teeth. The lights and hurtful memories vanished around him. Remus chuckled. "What is it, dear brother? Cat got your tongue?"
Roman growled before he suddenly heard a small "meow". Roman turned and saw a black cat with some sort of small meat in its mouth. Roman's eyes widened when he suddenly realized what the cat had in his mouth. "AAH!" Roman screamed.
Remus cackled loudly. "OOH IT NEVER GETS OLD!" He wiped a tear from the corner of his eye and the cat poofed away and Roman's tongue was back in his mouth where it belonged. Roman sighed in relief, placing his hand on his chest.
Roman then stepped a few steps towards his brother. He stepped when he was only a few steps away from him. Roman went to grab him shining sword but quickly realized it wasnt with him like it usually was. "Roman, don't you see that...we're not so different you and I. In fact, you're just like me! And I'm just like you!"
Roman growled angrily. "I'm nothing like you."
"No, of course you're not," Remus chuckled. "Which is why you hate Virgil. Which is why you hate Logan. And which is why you use Patton's vulnerability to you're advantage. Yes. Nothing like me."
Roman had had enough. He raised his fist and ran towards Remus with nothing but rage plastered on his face. Then, Remus' figure vanished into air and Roman stumbled through the darkness. Roman panted, already out of breath with all of his temper.
Roman saw another light in front of him but this one didn't show any of his friends. This light instead held a mirror. Roman cautiously walked over to it, still looking around incase Remus was still hiding in the darkness.
"What if we became King again, Roman? I and you aren't different anyways!"
Roman stared in the mirror, his eyes wide. Instead of his reflection, he saw his brother. "No!" Roman yelled. "No! I'm not like you! I'm a good person!"
"Are you now?!" Remus laughed hysterically. "Oh dear brother! Oh, oh dear brother..." The reflection in the mirror faded. Roman stared blankly back at himself. The mirror began to crack lightly. The cracks in the mirror began to get bigger and bigger until the cracks landed at the very edge of the frame.
In every section of the broken mirror were his friends. Patton was on his knees, his head held in his hands, shaking and obviously sobbing. Virgil was on the bottom right. Virgil's makeup was smeared down his face as hot tears stained his cheeks. Virgil was wearing his old hoodie but he was still wearing the purple shirt he always wore. His knees were brought close to his chest as he panted violently. And finally there was Logan, tears streaming down his face, but he contained himself. Logan only took of his glasses and wiped his tears that never stopped streaming down his cheeks.
"Listen, Roman," Remus' voice echoed. "You've hurt far too many people to be a 'good person'. So if you're not a bad person...what are you then?"
Roman stared at his friends in the mirror.
Did I do that?
Roman shook his head.
The mirror vanished and in its place stood Remus. "That's the thing about 'good' and 'bad'," Remus continued. "Its all made up. I'm not good. You're not good." Roman stares at his brother, his eyes furrowed as he continued. "But we're not bad either!" Remus placed his hand on Roman's shoulder.
Roman joulted back, shoving Remus' hand off. "The last thing I want to be is like you!" Roman said.
Remus' face darkened. "Fine. Be that way."
The light that shined over Remus vanished and the room was dark again. Roman could barely see his brother. Actually...he couldn't see him at all. He was gone. Roman cautiously stepped back, looking around in the dark best he could.
Suddenly, Roman's foot slipped. Before Roman knew it, he was falling. Darkness surrounded him until he could barely see his hand in front of him. "Maybe Remus was right," Roman whispered to himself. "I hurt my friends. I hurt Patton. And then I hurt Virgil. And now I'm hurting Logan."
Roman felt his back suddenly hit a surface like concrete, and then sank. The water was dark and cold. It made Roman shiver. He then heard another voice echo around him. "The truth is, you had those thoughts, Thomas."
"Oh no. Oh no! Is...Thomas a bad person?" Patton asked.
Roman was about to say something. He wanted to scream "No! This is all The Duke's fault! He isn't Thomas!" But when Roman opened his mouth to speak, his throat filled up with the cold icy water around him. Plus, Roman was dreaming. They couldn't hear him even if he wanted them to.
Then, it hit him.
Roman was dreaming.
Roman shut his eyes tightly and imaged himself back to the surface. Fresh air would be night. The outside. Roman imagined himself dry inside his castle that lay inside the imagination.
Roman then felt his back hit a solid surface. Roman coughed and gasped for air as he rolled onto his knees spitting out any water that was still in his lungs. Though Roman was still soaked and he wasn't in his castle. When Roman finally caught his breath, he sat up and raked his hand through his hair and looked around. It was still dark, but this time he saw walls painted white and the floor was cold concrete. Roman sighed.
Roman knew the difference between this dream and the dreams he normally had. This dream was controlled by Remus. Roman could only do so much. Roman knew his brother would do everything in his power to turn against his friends. But Roman knew better.
