Chapter 21

Third Person POV

"She's going to kill us," Willow muttered, looking at the remains of the leather pants that she'd cut off Jesse's body with one of the razor sharp knives that had been on her back. Luckily, she was wearing a men's thong with a pouch in front, so it was easy to see the wounds on the bare left cheek. They'd stopped cutting now that they were mobile because they didn't want to cut up Jesse.

"I see 2 in the ass, 2 in the calf, and one in the thigh," Lexie noted. "There is 1 in the back of her head too, but I think that was a ricochet because it's just under the skin, and not into the bone. I hope."

"We can't exactly operate here. We can just try to slow the bleeding."

"This isn't exactly how I wanted to get her out of her clothes," Lexie grumbled.

"Let's keep her alive, and maybe next time we'll do it the right way!"

"I can't believe this happened. We were doing so well!"

"I know, I know. Help me take the shirt off, we'll have to see what else we have." Willow started pulling the skintight tee shirt up but was afraid to do too much. "Shit, we need to cut this off too. The sleeves are going to be a pain."

"Bella!" Lexie called to the teen who was driving. "Keep it steady for a minute, we're using the knife!"

"We're good! No traffic!"

They'd made it through Albany and were into Massachusetts already. The traffic was thankfully light on a Sunday afternoon, but they weren't risking going faster, as they could never explain this to a cop. The scenery was gorgeous, since they were driving through the Adirondack mountains, but the pair in the back never noticed. Bella did, but she couldn't enjoy it with the nerves that had her on edge. But the road was clear, so this was as safe as it could be for getting the shirt off. They'd already tied off some of the wounds that they'd seen, but there were too many of them, and the blood was still flowing. It was hard to do much to a wound on the ass besides put pressure on it. They couldn't operate and get the bird shot out, nor could they stitch it up. It wasn't a good situation.

With the car running smoothly though, they were able to cut off the shirt, and see what they were dealing with. "3 more in the arm, one in the ribs." Willow was getting nervous. She'd seen patients bleed out with less wounds than this in an Emergency Room, and they had no good options. "We need more supplies."

"Yeah. Maybe if we had a pharmacy, we could do a makeshift surgery," Lexie agreed.

"Do you need me to get off the highway?" Bella asked over her shoulder. She'd been listening in on the conversation and didn't want anything bad to happen to Jesse.

"Yes, try to find a place with a pharmacy if you can!" Willow directed. It wouldn't be perfect, but there were a lot of things that they could get there that would be a step up from what they'd been doing with the rags they'd made from cut up bed sheets.

The next exit was for a place called Lee, Massachusetts, and Bella got off the highway there. "Will a Walgreens work? I see one of those off to the left!"

"Perfect! Get us there!"

A few minutes later, Willow was in the Walgreens, looking through the First Aid section for things that she could use to help take better care of Jesse than they currently could, but was feeling a little overwhelmed. There was a lot to choose from, but not as much as she would have liked. She grabbed a pair of tweezers from the Health and Beauty area, hoping that they could maybe use that to remove the little birdshot pieces, and then picked up a lot of pain killers, disinfectants, alcohol swabs, tape and gauze.

"Home surgery?" asked a tall brunette, who was holding some sunscreen, a bandage and some antiseptic cream. She was smiling, as though she were joking, but Willow just nodded absently.

"Something like that."

She never noticed the other woman taking a second look at her and picking up on the blood splattered on her shirt and pants. A frown ghosted over her features, and she looked as though she were going to say more but hesitated when she saw her grab band aids.

"Try the butterfly ones, they might work better, depending on the wound," the stranger suggested. "Or grab some crazy glue to use in a pinch."

Willow thought about that then nodded. "That might work, thanks."

The stranger shrugged, but her curiosity made her follow Willow around the pharmacy, and she ended up in the checkout line behind her. Willow quickly paid, and then raced out to the car, getting into the back seat, and leaning over into the rear of the SUV and spreading out the loot for the two of them to see what they could do.

"Should I leave?" Bella asked.

"Just a second, I want to see if we can use the tweezers to get the shotgun shell pieces out of the wounds, and I don't want the car moving for that!"

None of them noticed the woman walking over to look through the still open door, her eyes wide at the vision of Jesse laying in the back, with her blood all over.

"How bad is she?" the woman snapped, startling Willow and Lexie. They shared a look, not sure how much to share. "Sorry, my name is Alex, and I'm a surgeon, but I can't help if I don't know what is going on."

"Gunshot," Willow finally answered. "Looked like a shotgun, and some got through her body armor. It happened less than 2 hours ago."

"Anything serious?"

"Most of it is in safe locations, but one in her ribs and one in the back of her scalp might be bad. The bleeding is hard to stop though." Lexie let Willow take the lead on this, as her Emergency Room experience would help here.

"Okay. Follow me, I'm taking you to my place, we just need to make a quick stop. We can patch her up a lot better there than in the back of a car." Everyone in the car just stared at her for a moment. "Come on, lets save your friend!"

"Lexie, can you take the wheel?" Willow asked, afraid that the driving might become a little more frantic than Bella could handle with the minimal driving she'd done.

"Yeah. I hope this works!"

Alex pulled up in a nice looking white SUV, and Lexie pulled their car in right behind her. They headed away from the highway, but just for a minute before Alex pulled into a hardware store that was just down the road. She ran in, then right back out with a small bag a minute later before getting on the road.

"What did she need there?" Bella wondered.

"I have no idea, but I hope it helps, whatever it was," Lexie muttered.

Alex was driving pretty fast, and Lexie did the same to keep up, so Willow kept her hands on Jesse to keep her from rolling around. It wasn't long before they were out of town, and into the woody hills surrounding the many lakes in the area. For the second time that day, they drove up to a big house, though this one put the ones back in Albany to shame, as it was at least double the size and overlooking a gorgeous lake.

The automatic garage door was opening as the two cars pulled up, and Alex parked outside, quickly marching over to the Audi. "Pop the hatch!"

Willow crawled out as the hatch was going up, and Bella and Lexie ran back to join them as soon as the engine was off. "Can we all take a corner of the comforter she's on, like a little sling?"

"We can do that, yeah." Alex pulled at one of the corners, and started lifting, while the other girls each took a side as well. It took a little doing, but they got her through the garage, and then into the closest room, which happened to be the dining room. "Up on the table." Alex lifted her corner, and then slid Jesse's body onto the top of the table.

Alex handed the bad from the hardware store over to Willow. "Sterilize these, we'll see if we can get all of the projectiles out."

Willow looked into the bag, and saw an x-acto hobby knife, with a variety of blades. She nodded her head in approval. It wasn't a scalpel, but it was razor sharp and would work in a pinch. "I'm on it." She pulled the alcohol swabs and set to work.

Bella stood by watching, shifting from foot to foot nervously and unsure of what she could do to help. Lexie got the rest of the loot from the pharmacy, laying it out for easy access, and none of them noticed the other two women who padded in barefoot behind them. One was a blonde, the other a brunette, and they both just stared at the scene in front of them in shock.

"Uhhhm Alex sweetheart?" The blonde woman looked at all of them with a confused look, but her statement was definitely towards Alex.

"Alex, you were just supposed to come back with more sunscreen and a bandage for Jonah!" growled the brunette. "What the hell is happening here? Who are these people?"

Alex didn't even look up, but Willow, Lexie and Bella all jumped in surprise. "Gunshot wounds. Just helping out lovies. Let me get her patched up and we'll get more information. But I got everything from the store, sorry I just forgot to bring them in!"

"I can get them!" Bella offered so she would feel a little less like a nuisance.

"No, I got it." The blonde stated with a hard glare. "Everyone else can stay right here and Alex, please don't let any blood get on the chairs or the carpet."

"I'll do my best" Alex mumbles under her breath and the blonde made her way outside to get the bag from the car.

The blonde was back in under a minute with the bag that Alex had bought, though her look showed that she was still very upset.

Everyone was burning with questions, but nobody wanted to say anything while Alex worked. She was an excellent surgeon, and some of the pellets were in places that were easy to get to. The calf and biceps weren't bad, and the shot to the ribs did in fact hit and break a rib. But that rib also stopped the shot from travelling deeper, so it was a good thing. As soon as she was done with each one, Willow sealed them up with the super glue and a butterfly bandage. So far, it was working perfectly.

The head wound was a little more troubling though. Alex was easily able to get the pellet out from under Jesse's hair line, but the positioning left her concerned. "I'd really like an x-ray. It concerns me that she's unconscious when you've done a decent job slowing the blood flow. She most likely isn't unconscious from the blood loss, but something else. The two most likely culprits are the pellet that I just removed, and the big bruise on her forehead."

"I'll be right back," Willow said, jogging out to the Audi and then getting into the back to get the helmet that Jesse had been wearing. She swore when she saw a big dent in the front, and brought it in to show Alex, just in case it was helpful. "She took a blow to the front of the head. I think we were so concerned about the bleeding that we never noticed." Willow was internally kicking herself, and Lexie pulled her into a hug.

"You did great, baby. Don't beat yourself up. You did a wonderful job getting her this far."

"She's right," Alex agreed while she rolled Jesse onto her belly to look at the two wounds on her left butt cheek. "If you hadn't done what you did in the back of that car, she'd probably already be dead."

"And who was trying to kill her?" the other brunette asked.

Nobody answered for a moment, until Bella pulled up her phone. It took her almost no time at all to pull up an article on the rescue and massacre back at the club in Indiana. She handed the phone over to the girls so they could read it. "She rescued 43 girls from forced prostitution overnight. She rescued all 3 of us from the same fate a few days before that. Then she saved another 4 just before we got here. The people running the ring were the ones that hurt her. She's not the bad guy."

A sudden cry from Jesse made everyone jump.

"Hold her down, I'm almost done!" Alex cried out, and Willow and Lexie quickly did. Willow lay across her lower back while Lexie grabbed the back of each thigh and held her down.

Bella moved to her face and put her lips to her ear. "You're almost done. We have a doctor fixing you. Just bear with it!"
