Late

My alarm was ringing. Ringing for a long time.

I rubbed my sleepy eyes and touched the snooze option.

Turning around, grabbing a pillow, I again dived into a slumber.

----------------

A phone call jolted me back from sleep.

A look at my screen left me pale.

It was 18.10.

The play 'Hamlet' was scheduled from 18.30.

Damn! I was terribly late.

Grabbing my jacket and the tickets, quickly brushing the tangles out of my hair, I rushed out of the hotel.

It was by sheer luck that I had taken one close to the MDT.

Reaching Rubinstein St, I looked at my watch.

18.20!

I just hoped that they had not closed the gates.

MDT was on the other side, the majestic white building, with the words 'АСАДЕМИЧЕСКИЙ МАЛЫЙ ДРАМАТИЧЕСКИЙ ТЕАТР' carved in gold, atop which sat a majestic black symbol.

Without looking, I rushed to cross the road.

I horn and the sound of screeching brakes, brought me to my senses, as I looked just in time to see the headlights of a car which had slammed the brakes.

I closed my eyes in fright, dropping to the ground. My glasses disappeared somewhere.

------------------------------------------------

"Menya ochen' zhal'.Ty v poryadke?...(I'm so sorry, Are you okay)?"

A voice startled me and I carefully uncovered my face to realise that I was well and truly alive. Not crushed by the car.

But the voice was what surprised me the most. It was a voice I would have recognized anywhere. It was a voice I would take with myself to the end of the world.

I looked at the person unable to say a word.

I burst out crying.

"Vy raneny...(Are you hurt?)," his voice was concerned.

"N...No, m...my glasses," I choked, "I'm practically blind without them."

"Oh they're here. Sorry, I didn't know you didn't speak Russian," he offered his hand to help me stand up, handing me the glasses.

I was so dazed that I even forgot to take the hand.

He held my arm by himself and finally I stood up and said, "Spasibo...I can understand a bit of Russian."

"Wow! You can," his gorgeous brown eyes shone with excitement.

"Yes, I learnt it for you, sir."
He was taken aback and then a broad smile lit up his face.

That smile made my heart flutter like a lamp about to go off.

"You're interesting," he commented, "You came to watch 'Hamlet'?"

I nodded.

"See you after the show. Wait for me backstage. Just say to them that I had invited you. And sorry again," he said, lowering his eyes.

"It's my fault. I was in a hurry to see you," I confessed.

"Nothing should be more important to you than your safety. Actually I got late too," he grinned.

And then he was gone in a jiffy, leaving me staring after the mysterious man.

Who would have known I am crazy enough to come under the car of Danila Kozlovsky.

Shaking my head, I entered through the doors of the Maly Drama Theatre.
