MAKING IT TO THE CRASH SITE, HAVING JACK LEAD, they stopped on the other side of the train tracks. Jack pointed. "There it is." Lily squinted her eyes to see better. Only a few lights lit up the night. "Hey," He leaned closer and then grinned, dimples and all. "They've got Algy on duty. It must be important."
Lily saw this 'Algy' speaking to a fellow soldier near a tent. "We've got to get past him." The Doctor said.
"Alright." Lily looked at Jack. "Should it be me or Rose?"
Jack stopped her. "I don't think that'd be such a good idea." She raised a brow and waited for his explanation. "I've got to know Algy quite well since I've been in town. Trust me, you're not his type." He definitely could read her thoughts through her eyes. "Yeah, that's right. You're not the only one here not particular to any gender." After tapping the tip of Lily's nose he started walking away, calling over his shoulder as he went. "I'll distract him. Don't wait up."
Lily folded her arms and watched Jack. "The guy flirts with me all while having another guy on speed dial."
"Don't worry." The Doctor took a step closer to Lily's side. "Remember?" When Jack disappeared into the tent, Lily looked up at the time lord. "He's a fifty-first century guy. He's just a bit more flexible when it comes to dancing."
Rose tilted her head. "How flexible do you think he is?"
"Guys!" Jack's cries interrupted Lily from giving her baby sister a piece of her mind.
The trio ran over the train tracks, easily not alerting any guards, and entered the tent stopping short when they witnessed Algy's face turn into a gas mask. "Oh my god!" Lily exclaimed, nearly gagging.
"Stay back!" The Doctor ordered as soon as they regrouped.
"You men! Stay back!" Jack ordered the remaining soldiers who stood nearby, watching the scene with widened eyes.
The Doctor eyed Algy, who had yet to move to attack them. Like he was sleeping almost. "The effect's become air-borne, accelerating."
Air raid sirens blared from across the sky. "What's keeping us safe?" Rose asked.
"Nothing," The Doctor regretfully informed her and Lily. "Nothing is keeping us safe."
They heard planes pass overhead, and Jack stuck his head outside. "Sh, here they come again."
"All we need." Lily groaned, looking over at Jack. "Didn't you say a bomb was going to land here?"
"Never mind that." The Doctor said. "If the contaminants are airborne now, there are hours left."
"For what?" Jack asked.
"Till nothing. Forever. For the entire human race." The Doctor frowned. "And can anyone else hear singing?"
✧
The Doctor and Rose returned after a minute or two accompanied by a young woman with dark braids. Lily understood she was the source of the singing. After a short introduction, Lily learned that her name was Nancy and she had met the Doctor and Rose while Lily was with Jack. After, they started to the crash site.
"You see?" Jack said after he uncovered the craft. "Just an ambulance."
"That's an ambulance?" Nancy looked puzzled.
Rose held her under her arm, keeping her close to her side to comfort her. "It's hard to explain." The blonde told her. "It's from another world."
Jack examined the damage to the ship. "They've been trying to get in,"
"Of course they have." The Doctor replied. "They think they've got their hands on Hitler's latest secret weapon." He watched as Jack started punching in a code. "What're you doing?"
"The sooner you see this thing is empty, the sooner you'll know I had nothing to do with it."
All three of the girls tried to shield themselves from the sparks that flew off the panel, followed by a sharp bang- alarms started radiating off of it. "What the hell, Jack!" Lily shouted over the noise.
"That didn't happen last time!"
"It hasn't crashed last time." The Doctor pointed out. "There'll be emergency protocols."
Rose's head jerked up when she heard a loud bang. "Doctor, what is that?"
Lily saw the source of the noise- the hospital doors in the distance began to rattle. "Doctor?" The army patients were now out the doors and walking towards them.
"Captain, secure those gates!" The Doctor ordered after seeing what Lily saw.
"Why?" He retorted.
"Just do it!" The Doctor snapped, turning to Nancy. "Nancy, how'd you get in here?"
"I cut the wire." She replied.
"Show Lily and Rose." He looked at Lily and tossed her his sonic. "Setting two thousand four hundred and twenty-eight D." He told her and she tried to soak in the information. "Reattach the barbed wire." He then begged them. "Be careful."
"Of course." Lily smiled at Nancy. "Lead the way."
✧
With all three girls kneeling in the dirt, Rose held together the wire while Lily used the sonic to reattach them. Nancy was watching them beside Rose. "Who are you?" She asked, earning a sideways glance from Lily. "Who are any of you?"
Rose let out a small chuckle, connecting the next two wires. "You'd never believe me if I told you."
"You just told me that was an ambulance from another world." Nancy reminded her. "There are people running around with gas mask heads calling for their mummies, and the sky's full of Germans dropping bombs on me. Tell me, do you think there's anything left I couldn't believe?"
Lily spoke up, deciding to tell Nancy the truth. "We're time travelers from the future."
"Mad, you are," Nancy answered back quickly.
Rose laughed. "She's telling the truth! We have a time-traveling machine. seriously!"
"It's not that," Nancy assured her. "All right, you've got a time travel machine. I believe you. Believe anything, me. But," She looked up at the sky. "what future?"
Rose gave Lily a look who was quick to nod, giving her permission. "Nancy, this isn't the end." Rose smiled at her. "I know how it looks, but it's not the end of the world or anything."
"How can you say that?" Nancy exclaimed, gesturing to the polluted sky. "Look at it!"
"Listen to me," Lily finished up the fence, leaning a tad over Rose so Nancy could meet her eyes. "I was raised in this city." She put a hand on Rose's shoulder. "Rose was born and raised in London. We're from here, in like, fifty years' time."
Nancy blinked. "Here?"
"Yep." Rose beamed. "From your future."
"But . ." Nancy stuttered. "but you're not-"
"What?"
"German?"
Lily couldn't help but chuckle. "Nancy, the Germans don't come here. They don't win. Don't tell anyone I told you so, but you know what? You win!"
"We win?" Nancy grinned, seemingly feeling much better now.
