32 - Dalek (Part III)
Continuing from 'Dalek - Part II'

IT WASN'T LONG AFTER THEY SHUT AND LOCKED THE DOOR THE DOCTOR'S FACE APPEARED ON THE SCREEN OF THE CONTROL PANEL. Lily has never been more happy to see his face. "You've got to keep it in that cell!" He warned them.
Lily addressed the screen. "Doctor, I am so sorry." She voiced, seeing Rose move closer to her in the corner of her eye. "It's all my fault."
"I've sealed the compartment." One of the guards spoke. "It can't get out, that lock's got a billion combinations."
"But that won't work!" The Doctor argued with him. "A Dalek's a genius. It can calculate a thousand billion combinations in one second flat!"
There was the sound of an electronic beep and then the door opened revealing the Dalek. Lily worked fast at grabbing Rose and pushing her behind her, repositioning herself to block Rose from any harm. "It's gotten through!" She cried to the Doctor.
All four of the guards raised their guns. "Open fire!"
"Don't shoot it!" Van Statten ordered from the screen but the guards kept firing- Lily and Rose both flinching as the bullets flew off the Dalek. "I want it unharmed!"
"Lily! Get you and Rose out of there!"
"De Maggio," One guard stopped shooting to direct at the female guard. "Take the civilians and get them out alive. That is your job, got that?"
She nodded and beckoned to Lily, Rose, and Adam. "You three, with me."
✧
After racing through the corridors and passing several guards camping out the Dalek, the group made it to the stairwell. "Stairs!" Rose laughed, putting a hand on the railing. "That's more like it. It hasn't got legs. It's stuck!" She grabbed Lily's wrist and started pulling her up the steps.
"Uh, Ro?" Lily followed behind, concerned that Rose had forgotten a few things the Dalek could do. "I don't think this will work."
"How come?" Rose only stopped once all four of them made it to the closest stair landing.
Adam interrupted her, leaning over the railing and laughing at the Dalek that was now paused at the end step, looking down at it. "Great big alien death machine defeated by a flight of stairs." He laughed. Lily cringed and stayed beside Rose- keeping a hand on her wrist, getting mentally ready to run
De Maggio aimed her gun at the Dalek when it looked up at them. "Now listen to me. I demand that you return to your cage. If you want to negotiate then I can guarantee that Mister van Statten will be willing to talk. I accept that we imprisoned you and maybe that was wrong, but people have died, and that stops right now. The killing stops. Have you got that?" The Dalek stayed silent and Lily could have sworn he was staring right at her. "I demand that you surrender. Is that clear?"
"Elevate."
Rose held in a gasp and widened her eyes. "Oh god, I remember." She said before it started to hover and glide up the stairs.
"I told you it wouldn't work." Lily groaned, pulling Rose away and further up the staircase.
"Adam get them out of here!" De Maggio ordered.
"Come with us!" Lily paused her feet to beg her. "You can't stop it!"
"Someone's got to try." De Maggio replied. "Now get out! Don't look back. Just run."
And they did with the screams of De Maggio dying cries behind them.

Lily, Rose, and Adam outran the Dalek just feet behind them and made it a loading bay. A guard that jumped up from behind a crate frightened the trio, forcing them to pause. "Hold your fire!" A different guard that was stationed above them on a catwalk ordered- the rest of the guards barely lowered their guns. "You three, get the hell out of there!"
They did as they were told, moving out of the opening towards an alcove. But they did stop promptly to witness the Dalek stroll in and get fired at, the bullets deflecting off his armor. And yet again, just like before, the Dalek was looking right at Lily.
When the guards started dying they moved out of the alcove and went around the corner out of sight. "It was looking at you, Lily!" Rose pointed out.
"Yeah? 'Cos it wanted to slaughter her!" Adam replied.
"No." Rose shook her head. "It was looking right at you. Like it knew you somehow?"
"So?" Lily shrugged. "It's just its metal eye thing. It's looking all around."
"I'm serious, Lils!" Rose exclaimed, following behind when Lily and Adam took off in a jog down the corridor. "Isn't there a creature inside it? It was looking at you like it knew you!"
Lily was going to console Rose but was stopped from doing so when her phone started ringing. With an eye roll, she took it out of her back pocket and didn't even have to look at the caller ID to know who it had to be. "Doctor?" Lily controlled her panting as she kept the same running pace as Rose and Adam. "You know this isn't the best time for a chat?"
"Where are you?" He demanded.
Lily followed behind up the stairwell, reading the signs on the wall. "Level 49."
"You've got to keep moving. The vault's being sealed off up at level forty-six."
Lily stumbled on a step and struggled to keep up with Adam and Rose who were both a few feet in front of her. "Can't you stop them from closing?"
"I'm the one who's closing them. I can't wait and I can't help you." Lily swallowed at his reply. "Now for God's sake . . . run!"
✧
They exited the stairwell and started racing down various connecting corridors. Lily was still trucking behind them. "We're nearly there!" Lily huffed to the Doctor. "Give us two seconds!" And then put her phone down to call out to her sister between breaths. "Faster Rose!"
Lily watched as the door at the end of the corridor started lowering. "Come on!" Adam called to the sisters as he was only able to roll under the door.
Rose was right behind him and followed his lead, getting to the other side. Once she stood back up she quickly kneeled and yelled through the gap that only got smaller and smaller. "Come on, Lils! Run! Come on!" She screamed. "NO!"
The ginger was far too late. By the time she reached the door, it was fully shut and possibly soundproof as she couldn't hear Rose or Adam anymore. Lily sighed and tried to catch her breath while resting her forehead on the cool concrete door. With a shaky hand, she brought her phone back up to her ear. "Lily? Did you and Rose make it?"
"Rose did," She let out a sad chuckle. "I was just a bit too slow, I guess." He was completely quiet on his end. Lily looked over her shoulder and saw the Dalek approaching her. So, she turned fully around and leaned her back against the door, her heartbeat lowering. "It wasn't your fault, do you hear me? Remember that." Lily smiled and held back her tears. "Know that you were the best thing that's ever happened to me." The Dalek was getting closer- she was running out of time. "Take care of my sister, okay? Show her everything." She tried to end it with a pitiful joke and chuckle. "And don't mess up my library."
"EXTERMINATE!"
