27 - World War Three (Part IV)

Continuing from 'World War Three - Part III'

HOURS HAD PASSED BY AND BEFORE LONG IT WAS A NEW DAY- all they did was sit in that room and wait and wait and wait. Lily was sitting on top of the table beside Rose, whose head was resting on her sister's shoulder. She had been falling in and out of sleep for the last five minutes. Lily told herself to remember to let Rose know just how proud she was of her when all this was over. Jackie, who along with Mickey stayed up with them, voiced through the phone speaker. "All right, Doctor. I'm not saying I trust you, but there must be something you can do?"

"If we could ferment the port, we could make acetic acid," Harriet suggested, clutching onto a chair like she was trying hard to stay awake and alert.

"Mickey," Rose lifted her head off of Lily- the ginger smoothing down some stray hairs on the blonde's head. "Any luck?"

"There's loads of emergency numbers. They're all on voicemail."

Lily rubbed her eyes with the heels of her palms. "If we could just get out of here."

"There's a way out." The Doctor answered, arms folded and back against the fireplace- not meeting her eyes. "There's always been a way out."

Lily widened her eyes and hopped off the table. "Then why don't we use it?" She asked him.

His blue eyes found her green. "Because I can't guarantee you'll be safe."

"Don't you dare!" Jackie screamed. "Whatever it is, don't you dare!"

"That's the thing." The Doctor gave them all a dark chuckle. "If I don't dare, everybody dies."

Lily closed her eyes and took in a breath before opening them again. "Do it."

"You don't even know what it is?" Astonished, the Doctor looked at her. "You'd just let me?"

Lily looked at Rose who remained on the table. Her sister smiled and Lily knew what she was thinking without even talking. "Yeah," Lily returned the sad smile, looking back at the Doctor. "I've seen your past Doctor. Not just defeats- I've seen what you've accomplished. I trust you."

"Doctor, please," Jackie whispered, pleading with everything in her. "They're my daughters. They're all I have."

"Don't you think I know that?" The Doctor interrupted her- not tearing his eyes away from Lily's. "Because this is my life, Jackie. It's not fun, it's not smart, it's just standing up and making a decision because nobody else will."

Lily's eyes softened. "Then what are you waiting for?"

"I could save the world but lose you." Something passed his eyes when the sudden realization seemed to hit him.

"Except it's not your decision, Doctor." Harriet cut in. "It's mine."

"And who the hell are you?" Jackie demanded.

"Harriet Jones, MP for Flydale North," Harriet answered her with a proud stance. "The only elected representative in this room, chosen by the people for the people. And on behalf of the people, I command you." Her eyes narrowed at the Doctor. "Do it."

"So," Rose started, getting off the table and walked over to Lily's side. "How do we get out?"

"We don't." The Doctor answered her. "We stay here." He moved to grab the red briefcase and searched through the documents it contained, "Mickey, follow my instructions." He spoke to the phone after finding the paper he needed. "Use the buffalo password. It overrides everything."

"What are you doing?" Jackie asked.

"Hacking into the Royal Navy. We're in. Here it is. HMS Taurean, Trafalgar Class submarine, ten miles off the coast of Plymouth."

"Right, we need to select a missile." The Doctor ordered.

"We can't go nuclear." Mickey retorted. "We don't have the defense codes."

"We don't need it. All we need is an ordinary missile." He leaned over the phone, both sisters now on either side of him. "What's the first category?"

"Sub Harpoon, UGM-A4A," Mickey replied.

"That's the one- Select!" The Doctor commanded. "You ready?"

Mickey confirmed. "Ready."

"Mickey the idiot, the world is in your hands. Fire."

There was a sound of a click then Jackie's trembling voice. "Oh my God."

Harriet hurried over to a window shutter and started knocking on the steel. "How solid are these?"

"Not solid enough." The Doctor replied darkly. "Built for short-range attack, nothing this big."

"All right, now I'm making the decision," Rose spoke up, giving Lily a brave grin. "None of us are going to die here." She made sure the Doctor and Harriet were also listening before pushing on. "We're going to ride this one out. It's like what they say about earthquakes. You can survive them by standing under a door frame." Rose walked over to another cupboard and opened it, knocking a fist on the walls to confirm how strong it was. "Now, this cupboard's small so it's strong. Come and help me." She started taking various boxes and files out to make room for them. "Come on!" Lily rushed over to help her and soon after her so were the Doctor and Harriet- rapidly trying to clear everything out.

"It's on the radar!" Mickey's voice suddenly came through the phone. "Counter defense five five six."

"Stop them from intercepting it!" The Doctor ordered in a yell as he continued moving items out.

"Doing it now."

"Good boy!"

A few seconds later Mickey was back on. "Five-five six neutralized."

Lily sprinted to unplug her phone, securing it back into her dress pocket. She then, when the cupboard was cleared out enough, pushed Rose gently down inside. Harriet followed in after and then the Doctor, who closed the door. Lily nestled herself onto the ground with them, between the Doctor and Rose- her back snugged in the corner of the room.

"Here we go," Harriet spoke on the other side of the Doctor. "It was nice knowing you three."

They all joined hands, Lily holding onto the Doctor and Rose, and waited for impact. When the missile hit the ground shook violently- Lily clutched Rose tighter to her side. After about a dozen seconds with the four of them holding onto each other, trying to protect one another as the room began rolling, it stopped.

The Doctor was the first to stand and kicked the door off its hinges, sending it down skittering the road. Harriet walked out after him. "Made in Britain." She patted the wall while the Doctor pulled Lily out, stepping onto the building rubble, and gave her a big hug. She laughed, hugging him tightly to her. Lily only let go of him to help Rose up and out, hugging her as well.

A policeman ran up to them. "Oh, my God! Are you all right?"

Harriet stopped him with the raise of her identification card and badge. "Harriet Jones. MP, Flydale North. I want you to contact the UN immediately." She ordered him, tall and proud. "Tell the ambassadors the crisis is over. They can step down. Go on, tell the news!"

"Yes ma'am." He replied, then jogged off.

"Someone's got a hell of a job sorting this lot out," Harriet commented to the trio. Her eyes widened when she realized something. "Oh, Lord. We haven't even got a Prime Minister!"

"Maybe you should have a go?" The Doctor shrugged.

She pointed to herself. "Me?" then chuckled. "Ha, I'm only a back-bencher."

"I'd vote for you." Lily gave her a warm smile.

"Ditto," Rose said, linking her arm with Lily's.

"Now, don't be silly." she laughed. "Look, I'd better go and see if I can help. Hang on!" She made her way down a pile of rubble and started for the crowds waiting passed the debris on the pavement. "We're safe! The Earth is safe!"

"I thought I knew that name!" The Doctor smugly said as the trio watched her in awe. "Harriet Jones, future Prime Minister. Elected for three successive terms. The architect of Britain's Golden Age."

"The crisis has passed!" Harriet announced to the policemen. "Ladies and gentlemen, I have something to say to you all here today! Mankind stands tall, proud, and undefeated! God bless the human race!"
