Should you already be knowledgeable regarding archetypes and "The Heroic Monomyth", you may likely be able to dispense with this note. However, if not, it would of course be helpful to become familiar with F. Scott Fitzgerald's famous novel, The Great Gatsby and the works of the scholar Joseph Campbell. The best source I know for an introduction to the heroic archetype is Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces. Both reads offer critical background in order to at least achieve some understanding of what the hell I was trying to get at with this admittedly abstract endeavor.
