27.
Rover.
I don't know where I am. All I can hear is a repetitive beep that's starting to get on my nerves. I have no feeling in my body until I'm forced awake and jolt up in a bed.
My breathing is quick and frightening to the point where I feel like I could just pass out again.
"Rover?" A familiar voice says as she comes into my field of vision.
"Aunt Olivia?" I say.
"It's okay," she tells me. "I'll go get the nurse."
"The nurse?" I question.
She gives me a half worried smile, "You're going to be fine."
She walks out of the room and I'm left alone.
I start to notice all the wires connected to me their cold rubber casings keeping me from wanting to go far. I move my right hand to try and get myself free, but I'm stopped by the pain of a needle under the skin of my hand.
I don't want to be here. I want to be with Noah.
"He just woke up," my aunt says as she comes back with a nurse.
"Hi Rover," the woman in scrubs says as she places a hand on my shoulder. "Do you know where you are."
"A hospital?" I cautiously ask.
"Yeah," she smiles. "You've been through a lot."
The only thing I want to know is, "When can I get out of here?"
"You've been in a coma for two months, we need to keep an eye on you," she says.
"Two months?" I shake my head.
"Avery said you didn't wake up one day," my aunt interjects.
"I need to talk to Noah," I say.
"Who?" my aunt asks.
"Noah!" I shout. "I need to find her."
"Who is Noah?" she goes on.
I can't stand the time I'm waisting, "Just give me my phone."
"Slow down," the nurse says, "you need to rest."
"Rest?!" I won't lie that I'm mad. "I've been asleep for two months!"
The nurse grips my arm tighter than when she put her hand on my shoulder. She moves her other hand down to the buttons on the side of the bed. She presses the red one with the bell.
More nurses and a doctor flood my room as I immediately try to struggle my way out of their grasp. They hold me down as I'm injected with something that makes me... go...
My eyes feel heavy, but this time I wake up to my mom sitting beside my bed.
"Mom?" I call out to her faintly.
"Hi honey," she says as she brushes her hand over my hair.
No matter where she is, she's always dressed up as if she's going to work, I don't think I've ever seen her dress any other way.
"I need to get out of here," I tell her, still weak.
"I know," she consoles me. "Soon."
"Is this real?" I ask her.
"Of course it is," she grins.
Part of me hopes it's not.
"Don't worry," she tells me, "we will get through this one day at a time."
Noah.
I'm not sure how to react. Waking up in the last place I thought I would be surrounded by all the things the health care system can offer me.
"Two months?" I can feel my eyes well up with tears. "It was only supposed to be a week."
"Sweetheart," my mom says, "what are you talking about?"
"I was only supposed to sleep for a week," I can barely speak.
"I don't understand," she continues.
"We agreed," is all I say.
"I'm going to go get the doctor again," she starts to walk out of the room.
"Wait!" I stop her. "I'm okay, just tired. I'm going to rest."
She nods, "Okay. I'm going to go grab a coffee then, but I'll be right back."
I turn on to my side, my knees close to my chest as I try not to lose myself.
I miss him. I wish we could have had more time. I wish we had a choice.
He said he wanted to be with me even when we aren't sleeping, so at least I've got that. I'm sure he's probably in the same predicament at the moment. Maybe we just need to find our footing again.
"You scared the shit out of us," Diana says from her chair, "but I'm glad you woke up."
Mom and dad decided to go home and get some rest.
She's eating out of my jello cup, "So, what was it like?"
"What was it like?"
"Yeah. Could you hear dad talking to you non-stop?" she asks.
"Umm," I hum. "No."
"So it was just black?" she goes on.
I sit up, "No, it was kind of amazing."
"Amazing?" she takes another spoonful of jello.
"I've never dreamt like that in my entire life," I tell her. "It's weird to see what people see as fantasy come to life. It's magic."
"Wow," she says, "you must have been tripping really hard."
"What? No," I reply, "it was like I had discovered a whole new universe. One that connects two people no matter where in the world they are. Diana, I met Rover."
"Rover?" she questions back.
"Yes," I say, "he's absolutely amazing and I think I-"
She cuts me off, "I still have no idea who you're talking about."
"Rover?" I repeat.
"Nope," she shrugs.
"Rover Baxton?"
"Are you confused or something?" she asks.
"Diana!" I shout at her to stop messing with me. "Rover Baxton, my celebrity crush?"
"I've never heard that name in my entire life," she says.
"You got to be fucking kidding me," I sigh. "You gave me the job to make the cover for that fanfiction."
"What are you talking about?" she laughs.
"Seeing You Again?" I give her the title.
"You mean the Nick Colton fanfiction - book - thingy?"
"What?" I'm at a loss for words.
"I gave you the job at the beginning of the summer," she tells me, "but then all this happened and we had to find someone else to do it."
I can feel my cheeks get red, "That was my job!"
"Noah," she tries to calm me down, "you need to rest. Don't worry about the small things. There's a whole bunch of new stories that will be coming soon, I'm sure I can get them to let me give you a couple."
I take a breath in and let it out, "Yeah, you're right. I'm sorry."
"Don't be," she nudges me, "you've had it rough."
She gets up to give me a hug, and I can feel it in my bones that this is real, I'm not dreaming.
"Can you pass me my phone?" I ask her.
She smiles as she pulls it out of her purse. "I was keeping it near just in case you woke up, like today."
"Thanks," I tell her.
I put my password in and slide it open. Quickly, I find Twitter and go to my messages. Rover's name isn't there. I search for it. It doesn't exist.
