12.
Just as I sense myself falling into the dark of the night, I'm also lifted back up through the clear and heavy water moving up and down with the waves created by the moon.
I'm treading the sea as best as I can trying to also keep the water out of my lungs when a wall of wood blocks my view. A rope slides down its side to me and I grip it with all the strength I have.
When I'm finally dragged to the top, I stare down the planks under me as I cough up any water that I did accidentally inhale.
A pair of boots appear in front of me, "Get up boy!"
"Sorry?" I say still trying to regain my bearings.
"Get up!" he sternly repeats.
"Please," I beg him, "I just need a minute."
"Captain?" the burly man before me says. "Should we put him in the brig?"
I sit back on my legs, finally getting a look at all the people around me. Most of them looked as if they haven't shaved in weeks and a few of them have very visible scars.
A small group of them move aside as the only woman on the ship walks forward.
"No," she says, "he's a friend."
"A what?!" the man asks.
"I said," she makes herself clear, "he's a friend. Now move! Go back to your work!"
She sticks her hand out for me to take as she helps me to my feet.
"Rover," my familiar companion greets me.
The girl, the girl in my dreams, has her hair tied back and wears the cleanest outfit on the ship.
"This is..." I try to get out in amazement.
"You said you wanted an adventure," she tells me.
"Yeah," I reply still trying to take everything in, my gaze moving from one place to another. "What made you think of this?"
She crosses her arms, "I don't know. Although..." her head tilts slightly, "I used to dream about being a pirate when I was a little girl. No princesses for me."
When I see her smile, her whole expression lights up and I only wish that I knew what that actually felt like.
"Too much fun stabbing people with swords?" I playfully question.
"No," she replies, "it just makes me feel powerful. I've got a boat, I can go wherever I want. It's freedom, you know?"
"That sounds nice," I tell her, "I hope that could be me one day."
"One day?" she says grabbing my shoulders. "You're dreaming it. Well, technically I'm dreaming it, but you can do anything you want here."
"I'm scared I'll like it too much," I give her a light laugh, "I won't ever want to go back."
"That would be two of us," she joins.
A loud thud can be heard before someone shouts, "Captain!"
We're both pulled out of our conversation, The girl whips her head to see what's going on.
Far away but gaining on us rapidly is another ship with its cannons sending off warning shots towards us.
"Prepare for a fight!" she instructs her crew.
"Who are they?" I ask her before she can runoff.
"I don't know," she shrugs. "Probably some asshole I've met like once."
I don't have time to say anything more as she runs up the stairs to take control of the wheel.
Men are dashing past me from every which way, and I have no idea what to do. The burly man that first confronted me pushes me aside as he walks to climb the rope ladder up to the crow's nest.
I have a hard time getting my footing back as the ship veers sharply to the right.
Not knowing what to do, I make my way towards the girl at her post.
"What do I do?!" I worriedly ask her.
She's focussed, yet still says, "Take out your sword!"
"My what?!" I question her over the noise.
"Your sword!" she repeats.
"I don't have a sword!" I tell her my body quivering with what I think may be fear.
"Then, take mine!" she pulls her sabre out of its sheath and hands it to me.
The long metal sword is almost half the height of my body, but the hilt surprisingly fits perfectly in my right hand.
We get closer and closer to the other ship until we're almost touching. Cannons blare and the smoke rises into the sky. Flashes of gun powder turn the space in between our ships into fireworks, some small part of the hull singeing.
Overhead, I see a flock of men swing themselves over to our deck. Their swords are in their hands and ready to fight.
As one of them races towards me, I lift my sword to try and block his attack. I'm barely strong enough to keep him away, but eventually, I am able to sneak my way under his hold and slash my sword right into his back. A few drops of his blood hit my arm staining my clothes.
The girl, sturdy in her stance, fights a man off and manages to steal his sword before continuing in the battle.
I'm making my way back to help some of the other men, but then someone calls out to me.
"Ro!" the girl yells to me, just as someone tries to come up on me from behind.
I'm quick to duck and swat him over the edge of the boat and into the water below.
And with some sort of tranquillity, all the sounds from the fight dissipate into silence. No clashing of metal or screams from the crew, just an overwhelming sense of calmness.
"Is it over?" I ask to anyone left who would answer my question.
The large ship beside us casts a shadow from its sails as they flap in the wind.
"Keep your guard up," a crew member says as he doesn't take his gaze off the enemy ship.
I hear footsteps come down the stairs, closer to me.
The girl, the captain, she's got a hand holding the side of her torso.
I notice immediately, "You're bleeding."
Just as I get to her, she collapses to the ground, unable to keep herself up anymore. I have her lift up her hand to see her injury. It's deep and gushing blood.
"What do I do?" I ask her scared and not knowing what to do.
"Don't worry about it Ro," she says, "it's only a dream. I'll be fine."
I catch her eye and it settles me, "You called me Ro."
"I guess I did," she smiles.
I'm not sure how much time we have left, but there was only one thing I could reply, "What's your name? You haven't told me."
"Maybe I should keep you guessing," she smirks.
"Please," I tell her.
She breathes heavily, but still speaks, "Maybe tomorrow."
"What if this is it?" I question her. "What if we don't have a tomorrow?"
"I will see you tomorrow," she avoids my question. "I promise."
"Ok then," I nod.
I'm about to ask her to send me another message, but before I can, I'm plunged back into the darkness. Back to my tour bus.
