Chapter Thirty- Bellamy
"Are they watching again?" Pippa asked as soon as she saw him. They had met on the corner of the street that lead to the high street, Pippa having started walking to meet him in the park like she had done the night before.
"No, I'm in bed at my parents' house. They are still reviewing and trying to decide what to do with the footage they took from last night. This time, it's just us." He replied, smiling at the fact he could give her some good news.
Pippa sighed in relief before jumping forward, wrapping her arms tightly around his waist, her head leaning forwards to rest on his chest.
"Thank goodness. I'm so, so sorry that this is happening to you Bellamy." She mumbled into his pyjama top.
He was taken back by the sudden act of affection towards him. "It's fine. Pippa, really. It's fine." He stuttered, wrapping his own arms slowly around her body, hoping to keep her in her place for just a few more seconds. He closed his eyes memorizing the way she felt pressed against him, the way her skin felt underneath her fingertips.
Because if what the documents said were true, then he would not fall asleep and wake to see her. She would be gone, and he would be alone.
"But it's awful, what they are doing to you, and it's because of me. I have no repercussions, but you... your life is changing and it's in a way that is not good for you." She leaned backwards, Bellamy instinctively pulling her closer to him.
"My life is dull, since you came into it I have something to look forward to. The changes aren't too much." He replied, trying to comfort her.
"Bellamy, you can't honestly say that you're ok with the way you're being treated!" She asked, her eyes wide and searching.
He smiled down at her, her blue eyes capturing his own, drowning in worry and sadness.
"My parents have moved me out of my smart space, smaller than your bedroom and are forcing me to move to one with a bed that is permanently in place, and a kitchen area with a table that is always in place. There will be a living room with a window big enough for me to look out of when I am sat on a chair that doesn't retract to the floor." He explained, not letting on to her that, in fact, his little place was just the right size for him- and him, alone.
"That can't just be it, you've told me about the deal you made with your mother- all the consequences." Pippa replied softly, leaning back into his chest.
He prayed that she would not be able to hear his heart thudding in his chest as she leaned against him.
"My father's campaign is still on going, though he has already practically secured his position in the office. This is the show part, for the public. They think having me out there will help- I'm a mystery, I hardly ever go to the community rooms."
Her musical laugh lifted his spirits, she was no longer sad about it, though he failed to find what was funny about what he said.
"What?" He asked, looking down at her, aware of her breath on his cheeks, how close her lips were to his.
"You're mysterious, Bellamy Jezebel. To the people you live next to every day and to me." She replied, confusing him even further.
"I'm mysterious to you?" He said. "You know you can ask me anything, I will answer it. I don't want to be a mystery- not to you." He held her gaze, knowing she had understood when a small smile tugged at the corners of her lips.
"I know, I like that you don't mind all the questions. You know, being mysterious is sometimes thought of as a good thing..." She giggled, pulling away from him.
He was momentarily stunned by the sound that came from her lips, and the sudden absence of her from his arms. But the warmth he felt from her hand encasing his quickly chased the confusion away.
"What are we going to do today?" He asked, as she lead him towards town.
"I am going to take you on an adventure!" She said, walking towards a car parked on the road.
"An adventure?"
"Yes, we are going to explore! Take your mind off of everything and see a new, beautiful part of the country." She replied, smashing jimmying open the front door of the house the car was parked in front of.
He watched, bemused as she slipped through the front door and appeared a few seconds later with a set of keys in her hand.
"So predictable." She said, showing him the keys before unlocking the car doors. "Well, get in!"
He tentatively sat in the car, watching as she started the car and buckled her seat belt. He copied her, sitting back in his chair, feeling trepidation at the 'adventure' that they had begun.
Gripping the seat with one hand and the handle on the door with the other, he held his breath as the engine below him thrummed to life. Pippa maneuvering a stick in between them and turning the wheel, sending the car racing forwards.
"Woah!" He cried out, his hands flying out in front of him.
Pippa only laughed in reply, only when she glanced over to look at him did she apologize.
"Sorry." Her grin was sheepish as she looked at him again. He was sure that his face was a picture of sheer horror and surprise as the world around him began to race past the window.
He only nodded in reply, his hands returning to clutch at the chair and door handle.
He eventually lost himself to the world outside, Pippa switching on something in front of them that made music blast out from speakers that surrounded them.
The town quickly flashed by, being replaced by green fields and trees as far as the eye could see.
He spotted the odd sign, but they were traveling too fast for him to read them properly.
"So where are we going exactly?" He asked, tearing his eyes away from the window to watch Pippa, sitting at ease, her hands on the wheel in front of her.
"Nope, I'm not telling you!" She replied.
"Well, can you tell me how long until we get there?" He did not relish the prospect of spending much longer in this self-driven car.
Pippa chuckled, sensing his unease. "Not much longer, I promise. Just sit back and relax. Listen to the music and enjoy the view."
The car sped up, shifting under him as the view he was supposed to be enjoying flashed across the window. But he did as he was told, and sat back. Instead looking over to his travelling companion, looking over to her as he listened to the music.
With the sun shining in the perfectly blue sky, he watched her. The curve of her nose, the small pout of her lips. The he slender fingers brushed her hair out of her eyes, and hooked it behind her ears. She was natural, no trace of enhancement. He loved that. She wasn't trying to be someone else. It was refreshing in the constantly changing society he lived in.
"Hey, dreamer."
Pippa's voice dragged him out of his day dreaming.
He snapped his head towards the front window, his heart racing at the realization he had been caught staring.
"Yeah?" He asked, coughing to clear his throat.
"Know where we are yet?" She said, nodding towards a sign up ahead, slowing the car down so he could actually read it this time.
The fields and trees had been replaced by tall old buildings, how long ago he could not be sure.
WELCOME TO YORK
The sign was large and surrounded by bright flowers, but they weren't what took his breath away.
"York?" He asked, almost breathless.
"Yep!" She replied.
"The actual ancient city?" He said again, craning his neck to look up at the old buildings as they drove past.
Pippa laughed again. She had been laughing and smiling a lot in their dream time together this night. Though he was not complaining. Quite the opposite.
"Well, yes, in a way I suppose. But this is York in my time." She explained.
He nodded, remembering that of course the city would have evolved with time. He recalled the old drawings and information on the city that he had come across in his file.
"We can walk around the city, so you can see what it's all like. Then we can go to some museums and there is an amazing Art gallery, some really old buildings as well." She said, pulling up the car in the middle of, what looked like, quite a modern street.
He looked over to her confused. Where were the ancient buildings?
"You're still in your sleeping clothes, Bellamy. We're going shopping!" She switched off the engine and got out, he quickly followed suit.
He let her drag him around the shops, getting changed as he went, leaving his sleeping clothes on the floor behind him. He was caught by surprise as she slipped behind a clothes rail and her top ended up on the floor as well.
Spinning around quickly he looked away. She was getting changed. It would be so wrong to watch. He glimpsed a mirror on a wall in front of him, taking all of his inner strength not to watch.
He hadn't realized how close he was getting to her. How much he wanted to be around her. He missed her when he was awake. His sudden realization of his feelings towards her took him by surprise. He had objected on every level to the idea of marriage, especially now his mother was forcing it on him. But if Pippa was there. If she was alive in his time.
It occurred to him, with a sinking feeling as she appeared from behind the railing all colorful and vibrant, that if she was in fact born in his time, then the society would have sucked all the happiness out of her. Made her conform.
He was jealous of her freedom.
"Ready?"
She was dressed in a bright yellow dress, that puffed out at her waist and a cropped leather jacket. Sparkly blue sunglasses sat on top of her head.
Sturdy black looking boots completed her look. He smiled at her ensemble, so odd yet so complete.
"Hey! Don't smirk at me! Have you not realized what you're wearing yet?" He hadn't realized he had been smirking, he hadn't mean to. Add her words he glanced down at the clothes she had picked out for him.
Checkered red trousers, a white shirt and dark purple jumper.
He stared down in stunned silence. How did he not realize what she had given him to wear? He glanced up to find her grinning again.
"Come on! Places to see!" She grabbed his hand and pulled him towards the door.
"There is no one here to see you. Chill." She said, nudging him.
Was his uncomfortableness that obvious?
"I'm chill." He said, picking up some bright orange sunglasses from a stand as they walked past the door. "Let's go see some places." It wasn't the clothes. He loved them. They were her. They were freedom.
They walked around the museums, and art galleries, her dragging him along as he stopped to look at every piece of art and historical object. They walked down narrow streets and up to the biggest and oldest building he had ever seen. Though that wasn't a surprise. He hadn't actually seen that many.
"York Minster. It's beautiful isn't it." Pippa said pulling him towards a set of large wooden double doors. They creaked as they opened, his breath catching in his throat. It was beyond anything he could have ever imagined.
The ceiling was so tall he had to crane his neck in order to take anything in, he turned slowly in a circle his eyes darting from one thing to another in fear of not being able to see everything. Walking through the building before coming to a stop beneath the largest, most colourful window he had ever seen. Turning, he looked around to see where Pippa was, embarrassed by his prolonged awe at the inside of a building. He watched as she slid her leather jacket from her shoulders, laying it on a chair before walking slowly down the aisle towards him.
She was smiling softly, her steps light as they stood together, their eyes not leaving each other's.
He was going to tell her. The decision came to him with clarity. He was going to tell her everything. About the forced marriage, about the serious repercussions of digging up her letter. The secrets eating him up inside, it was unfair to keep them from her.
And then she smiled. The sun shining through the windows from the ceiling casting an ethereal glow over her. Her eyes shining with pure happiness. Happiness that he was responsible for.
If keeping these secrets to himself made sure that happiness stayed, then that is what he would do.
As quickly as his mind had been made up, he had unmade it again.
Her soft touch broke his stream of thoughts. Her fingertips stroking away his frown lines.
"What are you thinking about so hard?" She whispered.
"Nothing. Just how beautiful this place is, how amazing this day has been. How incredible you are."
"That's a lot for nothing." She replied.
He only smiled back in reply, not knowing what to say.
"You're keeping something from me, Bellamy." She said, turning away from him.
There was nothing he wanted more than to tell her everything, the whole truth. Have her look at him again with happiness in her eyes.
"You promised me no secrets." She walked back down the aisle, slipping on her leather jacket before walking towards the door. Away from him.
He ran towards her, taking her hand as they passed through the doors.
"I'm sorry. I will tell you everything. Once I know what's going on for certain, once I have all the facts. I promise." He replied. He could give her that.
Because telling her his mother told him that she was going to die in a few days wasn't something you could spring on someone.
"Ok." She replied, smiling sadly. Nodding with resignation.
As they wandered around the minster, a light breeze picked up as they settled in a small park at the back. Laying side by side as the drowsiness as settled over them as their dream time together came to a close.
Are you crying? Pippa asked, shocked. Sitting up to wipe a drop of water from his cheek.
"No?" He replied, touching his cheek.
And then he felt it. Another drop of water hitting his cheek again. Pippa watched in surprise as more droplets fell from the sky.
"It's raining." He whispered in awe as the rain began to fall heavier. He had never felt the rain before.
"It's never rained before." She said nervously, looking up to the sky while laying back down onto the now damp grass.
He didn't notice her voice wobble with nerves, only the feeling of cold water hitting his skin as he slipped out of the dream and the sinking feeling knowing that soon he would be waking up to face another day.
