Chapter Seven- Pippa
He was real.
He thought that she was a figment of his imagination.
He was following her into town.
He was shirtless.
Pippa nervously bit at her lip. She had only ever talked to Simon and Finchy boy wise, but she had grown up with them so that didn’t really count. Nor did this one if he was actually a figment of her imagination, but something told her that he wasn’t.
“Where are you from Bellamy, you know, when you’re awake?” She asked him the first thing she could think of that didn’t sound completely dumb.
“Londinium” He said after a moment.
Londinium? Wasn’t that what London was called in Roman times?
“You don’t look like a Roman” she laughed
“What do you mean?” he asked confused.
“Because London hasn’t been called Londinium for about a thousand years” she explained.
“Oh.” He muttered. “What year is it?” he asked as they entered the town centre.
She raised her eye brows at him. “2016, why? What year are you from?”
He stopped suddenly behind her, turning to face him she saw his face turn ashen.
“What’s wrong?” she asked him. What had she said? She was terrible at talking to guys. God she was so stupid.
“2016” He said slowly.
“Yes, I think I know what year it is” she laughed nervously.
“I’m in the year 3409” he said quietly, watching for her reaction.
What. The. Fudge.
3409? She was insane. She was definitely going insane.
“Come with me.” She said leading him into the coffee shop, he followed unquestioningly behind her. “Do you want a Coffee, or a cup of tea?” she asked him as she tried to figure out what was happening to her. Tea always made confusing situations better, and if if it couldn't, it always made you feel better. It's an English thing.
“Umm. I guess a coffee would be nice.” He replied, taking a seat at the table she had pointed to.
She walked behind the counter and made herself a cup of tea and poured him out a cup of coffee, they sat in silence, watching each other nervously.
“So” She started.
“So?” he asked
“This is my dream. You, Bellamy, are in my dream. It is the year 2016. My name is Pippa White, I am 19 years old and have lived in this town all my life. When I go to sleep I wake up here, that’s the way it’s always been. Its real, it’s all real. I don’t know how but it is.” She rambled, hoping she had covered everything that needed to be said.
“This is crazy.” Bellamy ran his hand through his hair, making it stick out in different directions. “You are in my dream, you have to be. My names Bellamy Jezebel I’m 21 years old and I live in Londinium. It is the year 3409. I looked at this town while I was changing old data to fit our latest technology and I’m dreaming about it. So it can’t be real. It just can’t, it’s impossible.” He stared down at his coffee cup, deep in thought.
“It feels real though right? The coffee? The chairs, table? Me?” she replied softly.
“Yeah. It does.” He whispered. They sat in silence for a few minutes, digesting what the other person had said.
“Great. Now we’ve opened a dialogue, and finished our drinks, let’s go find you a change of clothes.” She smiled, hoping he’d stared to believe that she was actually real.
“Oh. Yeah, clothing would be good. Thanks.” He nodded.
They walked to the boutique store, passing the women’s clothing in the front to the men’s in the back. He gasped as she started pulling clothing off of the racks.
“What do you like to wear?” she asked him pointing to the jeans and trousers section.
He just stood there staring.
“You do wear clothes in the future right?” she joked holding up a pair of jeans to his waist to check his size. Handing him the right size she moved on to t-shirts.
“No, not like this. We wear colour coded jumpsuits.” He whispered, taking the green t-shirt she had in her hands.
“That’s nice” she said, not able to think of anything else to say about the matter. Colour coded jumpsuits? How…. Utilitarian.
“You can change behind that curtain.” She pointed to the changing room behind them.
He nodded “So, you wake up here in whatever clothing you fell asleep in?” he asked from behind the curtain.
“Yeah, I wake up here in my bed, so I get changed before I leave the house. Where did you wake up?”
“A small park on the other side of the town.” He walked out and Pippa had to clamp her teeth together to stop her jaw from hitting the floor.
The clothes were perfect for him. He looked like a God. A fudging God.
Get. A. Grip. It’s not as if he’s actually here in real life, when we both wake up we can’t go and find each other without the need for the Tardis. She mentally scolded herself.
“Is it alright?” he looked down at himself worried “Am I wearing them wrong?”
“No you look great.” She smiled “Shoes.” She said grabbing a few pairs of slip on’s in different sizes “Here, see what size you are.”
“These feel good.” He said once he put on the first pair.
“Great, let’s go” she lead him out of the shop and onto the roundabout where there was a clear view of the whole town centre.
“It’s beautiful here.” He said, sitting on the stone steps of the war memorial.
“Yeah, it really is.” She sighed “I prefer my dream version of it, no people telling me what I should or shouldn’t be doing.” She smiled
“That sounds nice.” He murmured.
“Well, you’re here too now, you can do what you want.” She sat down next to him.
“Tell me about it. The town, the year 2016. I want to know everything.” His eyes grew animated and alive.
“Ok, how about we do a question for a question? I want to know about the future.”
He nodded in agreement. “That sounds good.” He paused as he thought about what he wanted to ask her first. His face pensive and unreadable. He was very handsome. His strong jaw line and short brown hair framing his face perfectly.
“What do you do every day?” He asked after a moment’s thought.
The question took her a little off guard, what does she do? She was expecting questions on politics or technology, history even.
“Not a lot, it's the summer holiday at the moment- two months off of school before we move up to the next level of education or leave to get a job.” She explained after he gave her a blank look.
“I'm starting university in 3 weeks, it will be the first time I have left home so I'm pretty nervous, but the first week is just like a big party.” She started to babble stopping herself before she went on to much.
“So at the moment I just walk around, go to the library, the park or maybe stay at home and watch T.V. When my friend Fletch comes home from his dads we go the cinema- that's fun.”
“You are continuing your education?” He asked bewildered “What job are you going to be enrolled into?”
“Enrolled?” She laughed “I have no clue what I want to do, I'm studying history so maybe I'll work in a museum or something.”
He gaped at her “you don't know!?” He shook his head “we have to decide when we are 14 what sector we want to go into, I was given a choice between medical and technology. I chose technology.” He added at the end.
“14!” Pippa exclaimed “are you all Genius’s or something?”
“We are schooled from the age of 5, with a weekend off a month to visit family until we are 14 and then we go into specialist schools until we are 16 then we get a primary job in the chosen sector and we work up to the top- if we want to.” He explained.
“It sounds very- efficient.” Pippa replied. No family life? Boarding school for 11 years, being told what area you have to work in. It all sounded very controlled.
“It is.” He nodded “the system works, but it is very dull and there is no real creativity. Nothing of worth has been invented for over 200 years.” He sighed. “The inside of houses, what are they like?” He said quickly, changing the topic.
“The inside of houses? What do you live in?” She asked shocked – surely they still had houses in the future!
