Chapter One- Pippa White
Dreaming. Pippa had it down to a fine art. Unlike everyone else she had ever talked to about it, her dreams were not filled with an unexplainable carrot craving, the need to jump from a building or the inability to run. There were no inner thoughts that needed to be worked out during her REM time. In her dream she was perfectly at peace.
Always had been.
Since she could remember she would fall asleep as soon as her head touched the pillow and wake up here. Her world, her sanctuary. If she hadn't known for a fact that she was indeed sleeping she would have sworn that her world was real. The ghost town replica of her own would greet her every evening with warm welcoming arms and she would climb out of the bed she had just laid down on and start her night- or day- in her world.
She would start by taking a book from the shelf next to her bed and walking somewhere to read for a few hours, sometimes it would be Mrs. Caulsons garden, with the flowers and empty fishpond.
Other times it would be the park with the tennis courses and empty duck pond, but most of the time it was the church yard, under the willow tree that never failed to sway in the warm breeze that constantly swept through her world. No rain, no snow, no stifling heat or cloudy skies.
It was perfect and it was hers.
When she grew hungry she would meander her way through the small town to the bakers, with its never ending supply of all her favourite food. Often she would choose a ham sandwich followed by a chocolate and raspberry cupcake, but when she was feeling particularly naughty she would eat the cupcake first and then perhaps a lemon tart or chocolate éclair.
It didn't matter what or how much she ate, she never felt sick or grew fat. When she woke up it wasn't like she'd eaten it all for real anyway.
She would spend her remaining hours flitting in and out of the shops, trying on the latest collection of clothes from the boutiques or reading the new magazines from the newsagents.
In her waking hours her mother often took her into town and needless to say she grew suspicious when Pippa would always walk in and ask for an item that had only just arrived in the back room the day before- of course the answer of 'I tried it on last night in my dream' would not go down well with anyone. But she didn't have to explain anything in this world, there was no one to explain it to.
There was not one other living soul, human or creature. She always grew sad as her day drew to a close, knowing she would have to return to the land of chaos, where everyone thought their opinion should be followed and those who thought differently were persecuted by the flock of sheep that was modern day society.
After returning to her bedroom and replacing her book into its rightful place, she would lay down and fall asleep, only to wake up in reality refreshed after a long nights sleep, ready to start the day.
