Chapter Four- Bellamy

The shrill of the morning alarm roused Bellamy from his sleep. Rolling over he swiped his hand in front of G.I.L.E.S (gesture and Iris living everyday system) stopping the alarm. He scrunched his eye, trying to remember as much of his dream as possible. Not much had happened, he had just walked around an old city from one of the holographic textbooks he had found the day before.

He stood and stretched his fingers brushing the ceiling with his fingertips. The sterile white of the small box room he called home lit up as G.I.L.E.S recognised his presence in the room. Waving open the only window he stared out watching the morning stream of workers head to their designated stations for the day.

The Green uniforms of the medical staff all converged into the trains heading north, towards the hospital.

The Blue uniforms of the technicians all headed south to the vaults that stored the life system of the city.

Red uniforms of service workers were scattered throughout the crowds, heading towards the shops and food outlets- Or for the people rich enough to afford staff, the service workers would be heading towards the east side of the city, where government buildings stood tall and the housing consisted of much more than a measly white box room.

The Black uniforms of the guards patrolling the pathways were scarce, but that was because for every guard on the street there were 4 more in the tunnels beneath the streets. If a hint of disorder was ever felt you could be rest assured that security would always be there. Ready. Waiting.

There was the occasional flash of brown, the farmers, but they would just be elected representatives coming to talk to the government for whatever reason. The farmers hardly ever ventured into the cities centre.

The white uniforms of the Government workers stood out the most, due to the path people would make to let them through. A sign of respect no matter what level they were. No one wanted to offend whoever was in charge, or could be in charge.

Bellamy was a blue. He would spend every day in the vaults. Reprogramming the technology from the past that had yet to be uploaded to the server. The hologram room, where he would watch history that no one had heard of or read books no one had seen or films no one had watched in living memory except him.

Of course this meant that he had one of the highest levels of security in the building, the government had handpicked him for the job- his level of intelligence was above average and he showed a good understanding of the advanced technology required to decode the ancient technology.

With the new position comes a room at the top of the only tower dedicated to the technology sector, and a PA to organise his work schedule.

Although he had been flattered at the Governments assessment of him and the promotion that had come along with it- exceptionally rare at his tender age of 21- he held no pretences about why he was really picked for the job.

His father was a leading government official, thought to be a possible contender as the next President and his mother was the hospitals leading Doctor. High expectations and secrecy had always been a part of his life. It was coming up to a year now since the promotion and his 22nd birthday was looming ever closer.

The gentle hum of his bed retracting into the wall and the 'ding' from the kitchen brought him out of his daydream. Taking his coffee out of the hatch and pressing in his order for breakfast he sipped slowly careful not to scold himself. The 'ding' only a minute later signalled his scrambled eggs were ready.

"Giles, table out and today's report please" he said making his way over to the window were a table and chair for one rose out from the floor.

"Today is Thursday September 3rd. The time is 7:37. You have one message from your mother." The autonomic voice said before playing the message.

'Hello Bellamy, please come for dinner next Saturday- we are hosting your father's campaign dinner. And would also like to celebrate your birthday. Wear your formals.'

"No more messages" Giles said before clicking off.

Bellamy groaned. Campaign dinners were awful. Usually they consisted of the leading families in the city that supported his father but as he passed his 18th birthday his mother always found a way of inviting the families that had daughters.

Though he protested, his mother made it quite clear that unless he started going to the community rooms to meet people his age she would continue to invite them. Even though he made it very clear he wasn't interested they made it very clear that they were. And he really didn't like it. He was therefore glad that his mother had joined both the dinner and his birthday into one event rather than two. Every year since his 18th birthday he had been one of the most eligible bachelors in the city and he was slowly rising up the list as each birthday passed.

His wardrobe door slid open telling him it was time to get ready for work. Shrugging out of his sleeping trousers and sending them down the laundry shoot he zipped himself into his Blue work clothes.

"Giles, call Mother." He said out loud.

"No one is home Sir would you like to leave a message?"

"Yes, thank you Giles."

"Leave a message now Sir"

"Hello Mother, Father. I have just received your message, of course I will attend the dinner. I Hope you are both well, see you soon. End message"

"Message ended. Your Car has arrived sir."

"Thank you Giles. Open door" Slipping into his boots and fastening his watch around his wrist he put his coffee cup and plate back into the kitchen before walking the six steps to the door.

It opened, revealing a sterile hallway with a hundred other doors like his. The sound of his footsteps echoed off of the walls as he made his way to the car. It was waiting ready, his name flashing across the window, at the end of the hallway.

Climbing in he scanned his Iris for verification before the door closed shut and he was sent shooting down from the high-rise to the streets, joining the hydropowered lines the trains and other cars ran on.

He was relieved to find that not only with a vast pay rise his promotion also provided a private car to and from work, he had hated taking the trains, though he wore a blue uniform it did not take long for people to realise who he was and he would begin to be treated differently.

Men who didn't agree with his father would scowl and try to pick fights, Women would try and press their daughters on him and children would bug him about when the next ancient game that would be coming out.

Needless to say the car had been a welcome addition. Though he was also expected to upgrade his living space a few more levels, he saw no need in that unnecessary expense.

He never entertained and he had all he needed. Perhaps one day when he did meet that person he wanted to marry and procreate with he would upgrade his home to a more socially acceptable level.

Until then he was content with his life, his job and the holograms that allowed him to explore history and then go home and dream.

"Good morning Bellamy, you've got a good lot of data from the ancient times you like today." Sadie said smiling, greeting him as he stepped out of his car.

Sadie had been his PA since he started and was the only woman whom he was not related to that he actually could call a friend.

"Thanks Sadie, I'll get started right away." He walked through the double door that lead into the holographic room and his office.

Loading the ancient data sticks he began the tedious task of changing the coding so it could be uploaded into today's data banks. The process usually took him hours, depending on how old and how much data could be retrieved.

After stopping for lunch he was finally able to bring the data to life. Stepping into the Holographic room it hummed into life. Inserting the newly revised data chip he watched as streets and houses, grass and trees, birds and people all flickered into life. Though everything was frozen in time he was able to walk the streets and stand next to people as thought they were actually in the room.

Thank God for Google street maps He murmured as he took in the old town that had appeared around him. The red brick buildings only two or three stories high were old, the architecture from around the 1700- 1800's but the car models indicated around 2010.

There was so much life, so much colour.

He liked this place. He could almost smell the cakes and bread coming out of the bakery and the fresh flowers from the florists. Both of these professions had disappeared over a hundred years ago, bread was made by machines and non- medical flowers were only grown and picked in small amounts, meaning only the very wealthy could afford them.

The building that caught his eye was a small shop, tattered furniture and old books were piled in the widow. It was everything that was missing from society today. Everything now was built to last hundreds of years and when something began to fail it was melted down and re purposed.

Back then things were made and when it started to fail it only added to their charm. He stood next to a young girl who too was looking at the shop window, her face was blurry- the cameras not able to catch what they couldn't see.

He could tell she was very pretty, her long wavy blonde hair flowed around her shoulders and down her back, her pale skin glowing against her light yellow sundress. Blonde hair and pale skin had disappeared from the genetic structure of humanity over 500 years ago. Seeing it now on a young girl brought a small smile to his lips.

He wondered what people would make of her if she was to suddenly appear in the city. Would people agree with him that she was beautiful or would they think her strange and odd. She looked around 13 years old and yet she was looking into the window of an antique shop.

He frowned.

Weren't teenagers supposed to be inside their homes in front of Televisions and computers? She must not conform to social standards, he thought taking in his surroundings again before he moved on to explore the rest of the town.

Oh how he wished he could disappear through an alley way or into a house. But the cameras only stuck to the roads, so that meant he had to stick to them too.

After exploring for the rest of the afternoon he powered down the holograph and after taking out the data chip added it to the government's data bank. It would be checked by an official before being released to the general public- not that they took much interest in data like this.

Upon walking out of his office he was greeted by the sight of a very leggy woman leaning over Sadie's absent desk. Her blue uniform extra tight around her body, hugging every curve to perfection. Her olive skin and dark chocolate brown locks wrapped in an intricate knot on top of her head. She was beautiful but boy did she know it.

"May I help you?" He asked quirking an eyebrow and smirking as the woman spun round in surprise, her eyes widening as she realised who he was.

"Oh! Hello Sir, no I'm fine thank you, I was just waiting for Miss Write to return to her desk. You have such a lovely department" she smiled seductively and he had had to fight the urge to roll his eyes.

Every department was the same on every floor looks wise. He was sure it wasn't the department that she found lovely to look at.

"It's the same on every floor" He replied dryly walking over to the Car station next to the window, pressing the button to call an available one up to the floor. "Why don't you take a seat instead of snooping around Miss Write's desk?"

He didn't let her reply, instead he stepped into the pod, shutting its door quickly to escape the woman who had decided to sidle up to him instead of the chairs he pointed out.

He scanned his Iris and asked for Home, enjoying the soft and peaceful journey back to his living space.

He briefly closed his eyes, the flash of the town he had just been walking through invading his mind.

Sighing with content he knew what he would be dreaming of that night.
