chapter four, the girl medic
She didn't have the good of a nights sleep last night. It was plagued with nightmares. The nightmare she had was of her being stuck in the maze the whole night and this creature, who she assumes is what the boys call a Griever, stings her and she doesn't make it out alive.
She remembers waking up in the middle of the night to Gally shaking her awake. He told her he heard her screaming that woke him up and she apologized for waking him up. He repeatedly told her it was fine and asked if things were okay.
She opened up to him and told him about the nightmare. The last thing she remembers before falling asleep was Gally wrapping his arm around her in a comforting almost protective way.
The next day she was awakened by Alby and she would've screamed if it wasn't for him covering her mouth. " Ssh." he said and puts his finger up to his lips. She slowly nods and he takes his hand off of her mouth.
He nods his head in a direction. " Follow me, She-Bean."
Ria watches as Alby starts walking off and she looks over at some of the Gladers that were near her seeing they were still asleep and she wondered how early it was. She notices that Gally wasn't besides her and saw that he was back in his hammock and she wonders how long he had been laying with her. She got up from the hammock anyways and followed Alby.
" You guys have a nice place here." she spoke up and he smiled. " Yeah, we're lucky. I know it's hard to believe but it wasn't always this way."
" We had dark days. We lost a lot of boys to fear. To panic." he looks over at her. " We've come far since then."
Ria tilts her head to the side. " This is nice and all that you're telling me this, but why are you?"
" You're the only girl we've ever had here in the Glade. You're different yet the same. You came up in the Box just like we did with no memory and you deserve to know about us and the Glade." Alby explains. She smiles and glances at the knife in his hand. " What's that for? Or do I even wanna know?"
He chuckles and walks over to the wall where names we're carved onto it. " You're one of us now, " he hands her the knife and points to the wall. Ria looks over at the wall, looking at all of the names that were carved onto it and she noticed some of them were crossed out. " Why are they crossed out?" she questions as he glances at Alby.
" Those are the ones that aren't with us now. Dark days." he answers her. She slowly nods and raises the hand she held he knife in to the wall and carves her name right below Newt's name.
The day goes on and they have her try out each of the jobs so they can find out which would be a perfect fit for her. She looks over at the door of the med hut she was currently in seeing one of the boys she recognized was Winston, the Keeper of the Slicers.
She smiles. " Hey, Winston. What's up?"
Winston smiled sheepishly. " Got hurt." he said and Ria walks over to take a look at the large scratch on his arm. " It doesn't look too deep so you should be fine." she picks up some of the wrap they used and wraps it around his arm. " Keep that around your arm to not get it infected and it should heal over time."
He nods. " Thanks, Ria."
Ria smiles and sets the rest of the wrap back down on the table. " No problem. Be more careful out there, Winston." he chuckles. " No promises." he waves at her before walking out of the hut as Jeff walks in with a smile. " I think you should be a medic."
Ria raises an eyebrow and crosses her arms. " You think I should be a medic just because I wrapped Winston's arm up?" he shakes his head. " No, not just because of that. You're good around them. You're caring and helpful with others. You would be a good medic. Besides, we probably need another one." Jeff says with a shrug of his shoulders.
Ria tilts her head to the side as she pretends to be thinking. " I guess you are right."
" What are you two yapping about?" a voice asks and they turn around seeing it was Gally. Jeff smiles and throws his arm around Ria. " Ria's gonna be a medic."
Gally looks over at Ria seeing if he was right and Ria nods. He smiles. " Well, I'm glad you found your place. You're gonna be a great medic."
Ria smiles shyly. " Thanks, Gally." he nods.
The two of them continue to stare at each other and have seem to forgot that Jeff was in the room. He clears his throat and takes his arm off of Ria. Gally blinks out of his daze and rubs the back of his neck. " Right, well. I should get back to work."
Ria's ears we're tinted pink, she was for sure about that, her whole face was probably pink from embarrassment as well.
She nods. " Okay, be careful." she watches as Gally walks out of the hut. " That was awful to watch." Jeff spoke up and she looks at him. " What are you talking about?"
Jeff rolls his eyes and gesture to her and to where Gally was moments ago. " You and Gally? It's obvious you two have a thing for each other."
Ria scoffs and avoids eye contact with him. " What? Pff, no! No, we don't. We're just good friends."
Jeff smirks. " Good friends who like each other." she glares at him and shoves him gently. " Shut up, Shank."
He grins. " You're finally using our words! Good job, She-Bean!" she rolls her eyes although there was a hint of a smile on her lips.
