Chapter 31
"Nora," Kaden cried. He cradled her head in his lap and carressed her stained cheek with the pads of his fingers. "What did you do?"
It was then that Matanto approached them. "She killed herself," he laughed. "A mortal sin; she's earned herself a one-way ticket to hell as my guest."
Matanto reached forward to rip Nora's broken body from Kaden's arms but paused when Mesingw shouted from behind them. "Stop!"
Matanto whipped around to face his adversary with eyes blazing. "You dare command me?" He roared. "I will destroy you where you stand and drag you to hell as well, Mesingw, if you try to get in my way. You knew the deal. If she-"
Just then Ketanëtuwit appeared. Nora's owl was perched upon his shoulder. He hooted on behalf of his master, commanding their attention to him. All but Matanto bowed their heads in reverence and took a knee.
"There must be balance," Ketanëtuwit whispered firmly. "You interfered at the nature center when you broke the shield of the Wemategunis, Matanto."
"That doesn't mean anything," Matanto hissed back venomously. "I barely did anything-"
"You aided the side of evil!" Ketanëtuwit replied. "And now, to restore the balance, I shall assist in the side of good."
Ketanëtuwit turned quietly and stretched out his arm. A ribbon of color shot from his fingers, wrapping themselves around Nora before racing up into the night sky. A dance of Aurora borealis took center stage briefly before burning itself out quickly, taking Ketanëtuwit away from the street with it.
Disgusted, Matanto disappeared as well, leaving behind a healed and breathing Aingeal Fola who'd been granted full-strength immortality a month early.
When she opened her eyes, Nora smiled lovingly up at her husband. "Kaden!" She said.
"I love you, Nora Blaze O'Malley," he replied.
"I love you, too, Kaden. I love you, too!"
