Chapter 18

"We'll be fine," Kaden repeated to his friend. "I won't let anything happen to her."

Kaden, Slate and Donovan were all standing together behind the school. They'd cut art class. They needed to go over the plan Kaden had set up for him and Nora to meet later that day.

Donovan was pacing like a caged animal. "I don't like it," he said for the fifth time in 10 minutes. "This is her last chance. If anything should happen to her? If they follow her to the nature center-"

"Nothing is going to happen, Donovan," Kaden groaned. "You've been cloaking her all this time."

"Yeah, and it'd been working for a while. But now they're here, and you want to meet with Nora alone. I won't be there to shield her aura. You've already exposed her scars. She's vulnerable. This is foolish."

Slate picked at his nails nervously. "Kaden, he has a point."

Aggravated, Kaden thrashed around in the baren ball field and kicked the orange-tinged sand beneath his feet. "No, he doesn't, Slate. Talks-with-the-Forrest will be with us. You know we'll be safe."

"But what if-" Donovan started up again.

"No," Kaden replied. "The Wemategunis has very strong powers. You know this, too  Donovan."

"Still, I'd feel better if-"

"I said, no," Kaden reiterated. "She's your kin. I get it, but she's my wife. You trust your Celtic ways. I understand. But you know our spirits are just as powerful as yours."

Helplessly turning around in place, Donovan brought his arms up over his shoulders and leaned his head back onto them. "This is on you if anything goes sideways, Kaden. I can't breech the boundaries of that area once your friend takes you inside."

"If you can't get in, neither can they, Donovan," Slate sighed with resignation. "Don't worry. His plan will work." Slate placed a reassuring hand on Donovan's shoulder and nodded at Kaden supportively.

If only they'd known what Drexel was planning. They might have prevented the catastrophe that would later befall them all.
