Chapter 10
Walking into Chemistry lab felt like winning the lottery to Nora. She was enamoured by her arm candy's charm and his good looks.
Not even the sight of 100's of soldier-straight test tube rows, nor the smell of too many used-up white board markers (Just how much did their professor think they could write in one small lab book?!?) could bring Nora down.
There was something sexy with the way Donovan carried himself. His swagger was full of confidence and hot, yummy sex appeal. The contrast of his coloring only enhanced his personality. His light skin, those penetrating eyes and that full head of brown hair made Nora's mouth tilt off kilter with giddiness like the young school girl that she was. Albiet one who was soon to graduate and turn 18, but yes, giddy all the same.
This is why, as taken as she was with Donovan at the start of Chemistry lab, Nora couldn't help feel like she'd been dumped out of a moving car and had landed face first in a pile of 'what the heck just happened?' a few minutes later.
Not half-way into bases, acids and beakers, Nora looked over at her lab partner to find him snoring. Barely able to stay upright on the bent, metal stool, a smidgen of drool was leaking out of the corner of Donovan's mouth and onto his 2006 recycled copy of 'Chemistry Today' text. Nora wasn't sure what was worse; the ancient text that they were still using at this school or the fact that Donovan'd fallen asleep on her.
At first, Nora thought he was teasing. That at any minute she'd turn her head and he'd pop out of his seat to tickle her, poke her side, or pull on her hair.
Something.
Anything.
But, nope.
Nothing.
Donovan was out like a light, snoozing the class away. Strangely, Dr. Simmons didn't even bat an eye at Donovan's lack of participation. She breezed through the lesson, almost high from all the notes she kept writing with her markers, as if Donovan wasn't even there.
Nora couldn't understand what'd happened. One minute she and Donovan had been laughing and enjoying each other's company, and the next, Donovan'd dropped off like a stone.
It was almost insulting, really. Was she that dull? Not even when Nora shrieked as her baking powder mixture exploded across their table did Donovan stir.
Aa she cleaned up her foamy mess with a battered, red handcloth, Nora started to rethink their little date to Alex's after school. She didn't want her classmates to see her out with a guy who would fall asleep at the table on her.
She'd be mortified.
When the end of period bell rang, Sleeping Beauty woke up. Nora gently cancelled their pizza date, telling Donovan she now had lab work to do and couldn't make it.
To her dismay, her decline rolled off Donovan's shoulders with an uncaring shrug that stung like a papercut. Not deep, but enough to sting.
"Ok," Donovan said, leaving lab with Nora while holding the door open. "No big deal. Come on, let's get to our next class."
This time, as they left Chemistry together, Donovan made no attempt to put his arm around Nora's shoulders.
Nora frowned.
This guy was like zero to 60 and back down again in two seconds flat.
