Terminology:

Airship: An aircraft that flies using lighter-than-air gas held in a balloon-like structure. Blimps and Zeppelins are common examples

Ballast Tank: A compartment in the bottom of an airship that can be filled with water to provide stability and weight when docked

Ballonet: A bag of normal air protruding into the envelope of a nonrigid or semirigid airship. It can be inflated or deflated to control the airship's lift by changing the pressure of the lifting gas

Barasingha: A species of deer

Bellows: A type of manually-powered air pump

Bow: The front of a ship

Cabin: An enclosed room on a ship. Most house some kind of living space, like bedrooms

Cabin Boy: A low-ranking, usually young male employee on a ship

Carrack: A type of ocean-going sailing ship

Deck: The flat "floor" or "ceiling" of a ship. The uppermost deck is open to the sky—unless there's an airship envelope above it!

Dhow: A type of small sailing ship used in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean region

Dock: A sturdy walkway extending into the water for ships to pull up next to when they reach land. Also a verb.

Gondola: The passenger compartment on or in the bottom of an airship

Grackle: A species of bird. Nosy and noisy!

Hatch: An opening in a wall or deck, usually to allow access to parts of the ship

Hull: The watertight outer body of a ship

Heading: The direction a ship is pointed in

Keel: A rigid structure running along the bottom of a ship—or the bottom of an airship's envelope to help distribute the weight of the gondola

Lateen Sail: A triangular sail that allows a ship to sail into the wind

Maharaja: An Indian prince

Manjira: A musical instrument consisting of a pair of bell-like cymbals

Mooring Mast: A tall pole that a docked airship gets tied to to keep it in place

To Moor (a ship): To secure a ship to land or an anchor by way of a rope

Port: A designated, usually coastal hub for ships (or airships) to come and dock, pick up or offload cargo, etc. Also a word for the left side of a ship (not used in this book)

Porthole: A small, round window often found in ships

Prow: The very front of the ship; the front of the bow

Quarterdeck: A raised deck at the back of a sailing ship

Rigging: The system of ropes supporting (and used to adjust) the sailing parts of a ship

Rudder: The steering apparatus of a ship. On an old-fashioned airship like Dreamcatcher, the rudder is a vertical sail at the rear of the ship. It is able to swing back and forth to catch the wind and turn the vessel

Spar: A pole mounted crosswise on a ship's mast to carry or support the sail

Starboard: The right side of a ship
