CHAPTER THREE
The next day Juliet is standing behind Janson in the cafeteria with the two men just like the night before as Janson lists off the names that was on his clipboard. She wonders if Thomas believed her and Aris. She really hoped he did, because she thinks with his help and maybe even if his friends help, they could escape this place.
" I wanna know what's through that door." Thomas said and his friends look at him.
" We've been over this," Newt shook his head. " You said they were covered up, so you don't know what they're called. It could've been anything under there. Maybe Juliet isn't telling the truth."
" I know she is." Thomas said as he looked at him.
" Well," Minho said. " I'm sold."
" Thank you for your attention. Enjoy the rest of your evening." Janson said as the two men start to lead the line of kids out of the cafeteria and Janson follows them. Juliet slows her pace whenever she saw Thomas walking over to the door. She stopped by the door, acting as if she was making sure the rest of the kids walked through as she watched what happened.
Her eyes grew wide when she realized he was trying to pretend he was one of the ones that got called, but one of the guard's that was by the door stopped him.
" Hey, you weren't called." one of the guard's said and the other guard that was there stepped forward.
Thomas looked behind them, locking eyes with Juliet and she knew that was his way of asking for her to help. She just sent him an apologetic smile and walk along with the other kids. She knew if she tried helping him, they would both get into trouble and as much as she wanted to help Thomas, she didn't want to get him or herself into trouble.
She furrowed her eyebrows together when she heard yelling from the cafeteria and she had a feeling it was Thomas. She watched as Janson left and walked back to the cafeteria and she followed him, wanting to know what was happening.
They got back to the cafeteria to see that now Thomas' friends were standing behind him as the two guards keep him from leaving.
Her eyes grow wide when one of the guard pushes Thomas back and Thomas went to lunge at him, but his friends pulled him back. It was obvious that Thomas was mad and she didn't blame him. She looked over, locking eyes with Thomas and she mouthed to him, 'calm down'. She was surprised that actually worked. His breathing slowed down to normal and once his friends knew that he wouldn't try to do anything they let go of him.
Janson pushes past the guards while Juliet stands behinds the guards, just in case if she was needed. " What's happening here?" Janson asked as he looked at the guards, Thomas and his group of friends.
" Thomas," Janson said as he looked at Thomas. " I thought we could trust each other." he reached forward and put a hand on Thomas' shoulder. " You know we're all on the same team here."
" Are we?" Thomas asked as Juliet watched quietly, wondering what was going to happen next.
Janson was quiet as he took his hand off of Thomas' shoulder and then tells the guards, " Get them to their bunks."
Juliet met up with Aris and they were now crawling in the vents again to go get Thomas and maybe his friends. " Hopefully they listen." Juliet mumbles.
" I think they will." Aris said as he looked back at her with a small smile.
They got to the vent that was in Thomas and his friends room and Aris opened the vent. He crawled out so he was just out from under the bed, but was still laying on the ground. " Hey, Thomas."
Juliet did the same, laying on her side as she looked up at Thomas. " You got it?"
Thomas nodded as he showed them the key card. " Yeah, let's go." he said while his friends look at them with shock and confusion.
" Wait a minute, is that the girl that works here?" Frypan asked as he pointed at Juliet.
Juliet looked at Thomas' friends, who all looked familiar to her for some reason. She waved at them with a small smile on her face. " Yeah, hi. I'm Juliet."
Juliet moved back into the vent with Aris when Thomas went to go under the bed. " You guys might be right, I might be paranoid, but I got to find out for sure." Thomas said as he looked at his friends who knelt around him. " Just cover for me."
****
Once the three of them got to where the door was Thomas was the first to drop down. Aris dropped down next and then Juliet dropped down. Aris closed the vent as she made sure that no one was walking by while Thomas got out the key card.
She looked back over at them. " Okay, we're clear."
Thomas nodded and walked towards the door, sliding the key card through and after a few seconds the door slid open. Juliet stands between Thomas and Aris as they look at the hallway in front of them. Thomas was the first to walk in and Juliet and Aris followed him.
Around them were a few lab coats and a window besides that showed them into the room. Juliet looked over and her eyes grew wide when she saw tubes that had what looked like brains in them. She was never allowed to go behind this door so she was curious as to what was in the room just like Aris and Thomas, but she had no idea this was going to be in the room.
The three of them walk to the door and it opened once they were in front of it. They walked into the room and they stare with wide eyes as they see multiple kids that were hung up with wires.
Thomas looked over at Juliet. " Did yo know about this?"
Juliet shook her head. " No." she replied as she looked around the room. " They never let me in this room and now I know why."
She frowns as she looks at the row of kids. " I can't believe they're doing this." she mumbles and she looks over whenever Thomas walked over to a girl with dark hair, fearing that it was Teresa.
She bit her lower lip, hoping for Thomas' sake that it wasn't Teresa as Thomas pushes the girl's hair back to reveal her face and Thomas let out a sigh of relief seeing that it wasn't Teresa.
Juliet walked over and stood beside Thomas on his right side while Aris on the left. Juliet looked over at Aris, seeing the look of terror on his face and she frowned when she realized who this girl was. Aris told her all about Rachel and from what he told her Rachel seemed like a nice girl that she wished she could have met.
" It's Rachel." Aris finally spoke as he stared at her with sad eyes. " They took her the first night. I told her it was going to be okay."
" Aris, I'm so sorry." Juliet apologized and he looked at her. " It's not your fault."
" I know, I just felt like I had to apologize." Juliet said quietly and then they looked over when they heard the sound of a door sliding open. The door that led to the room they were in started to open and the three of them quickly ran to the side.
Thomas hid behind the pillar that was in the front row while Aris hid behind some sort of oxygen tank and Juliet hid behind a pillar that was more in the back where Janson and another guy were walking to. They stopped in the middle of the room and Juliet peaked out a bit from the pillar, making sure that she wouldn't be seen as she sees that a screen had popped up and she was surprised to see Ava Paige.
" Good evening, Dr. Paige." Janson greets. " Good to see you again."
Ava looked up from the papers she was looking at that were on her desk and she didn't look that happy. " I wasn't expecting to hear from you so soon." Janson said.
" Change of plans, Janson." Ava said. " I'll be arriving a little sooner than expected. First thing tomorrow." she tells him as she stands up and walks around the desk, now standing in front of Janson.
" Oh, well, we will be delighted to have you." Janson said. " You will be pleased with the progress we made." he looked at the guy besides him who had a tablet with him and he touched the tablet and on the screen showed some results.
" As you can see these results have been extremely promising. Whatever it is you've been doing," Janson said as he nodded with a smile on his face " It's working."
Ava shakes her head. " Not well enough. I just received board approval. I want all remaining subjects sedated and prepped for harvest by the time I arrive." she said and it appeared Janson wasn't too happy about that.
" Dr. Paige, we are going as fast as we can." he tells her. " We are still running tests."
" Try something faster." Ava said as she looked at him. " Until I can guarantee their security this is the best plan."
" Security is my job. We're on twenty-four hour lockdown. I am assuring you that the assets are secured." Janson reassures her.
" Have you found the Right Arm?" Ava asked and Janson was quiet for a moment before he replied with, " Not yet. We tracked them as far as the mountains."
" So they are still out there? They already hit two of our installations." Ava told him while Thomas, Aris and Juliet share a look. " They want these kids as badly as we do."
" And I cannot..." Ava said as she stepped forward and she realized that she raised her voice so she quiets it down. " I cannot afford another loss. Not now when I am so close to a cure."
" If you are not up to the task I will find someone else who is." Ava walked back around her desk as Janson said. " That won't be necessary."
" Might I suggest that we start with the most recent arrivals?" Janson suggested and Juliet's eyes widened as she glanced over at Thomas with worry. If this was what they were going to do to Thomas and his friends, they needed to find a way out of this place right now.
" Just get it done." Ava said as she sat down in her chair. Janson was about to turn around, but Ava spoke again. " And make sure that Juliet isn't getting too close with Group A."
Juliet looked back at Ava with wide eyes when she heard her being talked about. " If she gets too close to them and spend a lot of time with them, it's possible she could remember." Remember what? Juliet furrowed her eyebrows, wondering what Ava was talking about.
She glanced over at Thomas and Aris seeing that they were already looking at her with confusion. Juliet wondered maybe that Ava meant that she could possibly remember her memory that was wiped. Her eyes grew wide when she realized that they were the people who wiped her memory, but it bothered her that she didn't know why.
" I also don't want them to feel any pain." Ava adds.
Janson nods. " They won't feel a thing."
