Chapter 27

Dani stood outside the hospital, her phone in her hand, "This isn't a prank call! I'm telling you my friend was kidnapped!"

"Ma'am, you're telling me you were on a bus and just so happened to see your friend get abducted by two other men?" the officer on the other line asked.

"Yes, that's what I'm saying! I gave you the description of the car and the license plate number."

"I checked the plate number but it doesn't exist. I'll tell you what, I'll have the officers that were called out the first time you called check it out."

After finally disconnecting her call, Dani's legs shook as she made her way into the hospital. Tristan had told her the floor and room so she went directly there, signing in at the nurse's station.

"I told you, I don't want anyone to know the bomb was planted by us. Especially not Dani," Jax's voice could be heard through the door of his hospital room. "Hopefully Gina doesn't say anything. She practically ran out of here."

Dani looked around to make sure no one else could overhear him.

"Dani's your girlfriend. You don't want her to come to the hospital and you don't want to tell her you're okay. Do you know how angry she's going to be?" Roberto questioned his partner.

Dani stilled.

Jax had planted the bomb?

"I told you, I need to lure Carter in. If he thinks I'm in a weakened state, surely he'll come to taunt me."

"Or kill you," Roberto said.

"As long as Dani isn't involved, I'm okay with that."

"You're okay with that?" Dani asked, pushing the door to Jax's hospital room fully open. "You're okay with dying?"

"Dani!" Jax looked over at Roberto whose mouth had fallen open.

"How did you-"

"You lied to me...again," Dani's eyes were full of censure.

"Dani-"

"No, don't bother, Jax. Do you know what I went through to get here? Do you know how many people were hurt so that I can see you?"

"Dani-"

"Why do you keep disappointing me?" Dani wiped away the lone tear that made its way down her cheek.

"I just want you to be safe," Jax explained. "I know you wanted to help me with Carter but I can't risk you getting hurt."

"But it's okay for you to get hurt?"

"Dani, try to understand," Jax pleaded.

"He's right," Roberto interrupted. "Take it from me. My wife has been hurt because of all of this. The only thing that's keeping me going is the knowledge that we're going to catch the man responsible."

"So revenge is more important?" Dani gave a sad smile. "You're here plotting away with Jax while your wife is suffering alone in a hospital room."

"She's not alone. Her brother Tristan is with her," Roberto said. "Besides, this isn't revenge. It's justice."

"Dani," Jax tried to get out of his hospital bed but groaned from the pain of it, "Try to understand that I just don't want you to get hurt."

"I do understand, Jax. I completely understand that you don't want me to get hurt. What I don't understand is how you can possibly think that I won't be hurt if you're killed. I also don't understand how you can promise to be honest with me one moment and then lie to me the next."

"Dani-"

"No, I'm done, Jax. I'd do anything for you but you...you just keep lying to me. Don't you trust me?"

"Of course I do," Jax slowly walked to Dani and pulled her in his arms, "Don't you know how important you are to me? I couldn't bear it if you suffered because of some feud my brother has with me."

"My life is so complicated. Why does our relationship have to be too?"

Jax couldn't answer right away. Instead he kissed her forehead and released her, "If I could change things I would. Honestly, I wish you were somewhere far away and safe from my brother. He's dangerous, Dani. Very dangerous."

"I get it. You don't want me here," Dani took a step back, her eyes stinging with emotion. "I'll go. It's a relief that you're okay, Jax. I won't bother you anymore. I'll still worry about you but I'm not going to rush out to see you or anything. I'll wait for your call one way or the other. It'll be hard, but I'll do it. I'll force myself to wait. "

"Dani-"

"It's funny," Dani whispered, glancing back at Jax. "All my life, I never imagined myself as the Cinderella-type. In fact, I despise that kind of woman. I always told myself that if I met a man that I cared about, I wouldn't let him face my problems for me. I wouldn't cower behind him. Instead, I'd walk side-by-side with him, facing whatever came at us together. If I could be in a relationship like that, how nice it would be. I really...wanted that." Her words died softly as she gave Jax a watery smile, "I'll see you around, Jax."

Jax watched Dani leave the hospital room, his body feeling hot with anxiety.

"You're not going to run after her?" Roberto asked.

"I want to."

"Then why aren't you?"

"Because as nice as Dani's dream is, it's just a dream and dreams aren't real."

"No, but they can be," Roberto whispered. "They can be."

-----------------
Dani walked to her apartment with leaden feet. She was too tired to cry. Jax lied to her. Oliver was angry with her. Donovan had been abducted and there was nothing she could do to help him.

"Dani?" Calvin was waiting for her, his body leaning against her door.

"What do you want?" Dani rolled her eyes. "I don't really feel like dealing with you right now."

"Dealing with me? Or the fact that we're family?" Calvin asked.

"Both."

"Dani, we need to talk," Calvin insisted.

"No, we don't. I have nothing to say to you."

"Don't you see, Dani? I can help you. Let me help you."

"Help me what?"

"Find the man that's after you," Calvin answered. "You have no idea how talented I am, Dani. I can help you control your dreams."

Dani paused, "Control my dreams? Like not have them anymore?"

"More like decide whose dreams you're going to see."

"What are you talking about? I can't do that. It's totally random."

Calvin shook his head, "No, it's not. You may think that touching someone is the only way to see their nightmares but it isn't. There are other ways. It's how I found out more about you. Let me help you, Dani."

"How do you know about the man that's after me?"

"I saw him in your dreams. You don't even remember them, but I do. I dream about you all the time lately. "

"Stop."

"Dani, I had a dream last night and you were in it. We argued about whether or not you should leave this place. You were brave and stubborn...but you were dying."

Dani shook her head, "No, you're lying. You just want me to leave with you."

"I do," Calvin confessed. "I want you to leave with me. Not forever, but for a little bit. Just until it's safe. In the meantime, I'll help you understand how to access anyone's dreams. Even your boyfriend's brother."

"How did you-"

"I told you. I'm very talented," Calvin grinned. "So what do you say? Will you let me take you away from here?"

Dani stared into Calvin's blue eyes and was reminded of Jax. He wanted her far away. He didn't want her help. She couldn't ignore that they were all in danger no matter what Jax said. She found herself nodding before answering Calvin.

"Yes. Yes, I'll run away with you."
