Chapter 12
Gina Goldfisck hated working early in the morning. Unfortunately, she had to finish a report on a gang-related vandalism case that she had pushed back. She found herself meandering towards the gangs division to ask one of the other officers to help her identify some gang symbols. Everyone was busy on the phone or on their computers. She was about to flag down one of the detectives when she overheard an interesting bit of information.
She had been standing close to two detectives that were discussing a case as they poured themselves some coffee.
"So they think Los Lobos Locos had something to do with it?" one of the detectives asked. He had red hair and was fairly new to the gang division.
Another detective wearing a purple tie nodded, "Yup. Let me tell you something, Bart. Marriages don't always last when you work in homicide. Montoya just can't accept the truth. His wife left him for another man. It happens. Especially when you're practically married to the job like most homicide detectives are."
Bart nodded, "Poor guy. I heard he asked us to help him find out if they had his wife hostage. Neil, we should be able to help him."
Neil, the other detective, shrugged, "To be honest, we haven't gotten a report that they've kidnapped a woman. Even if we did, we still wouldn't help."
"Why not?"
"It would jeopardize the safety of our man undercover."
"There seems to be more trouble with Los Lobos Locos these days," Bart frowned.
"Yup. There's that stunt at the restaurant the other day. Then Montoya comes in and now we got a report that those crazy wolves are starting to target people unrelated to their drug ring. Supposedly it has to do with their new leader."
"We should have enough to go in and bust him for murder," Bart muttered.
"No. It's too early and we'll never know who else is involved in the drug ring if we go in too soon. It's why we can't help Montoya. Our man has been undercover too long to blow his cover."
"So why do you think he's going after this woman named Dolores Greene?" Bart asked.
Neil took a sip of his coffee and stared at the black brew for a moment, "Who knows? I heard she's a waitress. Maybe she served him a bad cup of joe."
Gina Goldfisck slowly turned around and headed towards homicide. She noticed that both Roberto and Jax were missing. She was about to leave when Roberto Montoya came stomping in like the Tasmanian Devil, snarling and cursing at everyone. A younger man trailed behind him like a dark cloud.
Gina and Roberto's eyes met.
"What the hell do you want?" Roberto spat.
For once, Gina didn't know what to say. Normally, she would give him some feisty reply but not today. Not when she knew that his wife was missing. He must be devastated.
Gina shook her head and walked past him when the younger man grabbed her shoulder and said, "Don't mind him. He's just upset today."
Gina nodded, "It's okay. I know. I just came from the gang division and overheard them talking about his wife."
The younger man grimaced, "She's also my sister. They didn't want to help us. I've spent my whole adult life fighting the bad guys and this is how I get repaid. Same thing with Montoya."
"I'm really sorry. If it makes any difference, they didn't know anything about her."
"They're too busy caring about drug deals than lives. Even the detectives I work with are the same. They won't help because of an ongoing investigation or some crap like that."
"You're also a detective?" Gina asked.
The young man nodded, "I work homicide in a neighboring city. Detective Tristan Beaumont."
Gina was about to leave when she whispered, "You're wrong you know."
"About what?"
"About them not caring about human lives. They're trying to help a woman the gang has targeted. I probably shouldn't be sharing this but I heard them."
"Los Lobos Locos is targeting a woman?"
Gina looked around to make sure no one was too close to hear, "I think they said she was a waitress or something. Dolores. Dolores Greene was her name."
"Dolores?" Roberto interrupted them. "They're going after a waitress named Dolores?"
Gina nodded, shocked that Roberto had been listening.
"What's the matter?" Tristan asked his brother-in-law.
"I've got to go. I need to call Jax."
"What's going on?" Tristan asked, following him and forgetting Gina.
"I know her. Dolores Greene. I know her. Dammit, what if they're targeting everyone around me? We have to save her."

"Jax, what if these dreams mean something bad is going to happen?" Dani asked as Jax watched her filling in the color of the reaper she was sketching. "What if this is like some kind of omen or something?"
A sick feeling curdled in Jax's belly, "Stop saying things like that. It's just a dream."
"Don't you mean dreams. As in plural. As in more than one. As in it's not really just a dream so don't call it that," Dani pushed her chair back and stood up.
"Whoa," Jax held up his hands, "I'm not trying to start an argument with you Dani."
"I know that...and I'm sorry. I know you have enough to deal with because of Gladys being missing but this is stressing me out. Something's wrong. I can feel it. I have scary dreams. Weird dreams. Sometimes I even have perverted dreams-"
"Perverted dreams?"
"Focus, Jax! Despite all the dreams that I've had...I've always known that they belonged to someone else. That as scary or creepy as they may be, they're not my fears. They're not a part of my reality...but now, now there's something in all of these dreams and I can't help but think it's some kind of message."
"Okay, let's think about this logically," Jax suggested as he stood up to walk beside her. "You're seeing dreams from different people that you've touched. Correct?"
"Correct," Dani confirmed.
"In each of these dreams is a grim reaper or death. If we're assuming that the dreams really do belong to different people, then that would mean that somehow this grim reaper is purposely invading your dreams. Right?"
"Perhaps," Dani bit her bottom lip. "But who would be able to do something like that?"
"Says the woman that can see people's nightmares. Logically speaking, if you have the ability to be some kind of human dream catcher, it's not too far-fetched to think that there's someone out there that can enter your dreams. That's creepy."
"But why? Why would anyone want to do that?"
"Maybe someone wants to see your dreams too. I don't know. This is uncharted territory for me," Jax admitted.
"For me too."
Jax wrapped Dani in his arms and gave her a light squeeze, "Even so, just know that if you need me, I'll be here."
They both heard Jax's cell phone ringing and groaned.
"Hold on," he muttered as he answered. "What's going on Roberto? What? Are you sure? Dammit. Okay, I'll meet you at King's Diner. Yeah, she's with me. I'll tell her. Calm down Roberto. I'm sure they have everything under control."
"What's wrong?"
"Dani, I want you-no I need you to stay calm."
"You're scaring me. What's going on?"
"Dolores is in trouble."
--------
There was something fishy about Chencho and it wasn't just his name.
CJ was watching through a window of the abandoned house across the street from Dolores' home. The sun still hadn't risen but he didn't care. He was patient when it came to getting answers. CJ had been spying on Chencho all day. If the latter had noticed him, he didn't show it. Chencho didn't like him and that amused CJ.
He grinned when he saw Chencho exiting Dolores' home, a large zippered bag in his arms. Clearly, he had come prepared.
Perhaps a little too prepared.
CJ snorted as he thought of Chencho trying to pull a fast one on him. No one could trick him. No one. He had ordered Chencho to take a life and no matter what someone was going to die.
