2| Meeting Her
"And I watch from a distance seventeen. And I'm short of the others dreams of being golden and on top."
---
After dinner, as well as the reset, Miss Peregrine led the children upstairs. She walked silently down the hall of doors, head held high yet her shoulders seemed to shudder with weight.
Although he was glad about being right, Enoch sensed he had crossed a line that he blatantly ignored.
They stopped at a rather large section of blank wall. It was nowhere near conspicuous. Miss Peregrine waved her hands and the wall disappeared to reveal a 7 foot heavy titanium door with 5 slide locks and a simple large brass padlock. She moved to open one of the slide locks, but first turned to face the peculiars.
"Behind this door, all reality became not fantasy, but surrealistic. What you see is not real, do not succumb to whatever you are told or shown. Heed my words children."She warned.
Enoch cocked a brow. He wondered deeply about why she had to give a forewarning. This peculiar can't possibly be that bad.
When Miss Peregrine finished unlocking the door, she had Bronwym aid in pulling it open. And even the little girl had some problems.
The door revealed a bright white padded room. In the very center, there was someone hunched over facing the window. They wore about 4 straitjackets. Their hair reached their waist, pitch black.
"This, children, is..Prism. She doesn't necessarily have a real name. I simply associate her this way because of what she can do."
Enoch narrowed his eyes and inched closer. That was a girl? Frankly it was hard to tell. The tan complexion was shaded to show masculinity, not femininity.
Prism moved crookedly. Like a music box with rusted gears.
"Alma.."She said, her voice quiet.
"My fault, Miss Peregrine.."She rushed to correct herself."It's become rather hot in my room, considering I get no form of air conditioning. Would you mind removing a layer?"Her voice was sweet and kind, but Enoch sensed a hint of snake-like venom in her words, as if she were mocking her.
Miss Peregrine smiled."No matter how many times you ask, I'm not going to. You are a threat to the world and to my children."
Prism sat up a little with a frown. She turned her head. She had striking pastel blue eyes, however when she moved even a little, her eyes would change colors."I'm not going to hurt them. I promise. I don't hurt peculiars like myself. That's be the equivalent of cannibalism and I'm no Hollowghast."
"Tell that to Miss Avocet. You're in our loop now for a reason. It's my job to protect my children. And in keeping you confined, I'm doing so."
Prism stared at Enoch intently. She sat up on her knees, trying to inch closer. Enoch moved his foot to also step closer, but Miss Peregrine put her arm in front of him. Prism frowned and slumped back down in her jackets.
"I can't believe you don't trust me that much."The corner of her lip twitched. "It's not like I'm the one who killed Victor."
There was a knock on the opened door. Enoch glanced up and his eyes widened. There stood, lo and behold, Victor. His eyes were intact, they looked as if they were never missing. His clothes had no wrinkle, his face was fair and joyful.
"Did I miss anything?"Victor questioned, seeing as how everyone stared at him weird. Bronwym's eyes filled with tears. She started to stutter and stepped close.
"V-Victor?"
Horace stared at Prism like she was a concept he couldn't wrap his mind around. She flashed him a grin. And her teeth were white daggers. "Anything you see isn't real. Bronwym, that's not Victor."Horace recited, stepping forward.
Bronwym hissed at Horace, rushing forward towards Victor. He greeted her with open arms. But as soon as she hugged him, she dissolved into Victor's form. Across his face ripped a violent smile and he disappeared into the floor. Hugh growled.
"What'd you do to Bronwym! You better tell us right now or..or.."He started stuttering. Prism tilted her head and slid out of the straitjackets.
She smiled down at Hugh."I don't see any of your black and yellow insect friends anywhere. Do you?"She inquired. Miss Peregrine didn't move. She looked at Enoch and he knew what her eyes said. Nothing's real.
Hugh opened his mouth and shut it. He did this four times before he realized that the bees weren't going to come out any time soon. He smiled happily.
"What's so dangerous about me, Miss Peregrine? I make everyone happy with my peculiarity."
Millard gave a huff and fixed his floating cap."Not me."He shot, trying to protect his beloved headmistress. Enoch wanted to pitch in, but he had a feeling that he didn't want his mind tampered with just yet.
Prism smirked and lowered her head. She walked gracefully, like she hadn't been sitting down for all her life, bound by clothing. She blinked, and as she did, another pair of eyes made themselves visible.
"Really Millard? I can actually see you."She said.
"Preposterous."Enoch blurted. All eyes were on him, and he knew that he was now expected to defend his claim."Millard is invisible. None of us can see him. And if you could see Millard, you wouldn't even have acknowledged the possibility."
Enoch fiddled with his fingers, immensely regretting ever asking about the mysterious window.
"Dearest Enoch, this room may be padded but I can still hear downstairs. I room right above the dining room. I can hear your conversations. And if Millard wasn't invisible, there would be no need to ask whether he is naked or not."Prism explained. Although she said this all with confidence, Enoch could see the sly fox look in her eyes.
"Wait-"
Suddenly the center of the room burst into white spectrals. They shot out like jagged rock edges. Fiona backed up towards the wall. She let out a heart wretching scream as vines with thorns sprouted from the padded cracks and wrapped around her. Blood seeped from all over the girl as the thorns penetrated her pale skin. The wall then devoured her.
A net threw itself onto Hugh from the roof, wrapping around him. Hugh thrashed and cried and fell to the floor. The net cut into his body tightened till it nearly diced him.
Enoch stood petrified as the people he grew up with were tortured in unimaginable ways. Did this peculiar have the ability to conjure up whatever she wanted?
Miss Peregrine simply stood there and watched. Enoch ran to her side and stared at her."Aren't you going to do anything? Your children are dying! Do something!"He yelled, throwing his arms up. Tears rushed down his face and he never noticed.
Olive was being burned by her own fire. Emma was against the roof, still wearing her lead boots like they didn't work. The twins were being chased by stone statues of dogs. Horace had his nightmares reflected in his eyes, each more gruesome than the last. He saw how all of his friends died. Millard was nowhere to be found.
Miss Peregrine sighed as she walked towards the door. Enoch glared, their headmistress was abandoning them in their time of need and death.
Prism cackled insanely. Rocking back and forth where she returned to sit on the floor.
Miss Peregrine flicked the light switch and it went dark. She flipped another switch and an odd cyan blue light filled the room. Everyone was against the wall, away from Prism. They were fine. They weren't bleeding. They weren't dead.
Enoch looked around, extremely confused. Prism stared at the floor, her shoulders slumped as she adjusted herself in the jackets. Enoch had an itching sensation to take one off, but he didn't move.
"You may be wondering what just happened."Miss Peregrine circled Prism like a shark, glaring down at her.
"Prism's peculiarity is that she can control waves. Light waves, sound waves, electromagnetic waves. Everything. She could be using this for good, but she doesn't. It may delight you to know that Prism has gone through every loop existing. And she's messed with the minds of every peculiar child in each. We were her last hope."
"Last hope?"Enoch echoed.
Prism nodded."It was either solitary confinement here..or a Hollowghast."Her voice was hollow, an old worn down house, wind blowing through.
Enoch's eyebrows furrowed. Would they really do that to her?
He looked at the others. Nobody held a look of remorse. Only hate."I felt everything."Fiona seethed.
"I felt absolutely nothing. I couldn't even breathe!"Bronwym screamed.
Prism hung her head.
"Leave me be."She requested lowly. Nobody hesitated to leave. Enoch put a hand on Prism's shoulder and left with the others.
---
"I'm sorry for asking, Miss P."Enoch said quietly.
Miss Peregrine nodded acknowledgingly. He found this a good opportunity to persist forward, though from obvious experience he began to think that maybe it wasn't such a good idea.
"Wh...What if I could help to rehabilitate Prism?"Enoch voiced. Miss Peregrine stopped walking. But she didn't say no. She simply looked back, wanting a longer explanation.
"I am kind of scared of her peculiarity. But I think what she needs is a real friend she can rely on. One that isn't afraid of her. And can stand her bipolar mood swings. I can teach her to use her powers for good if you give me a chance. I can uphold my own."He tried his best to look convincing, putting his hands behind his back and standing straight.
There was a short pause before she answered.
"Okay Enoch. I give you permission. If she is not rehabilitated in 25 days, you are to cut off all communications with her and forget she exists."
