十九: Rain Storms

Thunder clapped loudly as rain poured down continuously onto the empty streets of Hong Kong. There were little to few people walking on the streets: they all either held umbrellas in their hands or were standing inside the buildings, waiting for the amount of rain to decrease.

But unfortunately for one girl, who didn't have an umbrella, she was forced to walk under the pouring rain. She shivered and wrapped her arms around herself, trying to keep herself warm, but it was almost impossible. The hood of her hoodie was put up, but it didn't seem to help at all. Her hoodie was soaked with rain, her school clothes plastered around her body.

Her usual, neat, black hair was in a wet, tangled mess: some strands were trapped under the straps of her heavy backpack, some strands were sticking to her neck, and the rest were being blown away by the wind. Her shoes and socks were uncomfortably wet, soaking up the water in the puddles she had accidentally trodden in.

She sneezed, shivering again as she tried to shield the rain away from her head. Thunder boomed and lightning flashed again, startling her and making her jump slightly. When she was little, she loved splashing in the large puddles when it rained heavily, but now? Not so much.

It was currently 6 O'Clock, and even though sunset was supposed to happen around now, the storm clouds had blocked the sky, casting their dark shadows over everything. Samantha had just come back from Chapel rehearsal, which was supposed to end at 5, but the group had accidentally went overtime.

Her phone had died in the middle of their rehearsal, so she could no call her parents, China, Hong Kong, or anybody else for that matter. She frowned, disliking her current state. Cold droplets of water trailed down her already soaked face and gathered at her chin, but wiped them off and kept on walking.

She checked her wallet to see if she had any cash to ride her bus, but to her luck, she was broke.

"I really shouldn't have spend those last few coins on candy..." she mumbled to herself, pursing her lips as she put her wallet away.

But it was almost as if God had answered her prayer when she heard a familiar shout.

"Sammi!"

The girl whipped around at the sound of her nickname. There seemed to be a figure walking towards her in the distance, holding a large umbrella that could fit two people. She squinted at the figure, then soon realized that it was her good friend China.

"Yào?" she yelled back. She turned around and began to run to him, but she almost slipped on the wet ground. She regained her balance after a while, then walked over to him as fast as she could instead.

When Samantha reached him, she threw her arms around him, relieved to finally have some shelter, even though it was just under an umbrella. China chuckled and put his free arm around her. When she pulled away, asked, "Do you have any money? How did you find me? What are you doing here anyway? I thought you were supposed to be back home."

He laughed at her panicked expression. "You weren't home, so we decided to come find you."

"We?"

China patted her back. "You'll see soon enough, aru. Let's go home."

He then turned around and held her close as they walked together in the other direction. As they walked and walked, it suddenly hit Samantha about why they were walking the wrong way, but she decided not to question it.

As they walked on, China waved at something in the far distance.

"Hey! Start the car, aru!" he yelled.

"What car?" Samantha asked.

"We came here by car, aru."

"Since when did you have a car?" she demanded. "You really have to stop hiding things from me. Did you drive?"

"No, Hong Kong is," he replied, gesturing to the white vehicle waiting for them ahead. The familiar choppy-haired boy was sitting in the driver's seat. He jabbed his thumb to the towel covered seats behind him.

"You should like, get in. It's warmer inside," he told them as China opened the door for Samantha to get in, holding the umbrella above the entrance of the car.

Samantha scrambled in quickly, sliding her backpack off her back and placing it beside her. Yào reached into the plastic bag hanging on his wrist and pulled out a towel. He placed it over her shoulders. He then slid the door shut and went to the other side of the car, closing his umbrella and getting in the front seat with Loung.

The girl stayed silent as Hong Kong drove them back home. The comfortable, warm, heat made her want to roll around in the towels, but she decided not to. After a while, she decided to speak up.

"Thanks guys, I owe you one."

Small smiles appeared on both of their faces. Hong Kong waved it off like it was nothing, but China reached back and patted her head in response.
