九: Fun Times With Russia
Samantha walked towards China's house, hugging her laptop to her chest. Her heavy backpack made her look like a turtle, but she didn't really mind.
As she got closer to the house, she stepped on the stepping stones which were on the concrete path that lead to the front door.
The girl fished out the spare key that China had left in a crack on the ground. She dusted it off and inserted it into the hole of the lock, then turned it, pushing open the door.
"Hey, Loung, I'm hom--"
Samantha cut off her sentence and let out a tiny squeak as her eyes fell on someone who was sitting on the couch. It was a man, and he wore a long, thick, light beige coat. A white scarf was draped around his neck. His hair was almost white, but you could see a tint of blonde in it. The man turned around, revealing his purple eyes. He smiled warmly and waved.
"Welcome home, Samantha!" he greeted her.
The girl gulped, her heartbeat seeming to grow faster and faster. She could almost hear it thumping in her ears. Her breath hitched in her throat, making it harder for her to speak. She remained frozen in shock and grabbed the object nearest to her, which was a mop.
"W-Who are you?" she croaked out. "And how do you know my name?"
"What? Friend China hasn't told you about me?" The strange man questioned, seemingly surprised.
"How do you know China?" she demanded. "Who are you?"
"I am Russia, or you could call me Ivan." He shrugged. "You can choose whatever you want to call me."
Samantha tensed up at the name. Russia...the biggest country in the world...
"No need to be so scared." Russia reached into his coat, pulling out a big yellow flower. "Sunflower?" he offered, holding it out to her.
The girl went over to him and took the flower warily. "Um, thank you," she said.
"I am very good friend of China," he explained, "He is my only friend, apart from human friend Hope. Other countries treat me like outcast. Maybe you could be good friend of mine, too, da?"
Samantha paused, then nodded. "Sure...maybe we could be friends, Russia."
She put her bag and her laptop down beside the couch, still holding the sunflower.
"Would you like to watch the television, Samantha?" he asked.
"I...uh...no--eh...sure...?" Samantha stammered, seemingly forced to accept his offer.
"Okay, sit down here," Ivan said and smiled, patting the space beside him. The girl sat down on the couch obediently, looking at her feet. She watched as he pointed the TV remote at the screen, flipping through the channels until he settled on one that he liked.
Russia set down the remote control beside him. He turned to her and smiled. "We're going to watch horror movie! Is okay, da?"
Samantha tensed up at the words "horror movie". She was afraid of horror movies: they never let her sleep at night. Horror was her least favorite genre. She never liked scary movies.
"Mr. R-Russia? You wouldn't m-mind switching the--" she started to say, but was cut off by the country's intimidating purple gaze. She gulped, staying quiet as the horror movie started up.
~~~Time skip to after the horror movie brought to you by the magical pipe of pain~~~
Samantha lay curled up on the couch, shaking and whimpering as she covered her face with her hands, not daring to look at the screen. Russia seemed unfazed, staring at the scenes of gore calmly.
Suddenly, the front door opened.
"Samantha, we're home, aru~!" sang China as he stepped into the house with Hong Kong. "Aiya! Russia, what are you doing here aru?!" he demanded when he noticed the tall man. "What did you do to my little hoodie-loving panda bear?!"
"Oh, hello, China. Samantha is all right. She is right here!" he exclaimed, patting the quivering girl. She flinched at the action.
Hearing his name, the girl launched herself off the couch, almost knocking China over. She embraced him tightly, still shaking out of fear. Her eyes were glazed with tears as if she was on the verge of crying, but they never fell.
"Ivan. What did you do to Samantha," Yào demanded, his eyes hardening at the bigger country.
"We just watched a horror movie!" Russia replied brightly, as if nothing was wrong.
"Horror movie?!" China shrieked, his eyes wide. "Are you insane aru?!" he screamed. He took a deep breath, calming himself down. "Since you don't know this, I must explain this to you. If there is one thing you mustn't do, you never make Samantha watch scary horror movie."
"Oh. I'm sorry," the country apologized. "But we can still be friends, da?" he asked cheerily. China jumped to his feet.
"No, no wa--"
"Sure!" the mentioned girl interrupted. "I like having new friends."
Russia giggled, obviously pleased with her answer. "I must go now. See you next time, little one." He patted her head, smiling happily, then exited the house. China and Hong Kong watched him warily through the window.
Once he was out of sight, China whirled around and glared at her.
"How could you be friends with him, aru?" he demanded. "Have you lost your mind?! He--he made you watch...a horror movie!"
The girl sighed. "Everyone needs a little forgiving once in awhile. And plus, he did say that you were his only friend apart from his other friend Hope. He was treated like an outcast by the other countries. I may not know him well, but I don't think anyone should deserve to be treated like that," she said firmly, holding a finger to his chest.
"I suppose that's true," Hong Kong muttered.
"But you said it yourself! You. Don't Know. Him. Aru." China said. "But I do."
"If I actually made a mistake in befriending him, then it's my loss," Samantha retorted.
"I'm telling you this because I care about you!" Yào exclaimed, trembling slightly. "I don't want you to get hurt, aru."
The girl placed a hand on his shoulder, pursing her lips. "I'm a big girl now. I can handle it."
"Sometimes, I really don't get you, aru."
Loung nodded. "I agree. You can be a very confusing person."
